OLD RAG MOUNTAIN in Under 3 Minutes - Shenandoah National Park
Old Rag Mountain in Under 3 Minutes, Shenandoah National Park
Old Rag is Shenandoah's most popular and most dangerous hike. It is listed as very strenuous. It is a 9.2-mile loop with about 2,400ft elevation gain. We hiked it in just over 5 hours, but that is highly dependent on your pace, physical fitness and how many people you run into on the trail.
The summit provided 360 degree panoramic views. There are several large boulders you can climb to get a great view of the valley.

Best Hike On The East Coast!! Old Rag Mountain Virginia... Call Me Bear Grylls
Went hiking at Old Rag Mountains in Virginia with may Dad and Uncle. We went during the fall so all of the leaves were changing and the weather was perfect! Could not have asked for better weather and company on the trail. Overall it was a great weekend!
4 Essential Stops in SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK [4K]
in this video, I talk about my 4 favorite things to do in Shenandoah National Park, VA. This beautiful national park lies in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, about 75 miles west of Washington DC. The park is over a hundred miles long and as you could imagine, there are countless activities to do within this park.
This video was taken in the end of April, so you can really see which trees have leaves and which do not. As we hiked or drove down from Skyline drive, even just 900 feet would be enough to completely transform.
Additional Notes:
SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK
General:
One of the few national parks on the east coast
Established in 1935
Home to the famous SKYLINE DRIVE which is 105 miles long
Virginial mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian mountain range), just 75 mi outside of Washington DC,
Land acquired through eminent domain. There is a long story there including claims of embellished claims local inbreeding
Parts of the park was used to train troops for WW2
5 campgrounds (some are first come first serve, and others allow reservations when in season)
3 lodges/cabins
9 major waterfalls to hike in and see – tallest one is 91 ft, but there are countless smaller ones along every creek
ROSE RIVER FALLS TRAIL / DARK HOLLOW FALLS:
Start at mile 49.4
Moderate difficulty, 4 mi, 910 ft elevation change
Hike clockwise to go down the rocky side (relatively easy) and then up the gradual fire road
You will also see Dark Hollow falls at the bottom and you can optionally add a quarter mile to hike up that waterfall
Cemetery on the way back
SKYLINE DRIVE
105 miles long, spanning the entire park
More than 75 overlook
Countless overlooks and pull offs to get the best view on the east or west side.
I recommend stopping at these all day to see amazing views, at sunrise, at sunset, and pull over to take a look at the stars at night
HAWKSBILL SUMMIT – start on Skyline drive pull off mile 45.5
1.7 mi round trip – which means you go up 520 ft
Very rapid ascent
Birds nest 2 – you can see Old Rag Mountain on your right
OLD RAG MOUNTAIN
You need to drive out of the park to get here
This does still require the park entrance fee, so be sure to stop and pay, or show them your pass
7.5 hrs (we did it in 6)
2380 ft elevation gain
Very strenuous – includes rock scrambling
9.2 mile circuit
Birds Nest 1 resides here – and you can see Hawksbill from the summit

Old Rag Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, VA - Backpacking
April 26, 2016 - Boys had a day off from school, so off to play in the mountains and take on a classic east-coast rock scramble in Shenandoah National Park on a weekday (i.e. no/less crowding!). I think they're up to it...
Up the Ridge Trail (via rock scramble), down Saddle Trail, then Weakley Hollow Fire Road around the base to finish.
GPS track here:
Sunny and hot at the bottom, windy and cool on top, with a brief rain shower on the summit while cooking lunch. 9.4 miles, and everybody did great!
Great summary of the route can be found here:

Description
Hiking Old Rag Mountain Virginia
Old Rag is Shenandoah's most popular and most dangerous hike. The number of blogs and websites about this hike attests to its popularity. The number of search and rescue missions each year attests to its danger. There's no doubt that the scramble is great fun and the views are spectacular. A day on Old Rag is one of Shenandoah's premier experiences. We want to be sure that your experience is not marred by an accident or health issue that could be prevented with good planning.
Be sure that you are physically able to complete this hike. The circuit hike is about 9 miles. There is a significant elevation change and a strenuous rock scramble that requires good upper body strength. Often, children and shorter adults need assistance navigating the scramble.
Take at least 2 quarts of water per person. Dehydration is one of the most prevalent issues.
Wear sturdy shoes that will support your ankles and allow you to to get a foothold without slipping.
Allow 7 or 8 hours. Yes, people do it in less time but, like all types of travel, you may experience unanticipated delays. It's always a good idea to have a headlamp in case you don't complete your hike before dark.
Be sure you know the forecast and never attempt this hike in wet or icy conditions.
Stay with your group and stay on the trail. Do not allow children to run ahead.
Although you need to be sure you have plenty of water and food, it is a good idea to pack as lightly as possible. Most hikers prefer fanny packs to backpacks which can be difficult to maneuver through the rock scramble.
Planning your hike on a weekday will enhance your experience. Old Rag can become very crowded on weekends. At times, the parking lot will be full and there will be long lines and substantial waits at some of the narrow passages. For current conditions follow us on Twitter: ShenandoahNPS.
Pets are strictly forbidden on Old Rag for their own and hikers' safety.
Directions
Although Old Rag Mountain is within the boundaries of Shenandoah National Park, most people approach it from the park's eastern boundary. Follow these directions to get to the trailhead:
From Sperryville, Route 211: Take Route 522 south for .8 mile. Turn right onto Route 231 and go 8 miles. Turn right onto Route 601 and follow the signs to the parking area (approximately 3 miles).
From Madison, Route 29 Business: TakeRoute 231 for 12.8 miles. Turn left onto Route 602 and follow the signs to the parking area (approximately 3 miles).
Parking
Especially during busy weekends, parking can be another challenge. All Old Rag hikers must use the large parking area at the Old Rag Fee Station. The small parking area at the Old Rag Trailhead is NOT open to the public.
Parking at the lot at the fee station is free. You are required to purchase an entrance permit. Landowners with property adjacent to the Park are charging a fee for parking on their property. Paying a private citizen to park does not affect the entrance fee. Be sure to check the Shenandoah lot for availability before paying to park.
Camp Hoover - Shenandoah National Park
Still pics and HD video of a 7.2 mile hike to Camp Hoover in Shenandoah National Park. Also known as Rapidan Camp. I also searched for a nearby USGS survey benchmark from 1929.
Lewis Falls in Shenandoah National Park
I hiked this trail down a mountain in Shenandoah National Park. It lead me to one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have got to see! There was a heavy fog and was hard to see but made for a great scene once arriving at the falls as you can see. Here is a good site for more information - This is a link to my hike -
Brown Mtn Trail - Shenandoah National Park
Still pics and HD video of a 4.8 mile hike along the Brown Mtn Trail. This is one of the more remote areas in the park. Last year, in the Spring of 2016 more than 10,000 acres burned here and you can see the damage on this hike. The forest is coming back though and in a few more years will be looking good again.
