Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort | Silver State Sights Episode 35
The Las Vegas metro area is now home to over 2 million people, and attracts tourists from all over the world, but it all started with one place – known as the birthplace of Las Vegas.
The Old Mormon Fort is located at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington Avenue, a location that 19th century settlers handpicked.
“The Mormon missionaries came here in June of 1855,” said retired park Raymond Richardson. “They are the ones who put up the first structure.”
Richardson says the settlers chose the location because of the creek that ran through.
The grounds have been recreated for the current park, but one part of it, hasn’t changed.
In the center of the re-created grounds stand an adobe building, which as the historical marker out front indicates – is the oldest building in Nevada.
“When you go out onto the ground you are going to see parts of the original structure from 1855, you are also going to see parts of the reconstruction of the fort,” Richardson added.

Spirit of Nevada - Old Mormon Fort
Just north of downtown Las Vegas lies the Old Mormon Fort, the first permanent, non-native structure built by missionaries in the Las Vegas Valley in 1855. Two years later the mission was abandoned due to harsh weather conditions and challenges with the natives. Today, a portion of the original adobe stockade wall, underground foundations of ranch buildings and historical artifacts remain in stark contrast with vast and modern Las Vegas.

Fort Mormon Las Vegas
I was only aware of Fort Mormon from Fallout New Vegas. In the game you spend a lot of time there helping out The Followers of the Apocalypse. It was founded as a Mormon mission that converted a lot of local Native American tribes. The mission was shutdown but later a former resident returned and opened a ranch and dry goods store. He defaulted on a loan and was passed on to a couple who began to farm on the property. The husband was murdered and his wife continued to the business which became very successful.
The original structure is gone but remnants of it remain. They charged 1 dollar to enter when I was there.
