Cut from Japanese movie Ten to Chi to (Heaven and Earth) 1990.
The battles of Kawanakajima (川中島の戦い Kawanakajima no tatakai) were fought in the Sengoku period of Japan between Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province in the plain of Kawanakajima, the island between the rivers, in the north of Shinano Province. The location is in the southern part of the present-day city of Nagano. Five major battles took place there: Fuse in 1553, Saigawa in 1555, Uenohara in 1557, Hachimanbara in 1561, and Shiozaki in 1564. The best known and most severe among them was fought on October 18, 1561, and was only fought in the heart of the Kawanakajima plain, thus being the battle of Kawanakajima. The battles were fought after Shingen conquered Shinano, expelling Ogasawara Nagatoki and Murakami Yoshikiyo, who subsequently turned to Kenshin for help. The battles became one of the most cherished tales in Japanese military history, the epitome of Japanese chivalry and romance, mentioned in epic literature, woodblock printing and movies.

Yudanaka Station To Biyu Quick Guide 2009_1218
Climb onboard up to Issa-no-komichi BIYU-NO-YADO,
nothing special up here, just tradition Japanese Onsen on the edge of Shigakogen National Park (proper name is Shin-Jo-Etsu-National Park, but not many people actually use the name except central government employees^-^).
If you you'd like to be hit in the face with regular Japan Rural thinking, ready to explore a kind of frontier /pioneer then this might be something to stumble on. You won't find a lot of travel agent advertising anything except snowmonkeys, simply because the area is not ready for foreigners - that's what makes it interesting^-^.....hard/heavy going but very rewarding at times. They do desperately need more characters around here (although there are many in the woodwork already),
if you can come without destroying what's here, people/culture/wildlife/greenery it may be another chapter in your life (possibly not completely smooth, but like good bread with a bit of fibre and lumps^-^) Enough waffle, if you're keen we are happy to get you 'in the door' of Shigakogen/Yudanaka/Nagano. If you not ready to be literally hit in the face with local Japanese thinking, I would suggest staying in industrialized Akihabara or Kyoto....you just won't meet Samurai thinking that's hidden in some kind of mindset....(actually I/we really don't understand all the mechanisms at play, but that's what makes it interesting) The real last samurai -we hope Tom Cruise and family will come again, the mix of big wheels of cultures is an amazing thing^-^
