Places to see in ( Nottingham - UK ) Old Market Square
The Old Market Square is an open, pedestrianised city square in Nottingham, England. Old Market Square is the largest such surviving square in the United Kingdom, forming the heart of the city, and covering an area of approximately 22,000 m².
Located in the heart of Nottingham City Centre, Old Market Square is bounded by Beastmarket Hill to the West, Smithy Row to the North, and South Parade to the South. The Eastern end of the square is dominated by the Council House, which serves as Nottingham's city hall. The nature of the Old Market Square means it is often used for large local events, fairs, concerts and exhibitions.
The Old Market Square has long been at the centre of Nottingham life. In the early days before the City of Nottingham was formed, the area was the centre-point between the Norman town of Nottingham, situated around the Castle Rock, and the old Anglo-Saxon town which was based around the current Lace Market at St. Mary's Church, also called Snothryngham, Snottingaham or Snottingham.
Redesigned by Gustafson Porter in 2004 and completed in March 2007, the Old Market Square renovations cost taxpayers around 17 million pounds. Not a single building was erected or demolished; the majority of the money was spent on granite paving stones and is built with three shades of granite.

The feature consists of a reflective pool, cascades, rills, clear stream jets and a scrim throughout the individual terraces.
The vertical jets of water are created using a variety of clear stream nozzles.
The water feature is served from a below ground tank located beneath the feature.
A single control panel controls the whole system. The control panel includes a digital Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and HMI system to permit the sequenced operation of the multi jet feature. The PLC enables a variety of nozzle sequence combinations to suit any requirements and allows a sequence of events to be built up into the required overall programme.
The panel also provides all necessary motor control switchgear together with all other necessary system controls.
An automatic dosing system is used for the display requiring regular, accurate water testing for proper water quality management. Permanent records should be kept, usually with maintenance records, records of chemical consumption, strainer cleaning etc. Such records assist in reading trends and allow any corrective action to be taken in advance to maintain satisfactory conditions.
The filtration and chemical treatment for each display is located within the below ground plantroom.

By 1951, when this film was made as part of Nottingham's Festival of Britain celebrations, nearly 25 years had elapsed since the great civic upheaval that saw the city's centuries-old market and annual Goose Fair ousted from the square for a new and imposing Council House. Since then 'meeting by the left lion' (the most favoured of the Joseph Else-designed sculptures) has started many a Nottingham night-out or relationship.
Members of the Nottingham and District Film Society were behind the camera for this well-made look at life in Old Market Square.
There’s a tunnel under the Council House that runs up to The Park, built by an extremely arrogant Victorian Lord Mayor who wanted to avoid mixing with the plebs on his way home,
The stone used for the Council House was left over from the building work of St Paul’s cathedral in London.

Mediaeval Market in the Old Market Square, Nottingham, 1980.
Southglade Infant School's mediaeval market in the Old Market Square, Nottingham, in 1980. Nottingham City Council, in its wisdom, had us sharing the Square that day with noisy roadworks. The footage was shot by my late Dad, ever the keen amateur filmmaker, with an early video camera the size of a fridge. The video quality is decent considering that it's been degenerating steadily on VHS tape for over thirty years.
