Wilde About Texas: Blanco courthouse has eclectic history
1-26-2011
By: Russell Wilde
The Old Blanco County Courthouse manager Lesley Griffin says the 125-year-old building is more a community center than a courthouse.
The building was built in 1885, but it was only used as a courthouse for four years, she said.
After county lines were redrawn in 1889, the county seat moved north to Johnson City and a few years later a courthouse was built there. In Blanco, the old courthouse has served many purposes. It's been a school, a barbecue joint and even a hospital. As the old building approached its centennial, there was renewed interest in saving it after it was sold.
When the man bought it as it was going to move, we didn't want a big hole in our town. A group of people got together saying, 'We can't let this beautiful old building just be gone,' Griffin said.
Headed by the Old Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society, renovations and improvements have continued to ensure the iconic building remains the center of town.
Business owner Elizabeth Waller-Broyal says the courthouse square is the heart of the town.
It's our little downtown community. It's the place to be, she said.
Waller-Broyal's store, called On the Square, has been on the square for more than a decade. She says Blanco attracts everyone from cowboys to Harley riders.
Blanco's a great spot for you to ride to. We're right in the middle of the Hill Country, Waller-Broyal said.
The scenic spot has also attracted Hollywood. The old courthouse makes an appearance in Oscar-nominated True Grit.
We were all thrilled when they filmed 'True Grit.' It was exciting. Our town's never seen anything like that, Griffin said.
Now that Hollywood's lights are fading, the old building is returning to its role as a gathering place.
It's kind of like the meeting place in Blanco. Everyone knows where the courthouse is, Griffin said.

Blanco Chamber of Commerce
Life paces itself slower in small towns. In Blanco, for instance, old-timers gather regularly at the Blanco Bowling Club and Café to exchange opinions over a cup of coffee, and on the square, residents pause to chat at the post office after retrieving the morning's mail. The Blanco River, which meanders through the southern edge of this Hill Country town, provides not only the community's drinking water, but also its most popular tourist attraction. The river is the focal point of Blanco State Park, one of the state's smaller parks and most picturesque. It is one of only a few state parks with camping facilities located within a city, making supplies and small-town amenities readily available.

Richard Ware: Randall County Courthouse Restoration In Canyon, Texas
By 2004, the Randall County Courthouse in Canyon, Texas was in great need of serious repairs after 95 years of use. The Texas Historical Commission was making funds available to Texas counties needing help to restore their courthouses back to their original glory.
The Randall County Courthouse had already lost the original clock tower on top of the building which had been a major architectural feature when it was first built. But the THC was not offering enough money to do a full restoration. County Judge Ernie Houdashell was opposed to spending Randall County funds so it was up to community leaders to not only support the restoration project but help raise the money to complete it.

Wild West Texas Boys
We do dangerous things safely and have a ton of fun doing it. Please do not attempt these drills without professional training and a safety plan. Firearms can be dangerous when not handled properly. Guns used (in order) were Smith and Wesson 15-22, Ruger 22/45, Glock 20 (converted to 22 with American Arms slide and magazine), Benelli pump 12 gauge. All guns are verified empty. On command from the timer/safety dude the shooter loads and fires the 15-22 at 10 targets with 10 rounds and places the gun on the table after verifying an empty gun. The timer checks the gun. The shooter loads and fires the 22/45 at a 12 inch steel plate while walking towards it. When the gun is empty the shooter runs to a box, verifies empty and places inside the box. The shooter pulls a verified empty handgun from his waistband or pocket, loads and fires at 10 targets or until empty. The shooter verifies the gun is empty and places the handgun in the same box as the other empty handgun. One helper hands the shooter a verified empty shotgun, the shooter steps forward in front of the barricade, loads 2 12 gauge shells, takes the shotgun off safety and yells pull. Shooter fires at a clay thrown by the helper twice. On the sound of the last shot the timer stops the time. Scoring is Wild West Texas Boys style. Lowest score wins by taking the MISSES MINUS 2 if under 1:40, MINUS 1 if under 1:45. Anything between 1:50 and 1:55 is +1 and above 1:55 is +2 ... or something like that. We're just having fun and being safe. I'll tell you one thing this looks easy but is much harder than it looks. The instant feedback from the rounds hitting steel is awesome.

Randolph County Courthouse 1909
145 Worth Street, Asheboro, NC
At the July 1, 1907, meeting of the Randolph County Board of Commissioners there was lengthy discussion of the need for a larger, more conveniently located building for county offices and the courts. On July 12, 1909, in time for the first term of court, the new courthouse was completed and has remained a significant building in the growth and development of the City of Asheboro and Randolph County. On December 4, 2008, upon recommendation of the Board of County Commissioners, and the County Historic Landmark Commission, the Asheboro City Council designated the 1909 Courthouse as Randolph County’s first official Local Historic Landmark.

Texas Courthouses trailer
Texas Courthouses Trailer: With clock towers, turrets, domes and stained glass, Texas county courthouses are some of the most spectacular displays of Victorian architecture found anywhere in the United States. With most of them being built between 1881 and 1900, many were the first permanent structures in some counties in the Lone Star state, and remain lasting symbols of the regional rivalries that helped shape Texas.
Visit these beautiful buildings and hear the stories behind them in Texas Courthouses: The Golden Age, a three-part documentary that previously aired on public television. See the Goliad County Courthouse and its hanging tree, the courthouse in Shelby County modeled after Irish castles and the Parker County Courthouse underneath which a secret tunnel was discovered during restoration. Visit some of the state's most monumental courthouses in Tarrant and Bell counties, as well as the distinct yellow courthouse in Harrison County. With more historic courthouses than any other state in the country, this is a unique and architecturally stunning tour of Texas!
