The Omsk Cadet Corps (before 1925 - the 1st Siberian Emperor Alexander I Cadet Corps ) is the oldest and leading military educational institution in Siberia that has produced in its history a brilliant galaxy of marshals, generals, officers, sergeants and cadets, outstanding and well-known state, political, scientific and public figures. The Corps was one of seven cadet corps in pre-revolutionary Russia and the only one in Siberia to be patronised by a member of the Imperial family...
The Corps was founded on May1, 1813 as the Omsk Military Cossack School. From 1826-1845, regulations for the school were approved and the name changed to the School of the Siberian Linear Cossack Army. The statute on the school stipulated that only the children of Cossacks of all ranks could enter the school. This was changed in 1833 when the school was granted permission to accept children from the noble classes from officers of regular troops and officials throughout Siberia. By so doing, the prestige of the school, increased manifestly.
In November 1845, the school was renamed, the Siberian Cadet Corps. During the reform of military education in 1866, the Cadet Corps was transformed into a military gymnasium . By so doing, pupils included those of non noble classes, and the school lost its closed character and class division was eliminated. This also enabled civilian teachers to enter the school, where a number combined educational activity with research....
In 1882 the gymnasium was again transformed into a cadet corps upon the accession of Emperor Alexander III. Instead of classes, companies were formed, headed by officers.Teachers were once again only officers and great emphasis was placed on parades and shows....
By 1900, the Khabarovsk Cadet School was established and the Irkutsk Cadet School was in the process of being created. As a consequence, the Siberian Cadet Corps lost its all-Siberian significance. By Order No. 974 of September 18, 1907, it was renamed the Omsk Cadet Corps....
Today, in much altered circumstances, the Omsk Cadet Corps still exists.

Brutal banishment & military might of freezing Siberia
Omsk, in south-western Siberia and more than 2,000 kilometers from Moscow, is particularly famous for two things -- the exile history of the tsarist regime and its centuries-old military tradition. The fate of the exiles sent here by the Russia's tsarist regime was not easy, with a long and dangerous route to get there, and prison and forced labor once they arrived.

Russia: Man seizes school-girl hostages, demands pizza and Sprite
A 25 year old man seized four hostages Thursday afternoon in the southern Russian city of Astrakhan. With a fake bomb and a plastic handgun, Aleksandr Kuptsov locked himself, his girlfriend and four other people in a classroom at the Volga-Caspian Marine Fishery College.
Police stormed into the building and detained Kuptsov's girlfriend, who allegedly acted as his accomplice. Kuptsov himself was later taken into police custody and driven away. If found guilty of hostage-taking charges, he may face up to 15 years in jail.
