Omey Island est une toute petite île située près de Claddaghduff. Elle n'est accessible qu'à marée basse. La mer se retire et il est alors possible de se rendre sur cette île en traversant à pied ou en voiture la plage de sable qui relie cette île à la petite ville de Claddaghduff.
Par curiosité, nous avons décidé d'effectuer la traversée en voiture. Le sol est ferme. Il suffit de suivre les poteaux installés dans le sable qui indiquent le chemin à suivre.
Cependant, il faut être tout de même prudent car il y a d'immenses flaques d'eau à certains endroits. Il est impossible d'évaluer ni la profondeur, ni la stabilité du sol.
Nous nous sommes tout de même lancés dans cette aventure et tout s'est bien déroulé autant à l'aller qu'au retour.
Il est important de connaître l'horaire des marées car la traversée pourrait être compromise. A marée haute, l'eau est assez profonde et peut recouvrir une voiture.
Près de 400 personnes habitaient sur cette île au XIXe siècle. Cependant, la famine a amené ces gens à quitter cet endroit.
Aujourd'hui, l'île est abandonnée. Quelques habitants n'y séjournent qu'en été.
Au bout de l'île, le chemin prend fin à proximité d'une longue plage de sable blanc.
Les ruines d'une église médiévale, un petit sanctuaire et une fontaine à dévotion sont toujours visibles sur l'île. Cependant, nous n'en avons pas fait la visite.

A short video of a road trip I made early one morning at the end of June. I headed up to Omey Island in County Galway and then to a small beach a few miles south near Kingstown , the weather was absolutely glorious....
Omey Island (Irish: Iomaidh) is a tidal island situated near Claddaghduff on the western edge of Connemara in County Galway, Ireland. From the mainland the island is inconspicuous and almost hidden. It is possible to drive or walk across a large sandy strand to the island by following the arrowed signs. At high tide, the water is deep enough to cover a car.
Inishturk (Inis Toirc in Irish, meaning Wild Boar Island) is a small island and a townland of County Galway, in Ireland. The island is also referred as Inishturk South (Irish: Inis Toirc Theas) in order to tell it apart from the Inishturk island located in County Mayo.

Despite there being a Yellow Weather Warning in place we decided to go ahead with our last minute trip to Omey Island in County Galway. It was very fortunate that we went ahead as we were rewarded with some beautiful weather. Picking limpets from the beach, mussels, home made pizza and fresh prawn and chicken kebabs, this was a fantastic feast. This trip proves that with very little planning, and a bit of good fortune with a break in the weather, that you can have a wonderful time on your doorstep if you only get up and head out. Thank you to everyone who attended and made the trip so much fun. See you on the next one.

Omey is a tidal Island in Connemara off the coast of Galway in the west of Ireland. From the mainland at Claddaghduff the island is inconspicuous and almost hidden. In fact you could drive along the coast road and not even realise the island exists in the panoramic view below you.
Sweeneys bar of Claddaghduff will be your first port of call. Theres a nice shop there and a post office, beer, wine, petrol, diesel, gas and briquettes. From there you can check the tides and take in the view. Omey will come alive before your eyes. The size of the strand will become apparent if the tide is open. Be careful with the tide though, it can close with remarkable speed. Cross the strand by car or foot to enter Omey Island.
When the sea surrounds the island the atmosphere changes as if everything is at peace and in harmony. Poets, philosophers, writers and artists have been inspired by this sensation. Omey is as much a part of the spirit of the community as the people are. This is a place of joy and sorrow, of life and death. Dont be fooled into thinking that time stands still here. Everything is constantly moving and changing with shifting sands, water, rocks and skies. This is a magical and mysterious place.
