Onsen : Japanese public bath.I have discovered that Japanese onsen is one of my favorite things to do in Japan. When ever I travel to Japan I try to go to the public baths and discover new ones - all over Japan!. But I think that the experience at this onsen was an unforgettable experience. Which is why I made this video. Unzen Onsen (雲仙温泉) is a hot spring resort town near the peak of Mount Unzen. Not too far from Nagasaki, the area originally developed as a temple town that in its prime was large enough to be compared to Koyasan. In the Meiji Period, the town became one of Japan's first tourist resorts popular among foreigners, and a hint of Western influenced architecture can still be seen about town. Unzen Onsen's location makes it a good base from which to explore Mount Unzen.
The resort is surrounded on several sides by hot spring fields. Also known as hells (jigoku), these barren rocky areas are littered with billowing steam vents and gushing hot springs from which milky, acidic and sulfurous water bubbles straight up out of the ground. The hells were once used to execute Christian rebels after the failed Shimabara Rebellion, but today its spring water has the more pleasant task of warming up holidaymakers in the ryokan baths around town.

Unzen Onsen (雲仙 温泉) es un pueblo de aguas termales cerca de la cima del monte Unzen. No muy lejos de Nagasaki, el área desarrollada originalmente como un templo de ciudad que en su mejor momento era lo suficientemente grande como para ser comparado con Koyasan. En el periodo Meiji, la ciudad se convirtió en uno de los primeros complejos turísticos de Japón populares entre los extranjeros, y un toque de arquitectura occidental influenciado todavía se puede ver por la ciudad. 1. Mud Flood Park or Mizunashi Honjin Fukae is a park located at one of the affected sites of the eruption of Mt. Unzen near the city of Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture in 1991, which left an avalanche of earth, debris, and volcanic ashes around the area. shoreexcursions.asia

3. Mt. Myoken-dake, with a height of 1,333 meters is a small-sized composite volcano, formed around 15,000 years ago along with other mountains in the range.

GETTING STEAMY in UNZEN, NAGASAKI
I took a drive up to Nagasaki Prefecture for a weekend. This was day 1 - Unzen. Unzen is a small onsen resort town near Mount Unzen. It is known for nature and hot springs so I checked it out.

Unzen Miyazaki Ryokan
Nagaski Prefecture is on the westernmost side of Kyushu Island, and Unzen stands at he center of Shimabara Peninsula. Azumaen ryokan is located about 2 hrs drive by express bus from Nagasaki Airport.
You can also get to Unzen by public bus about 100 min from Nagasaki Station. The hot spring of Unzen is characterized by its sulfurous hot water with high acidity which is uniquely high comparing to hot springs in Europe where the hot spring treatment is actively performed. The temperature of the hot spring of Unzen is as hot as around 90 degree Celcius.
At latitude above 700 meters, Unzen is quite cool throughout the year. Unzen has one of Japan's most highly reputed deluxe resorts and the surrounding natural scenery is breathtaking. Unzen was the first place in Japan to be designated a natinal park.
Unzen Miyazaki Hotel is part of all this wonderful scenery and is dedicated to ensuring every guest a relaxed and highly enjoyable visit. Unzen Miyazaki Hotel is located it the heart of Unzen HOT SPA and the entrance to the famous " Unzen Hell Valley" is just in front of Hotel.
This Hotel has more than 75 years history and The Emperor and Prince have visited this area and stayed at Miyazaki Hotel in the past .This Japanese style Hotel has 98 rooms and most of rooms consists of Japanese style rooms.
This Hotel has very a beautiful Japanese garden in it's premises and is boast of biggest size of garden in this area. Check-in time is 13:00 and check-out time is 11:00, so you can stay more than 20 hours if you would like to relax at hotel.
This hotel has big banquet room, meeting rooms, Japanese restaurant, bar and reading rooms, small business center for internet connection, coffee shop, souvenir shop. You can view the part of Hell Valley from Lobby Area.

This hot spa bath is actually a rock pool joined to a lake by a small stream. The hot spring water goes out ..the cold lake water comes in. Through the crystal clear water you can see bubbles rising from the spring, in the gravel at the bottom of the pool. In Japan this is called a Rotenburo... and that simply means an Outdoor Spa Bath. Almost every Ryokan, Minshuku or Spa Resort that Toursgallery put their tour groups in will provide one of these for guests to use for free. All accommodation also provide an indoor bath as well. I was curious why Miso is such a staple and now know: It is rich in minerals, vitamins, and being fermented, provides the gut with beneficial bacteria. Wow!

Visitors from all over Japan and abroad come to Beppu, located in Oita Prefecture, Kyushu, for the wonderful hot springs bath, or onsen. This city is blessed by eight different springs: Beppu, Kannawa, Myoban, Kankaiji, Hamawaki, Kamegawa, Horita and Shibaseki. Visitors can enjoy these hot springs at ryokans (inns) or public baths. With these eight natural hot springs flowing in the city, it is no wonder that Beppu produces more hot springs water than any other onsen (hot springs) resort in Japan.
In addition to the springs, Beppu offers its visitors a large of baths. Conventional hot springs bath, indoor and outdoor, can be found here. In addition, sand baths, steam baths and mud baths can be experienced here. Sand bathers are buried in naturally warm, almost blackish sand. Steam baths are baths that are heated from the hot springs’ steam. Mud baths are baths which use hot springs water which contain fine qualities of ore mud.
Takegawara Spa is Beppu’s most famous bath house. Built in 1879, it is one of the oldest bathhouses. Though renovated a few times, its wooden roof is symbolic of a Beppu bathhouse. Visitors can experience conventional baths as well as sand baths here. Note: the water is hot here, so please proceed with care.

Hell (地獄, Jigoku)
Beppu Jigoku
Beppu, Oita Prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, producing more hot spring water than any other resort in the country. The hells of Beppu (Beppu Jigoku) are eight spectacular hot springs for viewing rather than bathing. The sea hell features a pond of boiling, blue water. In its spacious gardens, there are a few secondary, orange colored hells and a large, clear water pond with lotus flowers whose large leaves are strong enough to carry small children.
One of the hells is named after the mud bubbles, which emerge from boiling mud pools and look like the shaven heads of monks. On the grounds of the cooking pot hell visitors can drink the hot spring water, enjoy hand and foot baths, inhale the hot spring steam and try various snacks cooked or steamed by the hot spring.
The blood pond hell features a pond of hot, red water. It is one of the most photogenic of the eight hells. The spout hell features a boiling hot geyser, which erupts every 30-40 minutes for about 6-10 minutes. A stone plate above the geyser hinders it to reach its full height.
Unzen Jigoku
Mount Unzen is an active volcano in the centre of Shimabara peninsula. In 1991, a great-scale eruption flow sacrificed 43 peoples. About 5km southwestern of the mountain peak there is Unzen hot spring resort with about a dozen of hotels and ryokans, and some public bathhouses, and the field called Unzen Jigoku where hot spring and volcanic gas spout. Boiling, bubbling pits of water smell like rotten eggs. Unzen Jigoku is a strong acid spring containing sulfur, which is said to have excellent antiseptic qualities and work particularly well for making the skin beautiful.
In the 1620s, the first lord of Shimabara Domain, suppressed Christianity and caught Christians were tortured and killed in Unzen-Jigoku. A monument to these martyrs has been erected here inside the Unzen Jigoku area.
Hell (地獄, Jigoku)
Jigoku in Japanese Buddhism is hell, a land of eternal punishment. Enma-O judges souls in the kingdom of the waiting dead. The lord of death is assisted by two disembodied heads. The female head has the power of perceiving the sinner's most secret faults, while the male head can detect any misdeed. Damnation is not eternal; those of middle note remain for a period awaiting reincarnation. The sentences can be shortened by the intervention of bodhisattvas (those destined to become enlightened) in response to the prayers of the living. Those of high note, become honoured ancestors, watching over their descendants.
A trip to Unzen, Nagasaki
This was a trip to Unzen, Nagasaki. It's a small hotspring (onsen) resort located high in the mountains of Nagasaki prefecture. Dr. Sato and Dr. Tamura put us up in a really nice room... it was a truly awesome weekend.

Here's an epic video with photo montages of our trip to Japan. We stopped at a lot of cities and towns, including: Hakone, Ashi Lake, Kyoto, Koyasan, Oita, Nagasaki, Unzen (Azumaen Hotel), and finally Tokyo (Shinagawa mostly).
I made a special effort to get video and images of all the great food we ate. The Buddhist temples were the most interesting and unique dining experiences. But I also really enjoyed the Chinese cuisine in Japan. It's much different than in America. Chinese food in Japan is several courses and served with excellent care and service.
What I'll miss the most about Japan is the politeness. The service in all towns and prefectures was outstanding. Too bad tipping is not part of Japanese custom. And too bad tipping IS part of American custom. Based on the two countries' track records, the tipping should be reverse.
