Incense Pit Stop in Hue Vietnam
GAP and SQ trip to Vietnam and Singapore:
Our Motorbike tour got us off the beaten track to see the wonders of Hue. We stopped at spot where incense is hand made - who knew it was so difficult?!?! Check out the amazing colours in the background and have a laugh while our friends attempt a new skill.
Making Incense in Vietnam
Shaking the Sticks | Huế, Vietnam
Come New Year, many Buddhists in Huế take a trip to the local Chinese Temple, where they practice Chien Tung (Qiāntǒng), or Kau Cim, a tradition of shaking a cylinder that contains fortuitous sticks, in which one eventually pops out of the cylinder, representing the shaker's fortune. Shaking the sticks is common during Tết, the Vietnamese New Year, and the event can be detected by nose from a mile away, as innumerable incense sticks smolder and the wind carries their smoke and ash over the roofs of the city. Those present at the temple itself involuntarily tear up at the smoke that clouds the holy space.
Join us as we visit the temple with our friend, Thi, during one of the last days of Tết, before everyone has to return to work and school.

Motorbike tour of countryside around Huế, Vietnam
A motorbike cavalcade turned up at our hotel to take us on a tour of the countryside around Huế stopping off at various places of interest. First stop was a dragon boat trip on the Perfume River followed by a visit to the Thien Mu Pagoda (or its alternative name of the Celestial Lady Pagoda or Fairy Woman Pagoda!) where the monk Thich Quang Duc came from, the one who drove his car to Saigon in 1963 and burnt himself to death as a protest at President Ngo Dinh Diem's repressive regime. The remains of his car and the famous photo taken of him in his orange robes, engulfed in flames, are on display at the pagoda as a memorial to his sacrifice.
We set off again on the motorbikes, weaving along some really narrow alley ways between people's houses and shops. Suddenly we would get to the end of the village track we were on and emerge onto a main road, straight into the flow of traffic crossing to get to the next track - white knuckle ride eeeeeekkkkk! We eventually made it out into the countryside, passing paddy fields and travelling along small concrete tracks through villages and alongside little rivers. We stopped at a village fair/market where we met the lovely 'Black Teeth Mama' and found out about the old ways of farming from her. She showed us how she had made her teeth black over the years. The story goes that before toothpaste they used to get yellowed teeth, despite their attempts to clean them with salt and the like, and so they preferred to make them black as they thought it made them stronger. While we were there a film crew filmed both Black Teeth Mama and our group and interviewed some of us as part of the Tourism Festival Week going on in Huế. Later some of the group tried their hand at this funny game trying to break hanging pots whilst blindfolded with varying success much to the amusement of the crowd.
Next stop was vegetarian lunch cooked by the nuns of a Buddhist nunnery. The head nun was the fattest Vietnamese person we had seen! The local Buddhist worshipers donate money to support the monestary and obviously the living is good, for the head nun at least! After lunch she took us to their temple to show us how they pray to the female Buddha.
After our visit to the nunnery we headed off again on the motorbikes, stopping at an incense stick and conical hat making place. A girl showed us how to make incense sticks, rolling the kind of clay like putty (made of sandalwood and some kind of chemicals mixed together). The conical hats were made on a kind of frame in layers with a paper pattern between them that you could see when you held the finished hat up to the light.
Our motorbike guys then zoomed along what would be lovely, quiet footpaths through the woods in the UK, but it seemed to the Vietnamese hiking is biking! They were even honking their horns there! We ended up at the top of a hill opening out onto a wonderful view looking out over a bend in the Perfume River and overlooking famous Hamburger Hill.
Last stop of our motorbike tour was to the Elephant and Tiger arena where the Emperor used to have his prize elephant trample the poor tiger to death. The elephant always won as they put the tiger at a severe disadvantage removing both its claws and teeth before the fight! We also had a go at catching the noisy cicadas with a long stick. Then it was back on the bikes and a scary ride through the busy streets of Huế and back to our hotel.
What a great day out arranged by our fab tour leader Phat-boy-slim as part of our wonderful Intrepid tour of Vietnam (April 2012).

Entry from: Hue, Vietnam
Entry Title: Tour on Two Wheels
Entry:
We decided to fly from Hanoi to Hue (pronounced Way) to try to hurry ourselves a long a bit. (Tet is drawing near and we don't have a lot of time left, plus we've heard the bus trip along this stretch of road is gruelling.) We caught a 6 am flight so had to be up at 4 am. ( I would never do these things to myself at home!) Many of the local people were up already and the streets were bustling. I don't know if people here sleep . . . . Upon our arrival at the airport we purchased bus tickets to the centre of town. Our bus mates, two young women from New Zealand, a couple from Seedney (Sydney, Australia) and a Scottish-Canadian fellow from Vancouver (who had owned the 51st St. Fabric Warehouse in Saskatoon - it's a small world) walked in a herd to find accommodation. We meandered through the streets for about 20 minutes (taking several wrong turns - addresses can be difficult to find here as a street's name will change several times). It was the longest I've had to carry my big pack during the trip and I was glad that I had spent time getting into better shape! At the Aussie's suggestion, the seven of us agreed to take a motorbike (xe om) tour and went to the Cafe on Thu (Two) Wheels recommended in the Lonely Planet guidebook. The tour business is run by nine brothers and their lone sister looks after the cafe. All over the cafe walls and ceiling are written testamonies from travellers from all over the world. Of course, there's lots of puns related to the word Thu - in the bathroom was written, We aim Thu please, you aim, Thu, please, etc., etc. For $6 US, we were toured around all over town from 10:30 am until 5 pm. Martin and the Aussie fellow drove their own bikes; the rest of us rode behind one of the brothers. Somehow the foreigners toot-tooting did not have the assertiveness of the horn honking of the locals. Martin said it was fun, but he probably didn't see as much as I did since he was so busy concentrating on the traffic! Hue (population 300,000) is a Unesco World Heritage site located on the Song Huong (Perfume) River. The many attractions include temples, pagodas, emperors' tombs and dozens of Buddhas. Hue is also the location of the DMZ (the Demilitarised Zone), the demarkation line between South and North Vietnam. Much of what you can see are placed where historical events happened and unless you're really into war history, not really worth checking out (we didn't go). We travelled in a motorcycle gang throughout town, criss-crossing rice paddies and passing through the local market. Our tour guide, Minh (one of the nine brothers) provided us with an education on monks and what the various coloured robes mean (gray - novice; orange - more experienced monk; yellow - highest level; brown - colour worn outside the temple). Many of the monks are young boys who are orphaned or are very poor. Becoming a monk ensures that they will get an education and be provided with food, clothing and shelter. It is important to dress appropriately to enter a temple (no shorts, no bare shoulders) and to always remove your shoes. Vietnamese (as well as Thais) are very particular about the feet and the head. You should be careful never to point your foot at anyone when sitting and never touch anyone on the head (including children). They also believe that pointing is rude (a hard thing for us westerners to get used to!).

HOW TO MAKE INCENSE STICK
by Marco Petruzzelli
tvreporter.it
Nepal, Kathmandu, how to make incense.
Incense (from Latin: incendere, to burn) is composed of aromatic biotic materials, which release fragrant smoke when burned. The term incense refers to the substance itself, rather than to the odor that it produces. It is used in religious ceremonies, ritual purification, aromatherapy, meditation, for creating a mood, and for masking bad odours. The use of incense may have originated in Ancient Egypt, where the gum resins and oleo gum resins of aromatic trees were imported from the Arabian and Somali coasts to be used in religious ceremonies.
Incense is composed of aromatic plant materials, often combined with essential oils. The forms taken by incense differ with the underlying culture, and have changed with advances in technology and increasing diversity in the reasons for burning it. Incense can generally be separated into two main types: indirect-burning and direct-burning. Indirect-burning incense (or non-combustible incense) is not capable of burning on its own, and requires a separate heat source. Direct-burning incense (or combustible incense) is lit directly by a flame and then fanned or blown out, leaving a glowing ember that smoulders and releases fragrance. Direct-burning incense comes in several forms, including incense sticks (or joss sticks), cones, and pyramids.

Offerings and prayers at Erawan Shrine - Bangkok
People light incense sticks at the Erawan Shrine in Bangkok, Thailand. Famous for bringing good fortune, the Shrine currently attracts millions of visitors each year.
Thailand is a buddhist country. One of the famous temples in Bangkok is The Erawan Shrine, this is also the temple you can't miss for asking for blessing during your Bangkok tour. The Erawan Shrine is located on the corner of Ratchadamri Road and Ploenchit Road, next to the Grand Hyatt. The shrine is a colorful spot to see Thai people make offerings and asking for blessings. The large spirit house here is decorated with yellow flowers and small wooden elephants. Classical Thai dance performances also take place here as a merit-making gesture.
Bangkok is the capital and the most populous city of Thailand. It is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometres (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta in Central Thailand, and has a population of over eight million, or 12.6 percent of the country's population. Over fourteen million people (22.2 percent) live within the surrounding Bangkok Metropolitan Region, making Bangkok an extreme primate city, dwarfing Thailand's other urban centres in terms of importance.
Bangkok traces its roots to a small trading post during the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century, which eventually grew in size and became the site of two capital cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin in 1782. Bangkok was at the heart of Siam's (as Thailand used to be known) modernization during the later nineteenth century, as the country faced pressures from the West. The city was the centre stage of Thailand's political struggles throughout the twentieth century, as the country abolished absolute monarchy, adopted constitutional rule and underwent numerous coups and uprisings. The city grew rapidly during the 1960s through the 1980s and now exerts a significant impact among Thailand's politics, economy, education, media and modern society.
