Protecting Loggerhead Sea Turtle Nests - St. Vincent NWR
Dedicated to Sea Turtle Volunteers Everywhere.
At Apalachicola's St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge, we have a small, but tenacious, cadre of turtle patrol volunteers, who protect the endangered loggerhead sea turtle nests from predation by raccoon, coyote, and the non-native, feral hogs. We also provide annual data for long term monitoring of gulf sub-species population trends.
With 57 nests, St. Vincent has had a banner year. Yet, it's always an exciting time on the refuge, and, as you'll see in this video slideshow, we love what we're doing! Photos were provided by the GeekGal, with help from Mike Vroegop, and Ray Ainsworth.
The awesome cover of Here Comes the Sun by Richie Havens provides the soundtrack. Mr. Havens, George Harrison may have written it, but you brought it to life!
Thanks to the following SVNWR turtle volunteers for inspiration:
Lynda Smith, Mike & Robin Vroegop, Nancy & Landy Luther, Bob Sutton, Denise Williams, John Inzetta, Geoff & Norma Hewell, Bradley Smith. Also, trainees: Audrey Schmidt, Viginia Dixson, Irene M., Laura Q., and Susan C.

THREATENED: Sea Turtle Nesting and a Conservation Program Legacy on St. Vincent NWR
St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge is facing Federal funding cuts that may require that their barrier island operations be curtailed and placed in custodial status. This would include closing the island for visitors, and very possibly discontinuance of a long-established, volunteer-run sea turtle nest patrol protection program. The program is a legacy of the late Thom Lewis, Refuge Biologist for many years, who trained many of the original volunteers. Thom was also instrumental in the establishment and training for many of the other volunteer programs on the island, such as tracking the resident red wolf pair, Audubon Christmas Bird Counts, and Breeding Bird Surveys. Citizen science programs, such as these, are critical to the survival of these threatened and endangered species; especially the loggerhead turtle nests, which run a very high risk for predation by feral hogs. To comment on the proposed funding reductions and custodial status, please contact David Viker, Southeast Regional Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at: david_viker@fws.gov
THANK YOU!

Good Morning from SVG: Day 2 (Bequia Island Tour)
The G98.7 FM Broadcast team took the Bequia Express ferry from St. Vincent to Bequia to tour one of the island's premier tourist destination, The Bequia Beach Hotel. We check out a few of the rooms and had a few custom drinks, which may or may not have had an impact on R. Chung and Pinado! We also visited The Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary , Mount Pleasant and Port Elizabeth.
*** Special thanks to the SVG Tourism Authority ***
