Sakhalin Island, Russia on $200. Seafood, Skiing and Sushi @Russia: Tips, Tricks & Travel
In this episode of Russia: Tips, Tricks & Travel Tim goes to the little known yet massive Russian island that used to be (partially) part of the Japanese Empire.
Tim Kirby starts his journey downtown next to one of the most regular “guests” on our program Vladimir Lenin. From there he went to the amazing Japanese-styled Sakhalin Regional Museum. History sure makes a guy hungry, so on his way to the region’s first and oldest Japanese restaurant Tim stops by the Anton Pavlovich Chekhov memorial to pay his respects to a major player in the island’s history. At the restaurant Tim speaks with its founder and philanthropist Yutaka Miyanisi who shows our host the proper way to do sushi. One hint, it does not include mayo, not even spicy mayo!
From there Tim decides that he should share the island’s amazing seafood with his family and stocks up at the Central Market (“Успех”/”Uspekh”) with all sorts of fish, crab and caviar.
From there Tim drops his stuff at the Japanese built and inspired Santa Resort Hotel to see how hotel rooms made for the Land of the Rising Sun fare in Russia. After teaching the robot Japanese toilet who is boss Tim heads out to the ski slopes of the Gorny Vosdukh Ski Resort. Thankfully our hero survives the trip down the snowy routes and heads out to the Harat’s Pub downtown to meet up with a fan after it gets dark.
Next Tim has to track down said fan and does so using the old railway still built to Japanese Imperial standards. He then gets exclusive access to the port in Korsakov. From there Tim sneaks into the boat graveyard, you’ll see whether the guard dogs bit him or not jumping over the fence.

Great Railway Journeys, Sakhalin Russia
Russian train graveyard;-Hi Guy's, I have two very short videos here of some trains I saw and travelled on a recent work trip to Sakhalin, Sakhalin is part of Russia, and is Russia's largest island, which is about one-quarter the size of Japan, and just off the East coast of Russia, Look at these poor old trains we passed, left rusting and no doubt waiting to be broken up and scrapped in the not to distant future.

Views of Sakhalin Island in 1891
Here I present an album of photographs taken in 1891 of the Island of Sakhalin. These historical pictures from Imperial Russia include the daily life of the political exiles, photographs of the indigenous peoples of the island, and the lives of the settlers. A fascinating glimpse into a bygone world.

Return is the story of three children of families who came to the U.S.S.R. after the Spanish Civil War to save themselves from the horrors of war and the consequences of Franco's victory. Many personal experiences and anecdotes tell us how they were integrated into the Spanish community and Russian life at the same time.
Spaniards wished to go back to their motherland in the 1950s-60s, but the political situation forced them to remain in Russia until the period of Perestroika. After this, all of them were allowed to discover anew their first motherland and the faith they left behind in childhood.
The strongly personal aspect of this movie allows the spectator to learn about a mostly forgotten reality. The stories are accompanied by precious and rare historic material of the respective situations, further helping us to identify with the protagonists. Original Spanish music is used in order to depict the contradiction of the two realities, the Spanish Catholic culture and the Soviet atheist mentality.

Video emerged on Tuesday showing an unidentified woman struggling to walk during a snow storm in Uglegorsk, on the island of Sakhalin.
The island has been hit by a powerful cyclone, raging in the Far Eastern regions of Russia. The wind speed in the coastal areas is more than 40 metres per second (89 mph).
The ferry crossing of Kholmsk-Vanino is out of service in Sakhalin, and the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk airport is closed to air traffic.

Gunman kills two in church on Russia's Sakhalin island
Originally published on February 10, 2014
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The main Russian Orthodox church on the far-east island of Sakhalin was the site of fatal shootings on Sunday (February 9) after a gunman killed two people at a Russian Orthodox cathedral during services on Sunday.
Witnesses said a man in his 20s entered the cathedral at around 7 a.m. on Sunday as services were underway and for unknown reasons, the man began firing a weapon in the Cathedral of the Resurrection in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, which is the largest city on the isolated far-eastern Russian island of Sakhalin.
Reuters reports that both a Russian Orthodox nun and a worshiper were both fatally shot.
In addition to the two deaths, six others were also shot, and are being treated for non-life threatening wounds to the legs. Police immediately detained the suspect, who will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. One church official told a Russian news service that the suspect is very possibly mentally incompetent and an investigative committee will try to determine if that is the case.
Russian authorities say there is no apparent connection between the shooting and the ongoing Winter Olympics taking place in Western Russia's Sochi City.
Reuters also reported that the regional leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Archbishop Tikhon, has scheduled a special prayer service for victims and that the cathedral would hold a ceremony to cleanse it from the violence. Shootings in public buildings in Russia are extremely rare, but on February 3, a teenager used his father's rifle to shoot dead two adults before being arrested.
