Alte Nikolaikirche

Frankfurt Cathedral , Church , Romerberg : Germany-Austria Travel Vlog Ep16
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alte Nikolaikirche (Old St. Nicholas Church)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dom St.Bartholomaus (Cathedral of St.Bartholomew)
Cathedral Tower

Römerberg the Center of Frankfurt. Old town
The centre of Frankfurt is Römerberg. What do you see on Römerberg? A square with lot of old buldings and history. Visit Franktfurt
The historic development of the Römerberg from partly Gothic, partly baroque houses was largely destroyed in 1944 during the air raids on Frankfurt. Today's Platzbild is the result of externally faithful reconstructions and new buildings from the 1950s and 1980s.
On the west side of the square is the historic town hall and Frankfurt landmark, the Romans. The house first mentioned in 1322 to the Romans is the middle of the three houses with the characteristic gothic stepped gable; the southern one is called Alt-Limpurg (formerly Laderam owned by Hartrad with Francofurtia, the female embodiment of the city), the northern Löwenstein. Towards the north the two houses Frauenstein and Salzhaus close to Paulsplatz. The houses south of the Limpurger Gasse are new buildings from the 1950s instead of the destroyed in the war houses Lichtenstein, Strahlenberg, Drachenfels and Schönstein.
The south side of the square dominates the early Gothic Alte Nikolaikirche.
The row of houses on the east side of the square, the Samstagsberg, is a reconstruction of the historical models built between 1981 and 1984. The names of these buildings are from north to south: Großer und Kleiner Engel, Goldener Greif, Wilder Mann, Kleiner Dachsberg, Großer Laubenberg, Kleiner Laubenberg, Schwarzer Stern.
On May 10, 1933 took place on Römerberg the nationwide organized by the German student body book burning. This is recalled today by a May 10, 2001 unveiled bronze plaque by Willi Schmidt between old Nikolaikirche and justice fountain with the text At this point burned on 10 May 1933 National Socialist students the books of writers scientists journalists and philosophers. 2001 and the quote from Heinrich Heines Almansor That was a prelude only, where you burn books, you burn people in the end. Heinrich Heine 1820 . In stylized books are the names of 52 persecuted authors.
The Justice Fountain (also called Justitiabrunnen) is a fountain on the Römerberg in Frankfurt am Main and one of the city's landmarks. It goes back to a predecessor building of 1543 in the same place and was created in its present form in 1611. During the Holy Roman Empire he played during the coronation ceremonial a special, albeit short-term role as a wine well for the emperor and then for the people. The currently visible fountain is a largely detailed copy from 1887
Frankfurt Cathedral - Inside The Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew
Frankfurt Cathedral (Frankfurter Dom), or Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew (Kaiserdom Sankt Bartholomäus) is a Roman Catholic Gothic church located in the centre of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.
Frankfurt Cathedral is the largest religious building in the city and a former collegiate church. Despite its common English name, it has never been a true cathedral, but is called the Kaiserdom (an imperial great church or imperial cathedral) or simply the Dom due to its importance as former election and coronation church of the Holy Roman Empire. As one of the major buildings of the Empire's history, it was a symbol of national unity, especially in the 19th century.
THe Frankfurt Cathedral building is the 3rd church on the same site. Since the late 19th century, excavations have revealed buildings that can be traced back to the 7th century. The history is closely linked with the general history of Frankfurt and Frankfurt's old town because the cathedral had an associated role as the religious counterpart of the Royal Palace in Frankfurt.

FRANKFURT, EXPLORING the magnificent CATHEDRAL (DOM) ⛪, GERMANY
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the magnificent, and very historic, Cathedral in Frankfurt Germany (German: Frankfurter Dom), officially Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew (German: Kaiserdom Sankt Bartholomäus). It is a Roman Catholic Gothic church located in the centre of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The present-day church is the fifth structure known to have existed at this location since a Merovingian chapel was first built in this location in 680. During World War II, between October 1943 and March 1944, the old town of Frankfurt, the biggest old Gothic town in Central Europe, was devastated by six bombardments of the Allied Air Forces. The greatest losses occurred in an attack by the Royal Air Force on 22 March 1944, when more than a thousand buildings of the old town, most of them half-timbered houses, were destroyed. St. Bartholomew's suffered severe damage; the interior was burned out completely. The building was reconstructed in the 1950s. The height of the spire is 95 metres.

Frankfurt Roemerburg Nikolaikirche
Frankfurt am Main: Altstadt: A long pan round the old Roemerburg Platz, starting and ending with the Nikolaikirche. Frankfurt's centre somehow escaped bombing till May 1944. The Main Romerburg buildings actually retained something of their frontage, and were rebuilt, and all the elaborate timber framed buildings were destroyed, but were rebuilt in replica. Brooding benignly over this square is the Commerzbank Tower, Kaiserstrasse, the modern symbol of Frankfurt and the reason why I visited Frankfurt.

Descend to the Beyer crypt, visit the vaults and step back 800 years in history. The foundations of the double tower date back to 1230, making these the oldest rooms in Berlin. Partially destroyed in World War II, the reconstructed former house of God now houses a museum celebrating Berlin's history. Nikolaikirche / Stadtmuseum Berlin exhibits religious art, memorials and liturgical equipment, offering insights into the historic Nikolai quarter. Seven themed exhibits, including Treasure from the Tower and The Pantheon of Berlin, sketch the city's trajectory from origins to present. Learn more via the media stations and free audio guide App.
Nikolai Church has transformed repeatedly during its history. Today the distinctive double tower dominates the skyline. Constructed in red brick at the end of the 19th century, bombing raids in 1944 destroy the Nikolai Church and district almost completely. The spires, roof and parts of the vault are lost. In 1969, the building passes to the Berlin municipal authorities, and both church and municipal rooms are reconstructed in the 80s. The reconstruction of Berlin's 750-year old monument is completed in 1987. If you enter Nikolai Church today, you can once again marvel at the Gothic interior with its distinctive, colourful roof.
In the course of its history, the church has not only been a place of Christian worship but also serves the citizens of Berlin as a municipal centre. Throughout history, it has been the scene of important historical events. Paul Gerhardt, theologian and author of several famous hymns, is rectorate here in the 17th century. 1809 sees the first municipal decrees passed in the church. The first freely elected public representatives are sworn in here in 1991 to celebratory peals of the church bells. Speaking of music: Nikolai remains a place for music lovers, holding regular organ concerts.
From Nikolai Church it is about 10 minutes on foot to Cölln, Berlin's former sister city. You need only cross the Spree river to reach Petriplatz, the historic centre of Berlin dating to the Middle Ages. In 2006, archaeologists discover the foundations of five churches under Petriplatz. The most ancient is founded around 1200. Archaeologists discover 500 year old tombs and more than 3,700 skeletons next to the church. Between 2006 and 2009, architects uncover an old Latin school underneath the foundation walls of the Cöllner St. Peter's Church and the Cöllner Town Hall. The current sacred building is a meeting place for Christians, Jews and Muslims; a symbol of peaceful exchanges between religions.
Take the M48 bus and stop at the Nikolai quarter. Alternatively, take subway line U2 to Alexanderplatz. From here, it is a short walk down Town Hall Road to St. Nicholas Church. With the Berlin WelcomeCard you will receive a 40% discount on admission. Entry is free with a Berlin Museum pass. As one of Berlin's City Museums, entry to St. Nicholas is free every first Wednesday of the month. Entry is also free for children and young people under 18 years old. The Museum is open on Mondays. Several public tours take place during the week.
