Six Goals for England and an Open Door Into the Next Round
NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia — It was Saturday afternoon on the Volga River when Panama’s coach, Hernan Dario Gomez, offered a scary thought — the next day’s World Cup match against England might prove even more lopsided than his team’s 3-0 loss to Belgium in its first game.
A day later, Panama made its manager look like a seer. Behind three goals from captain Harry Kane, England obliterated Panama, 6-1, on a steamy afternoon here, qualifying for the knockout round with a win that may have said more about how poor an opponent the Three Lions faced rather than how formidable they might actually be as this tournament rolls on.
And yet, there is not a lot more that anyone could have asked of England through its first two matches in Russia, a 2-1 win over Tunisia when the team was sharp everywhere except in front of the opposing goal and Sunday’s defenestration of Los Canaleros that will fill England with confidence as it confronts the World Cup crucible.
“I know how many people were watching at home on a Sunday afternoon,” England’s coach, Gareth Southgate, said when it was over. “Lovely that we could give them so many goals to enjoy.”
Maybe the most frightening thing for England fans, who have supposedly learned to lower their World Cup expectations after so many disappointments, is actually true. Maybe England is really, really good.
Gigantic 16 Storey Building Sinkhole Appears In Russia
Gigantic 16 Storey Building Sinkhole Appears In Russia
A massive sinkhole that appeared overnight in Russia has been labelled the 'gate to hell' by locals who are terrified that another could open up underneath their homes.
The vast hole, which is 105 ft wide and 165 ft deep, is large enough to swallow a 16 storey building.
It opened up seemingly overnight near to the village of Neledino in the Nizhny Novgorod region, which has just 111 residents.
Although no one was hurt, it is reported that children in the village are petrified by the thought of another hole opening up in the night and swallowing their homes while they sleep.
Meet Russia's Yakovlev -Yak 130, SUPERSONIC FIGHTER TRAINER , the Killer Light Combat Jet
Meet Russia's Yakovlev -Yak 130, SUPERSONIC FIGHTER TRAINER, the Killer Light Combat Jet
Developed in the immediate aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Yakovlev Yak 130 is one of the best-advanced trainer and light combat aircraft available on the international defense market.
The requirements for the aircraft were originally laid down during the late 1980s for a new trainer to replace the Soviet Air Force’s massive fleet of Czech-developed Aero L-29 Delfín and L-39 Albatros jet trainers. Five designs including the Sukhoi S-54, Myasishchev M-200, Mikoyan MiG-A T, and Yakovlev Yak-UTS were submitted. However, by the time of the final disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991, only the Mikoyan and Yakovlev designs remained under consideration.
In fact, while the Yakovlev design bureau had more or less completed the basic design of the Yak-130 by 1993, the funding situation forced the company to look for outside investment even though the Russian Air Force selected its jet for continued development. As such, Yakovlev entered into a partnership agreement to co-develop and market the Yak-130 with Italian airframer Aermacchi that same year. As development continued, the first Yak-130D test aircraft made its maiden flight from the Gromov airfield on April 25, 1996.
The partnership between the two eventually soured and by 2000, the Russians and Italians went their separate ways. The Italians paid the Russian company $77 million for technical documentation on the Yak-130 and went on to develop their version of the aircraft as the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master, which serves with a number of Western air forces. The Italian version of the plane might even go on to serve in the United States Air Force if it is selected as the winner of the T-X trainer competition
Yakovlev—now part of the Irkut Corporation—continued development of the Yak-130 for its domestic market and finally beat out the MiG-A T on April 16, 2002, when it was selected for the Russian Air Force’s trainer requirement. Development continued relatively quickly from that point. On April 30, 2004, Roman Taskaev— Yakovlev’s senior test pilot—flew the first production configured Yak-130, which was built at the Sokol plant in Nizhny Novgorod.
Production moved to Irkutsk in 2006 while flight-testing was completed by 2009. The jet formally entered service with the Russian Air Force in 2010 and has been exported since 2011 to various Russian client states. Russia currently has about 95 of the jets in service while Belarus has eight. Algeria and Bangladesh each have 16 aircraft while Myanmar has 12 aircraft, with six more on order. Syria has also ordered 26 Yak-130, but the status of those planes is unclear.
The Russian version of the Yak-130 has not done particularly well on the international market, but its Italian cousin the M346 is doing quite well having been adopted by Italy, Israel, Singapore, Poland and Turkmenistan. However, Leonardo—the manufacturer of the M346 aircraft—could win the contract for America’s T-X program. With the endorsement of the United States Air Force, the door would open for sales around the world.
As such, the basic design of the Yak-130 is sound and is a good performer that will likely capture more sales in both of its divergent variants. In terms of raw aerodynamic performance, the Yak-130 is not quite as spritely as its Italian derivative—owning mostly to the European jet’s superior Honeywell F124-GA-200 engines, lighter weight and somewhat slicker aerodynamics. However, the Yak-130 does offer excellent overall performance that does allow it replicate the performance of fourth and fifth-generation fighters for students.
Indeed, the Russian jet can maintain stable controlled flight at angles of attack of up to 35 degrees, which is similar to the capabilities of the jets such as the MiG-29, Su-30 and even Western types such as the F A-18E, F Super Hornet. It also has an excellent thrust to weight ratio of 0.8, which allows the jet to sustain high g-forces, rate-of-climb and affords good take take-off performance.
Because its flight performance is close enough to a jet fighters’, both the Italian and Russian versions of the jet have been adapted as light strike fighter aircraft for the lower end of the market. The Yak-130 has nine hard points on which it can carry a maximum of 6,600 pounds of weapons including KAB-500 precision guided bombs and R-73E high off boresight dog fighting missiles.
Thus, the Yak-130 and its M346 cousin likely have a bright future.

Moscow 'Ramadan Tent' celebrates Tatars of Finland
(7 Jun 2017) LEADIN
Around 1,500 people have gathered in a Moscow 'Ramadan Tent' to celebrate the Tatars of Finland.
The tent is in its 12th year and hosts a different Islamic community, from in and around Russia, every day of Ramadan.
STORYLINE
Next to the Moscow Memorial Mosque at Poklonnaya Gora sits a large white tent.
The 'Ramadan Tent' as it's known has popped up here every year for the last 12 years during Islam's holy month. It's been so successful it's sparked more of its kind in other Russian cities.
The people queuing have been fasting all day but are here to break the fast together at the daily Iftar at sunset.
Every day the tent focuses on a different Islamic community within Russia, around the Commonwealth of Independent States and also predominantly Muslim nations such as Turkey and Iran.
Today they are honouring the Tatars of Finland, the oldest Muslim minority group in Finland, who moved there over 100 years ago.
Welcome to our Finnish Tatar, brethren who left for Finland more than a hundred years ago, says Damir Muhetdinov, Deputy Chairman of Muslim Spiritual Guidance of Russia.
Explaining their success in integrating while maintaining their identity he adds: I want to underline an important fact. So as not to completely assimilate and dissolve in Finnish society but to integrate in a healthy way, they first and foremost created the Muslim Tatar society of Finland.
The Tatars of Finland have preserved their culture over the generations since slowly migrating there over the course of the 19th and early 20th centuries, when Finland was within the Russian Empire.
The Russian Revolution and subsequent civil war saw the last wave of Tatars migrate to Finland, mainly from the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia.
Though they were originally grouped in small villages, the Tatar community found itself within major Finnish cities such as Helsinki and Tampere over time.
Ravin Bagautdinov, a volunteer in the tent's organising committee, describes the Tatars of Finland as: A good example for many Muslims in how such a small Muslim society has preserved its roots, its religion, this far away from its original homeland.
The tent has a 1,500 people capacity and today that limit as been reached, due to the popularity of these events.
Moscow's Muslims as well as friends and visitors of non-Muslim backgrounds and delegates of the cultures being explored all visit the Ramadan Tent.
One Charity Administrator at the Ramadan Tent describes it as: A unifying factor, a platform which brings together people of Muslim and non-Muslim backgrounds.
