The Papersky Tour de Nippon traveled to Onomichi for this exciting tour that took across the inland sea as we cycled our way across three islands. We enjoyed the mediterranean atmosphere of the Seitonaikai. The tour also visited several farms to gather ingredients for a meal we prepared and served at Japan's premier bicycle hotel Onomichi U2.

Onomichi Hiroshima, Japan. 広島,日本 (Temple walk)
Onomichi is a city located in Hiroshima prefecture. It is a small city but it is famous for its Temple walk. The walk is about two and a half kilometres long.
Unfortunately I didn't video as much as I should have. There is much more to see on the Temple walk with many shops along the way. The best time to go is spring as there are many sakura blossoms along the temple walk.

Japan Travel: Falling in Love with Japanese Culture on the Temple Walk in Onomichi, Hiroshima 11 Moochan
Visitors to Hiroshima often overlook Onomichi, a quaint port town along the Seto Inland Sea, located about 90 minutes via local train from Hiroshima Station. With its steep hills and sloping geography, Onomichi did not suffer many damages during the war. As a result, many historic buildings are still intact, allowing visitors a glimpse of Japanese history.
Onomichi is famous for its temples. Being a port town, in the past, successful merchants donated heavily to build temples to ensure the town’s prosperity. Visitors can explore the 25 temples along the “Temple Walk”, a popular temple route. Visitors can find maps of “Temple Walk” available at the Tourist Information Office at Onomichi Station. The route is marked and there are many signs as well. Though the route is only 2.5 kilometers, as Onomichi is famous for its slopes, proper footwear is strongly advised.
The most famous temple on the Temple Walk would have to be Senkoji Temple. Founded by Kobo Daishi in 806, Senkoji is located on the mountain. Though visitors can hike up the mountain, most visitors opt to take the ropeway. Visitors may be interested in the 15 meter tall Tama no Iwa or Jewel Rock. This rock is said to have glowed all night illuminating the surrounding sea. The temple has many miniature Jizo statues which are also popular. The park above the temple is a beautiful place to rest and take in the beautiful surrounding. Please note, this park is quite crowded during the cherry blossom season, as the Senkoji Park is one of hundred most beautiful cherry blossom places in Japan.
Jidoji Temple, the final temple on the Temple Walk is also quite popular. Dating back to the early 7th century, it is said to the oldest temple in this region. Visitors should take time to take in the main hall and the 2 storey pagoda as they are both National Treasures. Though the entrance to the temple is free, a nominal fee (600 yen) will allow visitors into the temple buildings. The temple has many beautiful, historic statues which are registered as Cultural Treasures. Though there is a Japanese guided tour, the beauty of the artwork on the fusuma, sliding door, elegant rooms and breathtaking paintings holds no language barriers. The temple’s well maintained karesansui style garden is also a point of interest.
There are many things to take in, experience and observe on Onomichi’s Temple Walk. This 2.5 kilometer route on the varying terrains allows visitors to understand Japan’s proud cultural past.
Mitakidera Temple in 4K - Hiroshima's Secret Jewel - 三瀧寺●広島市 - Japan As It Truly Is
The gorgeous Mitakidera Temple is the unseen gem ignored by the tourist mobs. Come and discover what they are all missing.
Mitakidera (三瀧寺) really should be at the top of the list for anyone going to visit Hiroshima City. But while so many go to see the Peace Park and museum, very few find this tranquil oasis and end of missing one of Japan's very finest. Mitaki-dera has a history going back 1200 years, and its name means Temple of the 3 Waterfalls. You can actually see several inside, and a flowing stream all around you will help deliver the Japan experience you've always wanted - and these days is harder to come by with the huge tourist crowds all around you.
The Mitakidera Temple also suffered damage from the Atomic bombing, being barely more than 3 km from the explosion. The Tahoto Pagoda was moved there in 1951 from Wakayama as a memorial to those killed. Today Mitakidera has a forest ravine stroll with statues on both mountainsides looking down, and a beautiful verdant green that almost glows around you.
For those interested in hiking, you can also go through the temple and take some trails leading up to the 356m mountaintop. Mitaki-dera is also beautiful in late November for its beautiful autumn colors, and their annual Maple Festival is on the 3rd Sunday of November. The cherry blossoms are also beautiful, on average starting around the end of March.
Mitakidera is a 20 minute walk from the JR Kabe Line's Mitaki Station, on Hiroshima City's west side. You can also take Bus #22 from Hiroshima Stn to Mitaki Kannon. Admission is 200 yen. Open hours are 8 AM to 5:30 PM (Dec-Feb ~5 PM).

Onomichi ✿ Kosanji: Hiroshima's Most Beautiful Secret - 尾道市の耕三寺 - Japan As It Truly Is
Few make it to Onomichi, fewer still to Kosanji - one of Japan's most beautiful temples. The detail and size are astonishing.
Kosanji is not old, though. It was expanded from a villa made in 1927 by an industrialist for his mother. After she died in 1934, in 1936 Kōsanji grew into a temple built in memorial to all mother's love for their children, and the current form took over 3 decades to construct.
One of the most fantastic elements is the Hell Cave, combining elements that remind you of Buddhist cosmology, Disneyland, Halloween, and Dante's Inferno.
For experienced Japan travelers, if you think you have seen some of the buildings elsewhere, you are right - there are clones of the Yomeimon Gate in Nikko and the Byodoin Phoenix Hall in Uji. The amount of detail put into the entire temple is simply astounding, and you haven't seen the best of Japan until you see this place.
People are often surprised how colorful the place is, a lot more like SE Asian temples, and traditionalists may frown at how bright, even gaudy, some things may look. Some Japanese fret at how it's more of a museum than a temple. But after getting templed out in other cities like Kyoto, where everything can become a blur, you certainly won't forget this place long after you leave it.
Additionally, there is the Miraishin no Oka, a massive stone structure at the top of the hill made of marble shipped in from Italy.
Sadly, few travelers know this place exists, and they leave Onomichi thinking it is just a quaint hillside walk though some humdrum small temples.

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido Cycling Route near Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan
The Shimanami Kaido Cycle Route links the main islands of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan through a series of bridges and islands in the Seto Inland Sea.
The 70km cycle trail takes you between islands across a series of impressive bridges with special cycle lanes and for added fun there's a network of ferries to help you get back. We rented bikes in Onomichi and set off to explore some of the trail which is a great day out for those who enjoy cycling.

An old fashioned town located along the Seto Inland Sea in the eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture, Onomichi (尾道) has many interesting sites and places for locals and tourists to explore. In addition to the temples, museums, parks and gardens, Onomichi is the “Honshu” mainland point for the Shimanami Kaido Bridge. And is the major port for the small islands within the Seto Inland Sea.
Onomichi is the home to many temples. In the past, rich merchants donated money to build temples within the port town to ensure prosperity. Visitors may choose to explore Onomichi’s famous “Temple Walk” which leads visitors to 25 temples. However, as Onomichi is also famous for its steep slopes, proper footwear is recommended.
Onomichi is the home to many respected authors, such as Fumiko Hayashi, author of “Horoki” (“Vagabond’s Song” in English) which was adapted into the anime “Wandering Days.” Artists will enjoy looking the museums such as the Hirayama Museum, famous for Artist Hirayama’s Silk Road desert landscapes paintings of Iran, Iraq and China. Many movies have been filmed here, including Yasujiro Ozu’s globally famous film “Tokyo Monogatari.”
Cyclists love Onomichi and its access to the Shimanami Kaido Bridge, the bridge which connects Honshu to Shikoku. The Shimanami Kaido Bridge has exits and entrances for drivers and cyclists to visit the small islands lying in the Seto Inland Sea. Onomichi, being the Honshu home of the bridge, has cycle rental stores, repair stores, even bicycle storage for those who opt the island hopping via ship.
Yet, there is more to the city of Onomichi. From the old-fashioned family owned business in the covered shopping arcade near the train station, to the modern U2 cycling support facility, there is something for everyone here. Traditional Japan meets Modern Japan with family fun festivals such as the summer fireworks festival or autumn Betcha Matsuri (where local “demons” run around hitting children on the head to knock some sense into them). Beautiful cherry blossom parks in the spring, artwork and history, cycling and temple touring…all available in the small, port city of Onomichi.
