Thirty years after massive toxic contamination was discovered at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Marin
(20 May 2013) STORY
'Babyland': Camp Lejeune's toxic legacy?
CAPTION: Thirty years after massive toxic contamination was discovered at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Marines and their families want help and answers. A federal health report is due this spring, but some answers may already lie in 'Babyland.' (May 20)
DURATION: 1:58
AP TELEVISION
(nats)
(VOICE-OVER)
MARY BLAKELY WAS WALKING THIS LONELY SECTION OF ONSLOW MEMORIAL PARK WHEN SHE CAME ACROSS A TINY TIN PLAQUE.
IT READ SIMPLY - BABY GIRL WARD - BLAKELY HAD FOUND HERSELF IN BABYLAND.
SOUNDBITE (English): Mary Blakely, Marine's Daughter:
These are my peers. I'm a Marine Corps brat. And this could be me.
FROM THE 1950S UNTIL THE 1980S, BLAKELY AND OTHER RESIDENTS OF CAMP LEJEUNE, NORTH CAROLINA, DRANK AND BATHED IN WATER LACED WITH TOXIC CHEMICALS. CHEMICALS LINKED TO CHILDHOOD LEUKEMIA, BIRTH DEFECTS AND SEVERAL RARE FORMS OF CANCER.
SOUNDBITE (English): Dr. Richard Clapp, Epidemiologist, Boston Univ.:
More people were exposed, maybe up to a million people, some at incredibly high levels of toxic exposures, to chemicals such as trichloroethylene. So there's nothing else like that that I'm aware of in the history of this country.
The MARINE CORPS SAYS CLEANUP OF THE CONTAMINATED WELLS IS NEARLY COMPLETE, AND THE WATER IS TESTED MONTHLY.
SOUNDBITE (English): Bob Lowder, Environmental Quality:
It's probably the safest and most tested drinking water that they can find.
THE GOVERNMENT IS OFFERING HEALTH CARE TO VICTIMS. BUT MANY QUESTIONS REMAIN.
SOUNDBITE (English): Dr. Richard Clapp, Epidemiologist, Boston Univ.:
So it's been at least a two-decade long story, which is not complete, not finished yet.
AND NEITHER IS BLAKELY
SHE STARTED DIGGING AND CAME UP WITH TWENTY-FIVE HUNDRED DEATH CERTIFICATES, ALL BABIES WITH A CONNECTION TO THE BASE DURING THE THIRTY-YEAR PERIOD. SHE SHARED HER FINDINGS WITH FEDERAL HEALTH AUTHORITIES.
SOUNDBITE (English): Mary Blakely, Marine's Daughter:
Where are their markers? And who's told their parents that these children didn't die because of anything that they did? that they were poisoned?
BLAKELY HOPES A LONG-DELAYED REPORT ON BIRTH DEFECTS AND CHILDHOOD CANCERS AT LEJEUNE WILL HELP SHED LIGHT ON THE FULL SCOPE OF THE CONTAMINATION.
SHE HAS ALREADY GLIMPSED THE HEARTBREAKING TOLL IN BABYLAND.
