City Description:
Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Malaysia’s Sabah state in the northern part of the island of Borneo. Often referred to as KK, it’s a coastal city partly surrounded by rainforest. It's known for its bustling markets, modern boardwalk, beaches and waterfront Kota Kinabalu City Mosque. It is also a gateway to Kinabalu National Park, the home of 4,095m-high Mount Kinabalu.Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, made up of 5 major islands off the coast, is home to beaches, coral reefs, tropical jungle and waterfront houses built on stilts. Near the airport, Tanjung Aru is a beach area with dramatic sunsets, plus dining and nightlife. Sabah Museum displays headhunter artifacts and hosts an ethnobotanical garden and a zoo. Visitors can follow boardwalks through protected mangrove forest and bird habitat at Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre or observe orangutans at Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, which is about 20km south of the city.
Weather and Events:
Peak travel periods are Dec–Feb and Jun–Sep. The tropical climate is hot and humid year-round, with a monsoon season Oct–Mar, though rain is always possible. Many shops and restaurants close during Chinese New Year (dates vary) and Hari Raya Puasa (dates vary). Key events include Sabah Fest (May), with traditional music, dance, food and crafts, and the Tadau Ka'amatan rice-harvest festival (May), with rice wine, rituals and a singing competition.

Colourful Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia
I'm still pinching myself to be on the island of BORNEO! I don't know about you, but Borneo has always been a very exotic place in my mind and being here feels like a dream. There's a lot to see in Malaysia and in this video we're spending the day in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah exploring the city by foot. KK, as it's known here, was left devastated after Allied bombings in 1945 and only three buildings survived. One of them is now a street art gallery, one is the Sabah Tourism Office, and one is a clock tower that's also been used as a lighthouse. Check below for more our adventures in Malaysia ????

The world is your home. What time will you be home for dinner?
Travel Cheap to the Borneo Jungle, near Sandakan. Sabah, Malaysia, for under $20 Day. Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center while you are in Borneo. This is an uncaged sanctuary for orangutans who have lost their jungle habitat from palm oil deforestation.
Borneo is one of the largest islands in the world. Borneo is south of Vietnam between Singapore and the Philippines. Borneo is so large that it includes parts of Indonesia and Malaysia and all of Brunei.
As you fly over the Borneo Jungle, it looks like over 50% of the old growth jungle has been cleared for palm oil farms. I asked a palm oil farming engineer I met on the bus about it and he said the Malaysian government will only allow 50% of the jungle to be cleared. But from the air it looks like it is already more than 50% palm oil farms. Conservation organizations have been reporting on this for some time, but the international community continues to consume palm oil for cosmetics and other products. Please read labels and use products that do not contain palm oil.
You may want to come visit the Borneo Jungle before it is gone. I see very little political desire to save this jungle.
Things to Do: Although I came to see the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center, I also really enjoyed the Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, and The Rainforest Discovery Centre. The owner of the Sun Bear sanctuary is a wealth of knowledge about how to save the jungle. Other than the scuba diving in Sipadan, these sanctuaries were my favorite days in Borneo.
The Proboscis Monkey’s stole the show. The orangutans are amazing creatures, but don’t miss the proboscis monkeys. Also, although I only spent a few hours at the Sun Bear Sanctuary, my friend Charles Hummel spent the whole day there and got some amazing pictures. My camera was giving me trouble and Charles was kind enough to allow you to see some of his photos.
Accommodations and Food: The Sepilok Jungle Resort is right across the street from the orangutan sanctuary, and next door to the sun bear sanctuary. It is also only a few blocks to the rainforest discovery and the resort will arrange for your travel to see the proboscis monkey sanctuary. A private hotel room at the Sepilok Jungle Resort goes for $41/night and a hostel dorm goes for about $10/night there. Breakfast is included and lunch or dinner is about $3-4 each. There is a swimming pool on the premises which is a nice treat after a day walking in the jungle. The hotel was booked upon my arrival, so I stayed in the dorms and my cost of living including food but not excursions, was just under $20 per day.
Sandakan: I didn’t spend any time in the city of Sandakan, but friends did. Hostels are $7, hotel rooms are $17, and meals are about $3. A furnished townhouse just outside Sandakan is $26/night on Airbnb.com. The cost of living estimates below are based on Sandakan rather than the Sepilok Jungle Resort.
Transportation: I flew from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan for $44 which gave me a nice view of Kinabalu Mountain and confirmed the same level of deforestation I saw in other parts of Malaysia. The taxi to the Sepilok Jungle Resort was $12. After visiting all the sanctuaries, I caught the bus to Semporana for $8, which took 5 hours. You catch the bus right up the street from the Sepilok Jungle Resort. Just ask for directions.

Malaysia 1 Arrival
Our arrival in Kota Kinabalu, walking around the city and visiting a market and a mall.
Wonders of Sabah
NORTH BORNEO SAFARI
As the gateway to lush tropical rainforests, wetlands with meandering rivers, and islands, we are strategically based in Sandakan, in the Malaysian state of Sabah, 30 minutes away by air from the state capital Kota Kinabalu. Explore and discover some of the world's most iconic and endangered wildlife, plants and a myriad of cultures as you venture on a journey with us. With our wealth of experience in running inbound tours, North Borneo Safari offers our guests only the best in nature safari voyages, some of which are tailor-made for special interest travellers. Our love for nature has also led us into sharing Sabah with the world by providing local knowledge and logistics support to filming groups and special interest companies.
Your journey of discovery can take several different paths, and we suggest selecting trips that appeal to you from a list of possibilities:
Photo Safaris are perfect for nature photography enthusiasts, both beginners and professionals. We too are passionate about photographing the colours of nature, and understand the needs of photographers who need extra time in the field to capture the best possible angle, or a winning shot.
Bird Watching, a niche market, is fast gaining popularity in this part of the world. The island of Borneo, and Sabah, is home to a range of avifauna that come in the softest to the most striking shades.
Though sightings can never be guaranteed, Wildlife Safaris are the best way to see some of the world's most endearing animals in the wild -- Orang Utans, Proboscis Monkeys and Borneo Pygmy Elephants, to name a few. Misty mornings on the majestic Kinabatangan River as fishermen make their way on tiny boats, views of rustic wooden homes and the orange-purple hue of sunset are extras that showcase the best of Sabah's beauty.
We have experience in assisting with documentary film shoots and this includes knowledge in necessary permits for filming in Malaysia. We also offer research on locations suitable for filming based on needs of our clients.
Nature Photography Workshops are available for both foreign and local photography fans. Led by our very own professional photographer Cede Prudente and other experts, workshops are designed to pass on knowledge on the finer points of photography. Contact us for details.
We also provide field work assistance for surveys on wildlife and birds, a service useful for researchers, scientists, universities and other groups or individuals.

Kota Kinabalu, Sabbah Malaysia
July 29-30 2017
You have to go to Jesselton Point to be able to book tickets for island hopping.
Manukan Island, Sapi Island are only two of the best islands in Kota Kinabalu. The location of Hard Rock Cafe Kota Kinabalu is perfect, it's inside the mall by the sea. They also have night market which they sell products in low price. Lots of places to go and see in Kota Kinabalu, it's also safe (policemen are everywhere).
Kota Kinabalu City Tour
This is one of the most fantastic cities you ever have been to. A modern capital with a warm hospitality that you hardly find in many places around the world. Just around a corner you have long sandy beaches, paradise islands, virgin coral reefs, tropical rain forests; and the mighty Mount Kinabalu is only 90 minutes away.
Kota Kinabalu is situated on the tropical island of Borneo, and is the state capital of the Malaysian state Sabah, which is one of the two states of East Malysia. The location of the city is absolutely amazing; and from the airport it is just a short ride to mostly any hotel. You find a world class sailing marina and championship golf courses as well as both first class holiday resorts and good hotels for the budget traveler.
