Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, Port Angeles, Washi
A short video of the drive down Hurricane Ridge on our recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. This was taken on Tuesday, March 29th around noontime. We had just left the visitors center at the top and were on our way back down. The winter snowfall on this date had totaled well over 400 inches, with much of that still standing near the peak. Just incredible to see, especially for some schmo from the Southeast like me.

Enjoy my virtual Hike and nice scenery @ Hoh Rain Forest Olympic National Park Washington
With Relaxtion Music !
With an annual rainfall ranging from 140 to 170 inches, the Hoh Rain Forest is a lush, green wonderland, with mosses and ferns covering every tree and surface. According to the NPS, it is one of the finest remaining examples of temperate rainforest in the United States and is one of the park's most popular spots to visit. One visitor described walking in the forest as a Hansel and Gretel-type of feeling while another likened it to a fairy tale enchanted forest.
Most travelers begin at the Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center, which is staffed with rangers who can offer advice on what to see and do. The visitor center also houses exhibits and a bookstore. Two short nature trails loop through the forest near the center, the Hall of Mosses Trail (.8 miles) and the Spruce Nature Trail (1.2 miles). If you're up to the challenge, there is also a 17-mile trail that leads to Glacier Meadows, on the shoulder of Mount Olympus, called the Hoh River Trail.
The Hoh sits on the west side of Olympic National Park, about a two-hour drive from Port Angeles and less than an hour from Forks, Washington. It can be accessed via Upper Hoh Road, off of Highway 101. The visitor center, which is free to access, is open daily during the summer, generally open Friday through Sunday in the spring and fall (hours may vary) and closed December through early March.

Mountaineers Homesteaders and Artists - Ashford WA
Ashford Washington sits just 6 miles outside the Nisqually entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park. History is abundant here and it's a fun place to stay a while and look around. There are places to stay here in comfort just outside the main gates to the park and I'm certain you will meet some wonderful people with stories to tell about this place and it's past. It's somewhere we can't wait to come back to again. Thanks to the friendly people we meet we had fun discovering the story of the Ashford family. I hope you will enjoy it too when you come along with us.

PJ Lake - Olympic National Park - July 29, 2018
A dayhike along the .9 mile long trail to PJ Lake in Olympic National Park.
According to Robert L. Wood's Olympic Mountains Trail Guide, the small lake was named for Port Angeles pioneer P.J. Williams, who enjoyed fishing there.
The path begins at the old Waterhole Camp about 3.8 miles from the beginning of the Obstruction Point Road.
The Obstruction Point Road connects to the Hurricane Ridge Road, 17.6 miles south of Port Angeles at Big Meadow, near the visitor's center parking lot.
The trail descends an extremely steep grade about 600 feet in elevation before climbing back up about 150 feet to reach the subalpine lake.
Trekking poles are highly recommended, as are long pants in the summer months due to a large number of poison oak plants along the trail.

Hurricane Ridge Road bike
Mid week mid September at 6 PM is an excellent time to do this 4800 foot descent as road traffic is minimal. I used my mountain bike to keep speeds lower due to deer (braked 3 times) and scattered rain showers with top speed being 34 MPH. Total round trip distance, 36 miles (from Olympic National Park visitors center outside Port Angeles) to Hurricane Ridge visitor center at 5200 feet and back.
