The Netherlands: Beyond Amsterdam
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | By train, bike, and boat, we visit the top Dutch sights outside of Amsterdam: from Haarlem to Rotterdam, and from Delft to the Zuiderzee. Along the way, we enjoy charming towns with fragrant cheese markets, soggy polderland, mighty dikes, and windmills both new and old. Rolling through the Netherlands and connecting with its people, you can’t help but think, “Everything’s so...Dutch!”

Amsterdam City Centre - ???????? Netherlands - 4K Virtual Tour
Walking on a beautiful autumn day in Amsterdam City sightseeing iconic buildings and the traditional canal system. Click here ▶ to see highlights and guide.
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands but not the seat of government, which is The Hague. The royal family, for example, is only occasionally in residence at the Royal Palace (see highlight timestap), on the square known as the Dam, in Amsterdam. Amsterdam’s intimate character is best reflected in the narrow, bustling streets of the old town, where much of the population still goes about its business. While there are reminders of the glorious past—gabled houses, noble brick facades clad with sandstone, richly decorated cornices, towers and churches. The inner city is divided by its network of canals into some 90 islands as seen in this walking tour!

EXPLORING historic AMSTERDAM (The Netherlands, Holland)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go for a walking tour of Amsterdam, this fascinating European (and very unique) capital in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is the capital and most populous municipality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Its status as the capital is mandated by the Constitution of the Netherlands, although it is not the seat of the government, which is The Hague.
Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk. Cycling is key to the city’s character, and there are numerous bike paths.

Amsterdam
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Amsterdam — Europe's best-preserved 17th-century city — is simultaneously quaint and jarring, traditional and modern. Filled with history and still happy-go-lucky, it's a delight to explore. Uniquely entertaining Amsterdam shows off its Rembrandts and Van Goghs, more bikes than cars, flirting prostitutes, and pot-filled coffeeshops — all under tall, skinny facades leaning out over placid canals.

One Day in Amsterdam! The best things to do in the capital of the Netherlands!
Amsterdam is one of our favourite European destinations for a great city trip. The Dutch capital has lots to offer from great food to awesome museums and some really great bars. We travelled all over the city to spend a perfect day in Amsterdam and capture our favourite experiences in the city. We start the day with a superfood breakfast at The Avocado Show. The restaurant specialises in instagrammable dishes featuring sustainable avocados. With a full stomach, it's time to shop. We hit up the picturesque Negen Straatjes. The nine small streets feature some of Amsterdam's best boutique shops. We visit contemporary clothing store Closed and second-hand shop Bij Ons. We jump on a bicycle and make our way to Albert Cuyp. We explore the world-famous market and taste some traditional Dutch snacks like poffertjes, stroopwafel and the famous Dutch Haring (Herring). To refuel after all the walking we visit Bar Bitterbal for a Dutch lager and some innovative new versions of Amsterdam's favourite beer snack, the bitterbal! Next up, we make our way to the famous canals where we rent a boat and navigate the maze of waterways in the city centre, it's our favourite way to see the city! As the sun sets, we keep up with the nautical theme as we wind down and have dinner at Surinamese restaurant and bar, Waterkant. The restaurant is named after the nightlife district in the former Dutch colony Suriname and serves traditional dishes like Roti and Bakabana which wash down perfectly with the Surinamese Parbo Beer.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands: visit to Dam Square & Royal Palace
Dam Square is very large and vibrant, with throngs of people all over. The National Monument is located here, as is the Nieuwe Kerk, but the one we wanted to see the most was the Royal Palace. We were fortunate to be there on a day when it was open to the public and we really enjoyed our visit. **At the beginning, Ed inadvertently referred to the church as the old church, when it is in fact the new church...aka Nieuwe Kerk**

1900 - Dam Square in Amsterdam (speed corrected w/ added sound) + 2017 comparison
Old film of Dam Square in the Netherlands in 1900. Set to a natural rate and added in sound for ambiance. I included clips of the same area in present day. The building to the right with the pillars (Zocher stock exchange building) was demolished in 1903 and the fancy stone column at the left (named The Unity) was demolished in 1914. Thanks to EYE
Late Night Food Guide to Amsterdam
Abel hits the streets of Amsterdam for the best late night food in this Dutch city. He starts the night off at an Amsterdam institution, Cafe Schiller in Rembrandt Square, for the fried balls of dough and meat known as bitterballen, or “brown gold,” before biking over to Roopram Roti, a Surinamese restaurant that serves the city’s best roti.
After a few more drinks, Abel heads to FEBO, a vending-machine restaurant that serves burgers and sandwiches, and talks to a few Amsterdam locals. He ends the night at Metsut 2 for kapsalon, a dish invited in the Netherlands that's made up of French fries topped with shawarma.

Amsterdam is breathtaking from the canals that's why my cousin and I rented a canal boat so we could have our own private tour. We rented the canal boat from canalmotorboats.com conveniently located west of Amsterdam Central Station and rents for 40 euros per hour but make sure to reserve a few days ahead.
Amsterdam has 2 major nightlife districts called Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein these squares are loaded with bars and night clubs. Depending on where you start, I recommend you get a delicious negroni from NJOY cocktail bar but beware, they have a strict door policy so do not show up too trashed or under dressed.
At Rembrantplein you'll find many great spots like Escape night club, Jantjesverjaardag (a popular student bar), techno club Air Amsterdam, and my favorite Club NYX for their bizarre toilet bar on the top floor where you literally can take a piss behind the DJ in a urinal on the dance floor.
If you're not into night clubs than Amsterdam has a magnitude of bars and cafes, it is what Amsterdam is best known for. Dig deep into local Dutch cafe culture in the Jordaan district at cozy places Cafe Thijsen, Gevulde Gaper, Staalmeesters and De Zotte.
For party bars and dive bars check out No. 129, Cafe Kooper, Kopstootbar and end your night either at the Water Hole for rock music and live bands or club hard at the massive Paradiso dance floor or consider Chicago Social club for a more laid back hipster kind of vibe.
In conclusion, the Amsterdam nightlife is one of world's best. The fact that bars and clubs are open late, no last call, great selection of music & venues plus a chill laid back local crowd that makes Amsterdam the absolute party capital of Europe, without a doubt. Ibiza eat your heart out! Also, make sure to watch my Amsterdam travel guide for day time activities.
