Porto’s Taberna Santo António: My Kind of Restaurant
I spend nearly every evening in Europe hunting...hunting for places like Porto’s Taberna Santo António. This impromptu clip gives a sense of the neighborhood energy of a great little eatery, with a local friend giving me what we agreed is a little bit of “heaven on a spoon.”
Looking for great new restaurants to recommend in the next edition of one of my guidebooks is also a lot like fishing: Sometimes you go home empty-handed, and sometimes you score. In Porto, I was a happy guidebook writer, having found several great new restaurants — some characteristic and rough like this one, others more romantic and elegant.
Here’s the write-up for the Rick Steves Portugal guidebook —
[$$] Taberna Santo António is a convivial, hole-in-the-wall place — the quintessence of a family-run, neighborhood favorite. There’s a tight dining room and a few prime seats at the bar where eaters are choosing from six traditional stews, marveling at the homemade desserts, and having fun with the waitstaff (Rua das Virtudes 32, tel. 222-055-306).
Porto Trip 2018
I had bug bites on my face, lost, i was still vegetarian but it was a lot of fun. I had a slight crush on the receptionist of my Hostel haha. The people who appears in my photos are people I met during my stay, Cristian and Mahora ❤️
Street Race Track in Porto, Portugal
June 2011.
Rising above the river Douro, Porto is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The city was declared a UNESCO heritage in 1996.
It also has a really beautiful street race track Circuito-da-Boavista, right by the ocean, in Porto. It's been used in the past for the FIA Formula 1 World Championship, although these events took place in 1958 and 1960, a long time ago! As a street track it didn't get used for a long time, until in 2005 they revived the track. It's since been used for the World Touring Car Championship.
Track Length: 4.8KM (2.98 Miles)
Corners: 12
Direction: Anti Clockwise

Do You Know the 7 Places in PORTO That Inspired HARRY POTTER?
Check out the 7 places in Porto, Portugal, that inspired J.K. Rowling while writing the Harry Potter Books! How many of these did you know, Potterhead?
VO:
Hey guys and welcome back to another episode of Triple P with me Surya Sridhar. So as some of you may know Im a Potterhead and that basically means I love Harry Potter. I grew up with it! I read all the books, I watched all the movies, had Harry Potter board games at home and recently I went to London to check out the Harry Potter shop and of course Platform 9 and 3/4. So guys there is only one thing left for me to do. To go to Porto! And you might ask: Why Porto? What’s here? Now as some of you Potter Heads may know, JK Rowling lived in Porto for 2-3 years teaching English, and thats where she wrote the first draft of the Philosophers Stone. She of course got a lot of inspiration from the city, and we’re going to be checking out 7 of the places. So are you guys ready? Cause I am. Let’s go!
Number 1: Livraria Lello
The Livraria Lello is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. You’ll be stunned by the woodwork, the glass art, and its most important feature: the red winding staircase. Many Potterheads believe that it actually inspired the incredible Hogwarts moving staircases as well as the interior decorations of the Diagon Alley premium bookstore called: Flourish and Blotts. You’ll be shocked to know that I stood in a queue for over 45 minutes and paid 3 Euros to get into this bookstore, but trust me, it was worth it!
Number 2: Escovaria de Belomonte
In Harry Potter, do you remember the scene where he's walking through Diagon Alley ogling at the beautiful Nimbus 2000? These magical brooms and the ones at the Brushes of Belomonte have a striking resemblance, especially since they are made by hand, are of high quality woods and natural fibres and have a rustic look to them. Also you may have noticed the similarities in the font used on the stores sign to the one used in the Harry Potter branding! Cool eh?
Number 3: Universidade do Porto
Now guys you remember the outfit at Hogwarts don't you? Incase you forgot, you can just head on over to the University of Porto to check it out. Yup you heard me right. The students also have a similar outfit: a white button down shirt, a tie, a sweater, dark trousers or skirts and of course a full length cape! If the Hogwarts Express came chugging by, they would just need to jump on, and they’d blend right in!
Number 4: Cafe Majestic
Now legend has it that JK Rowling frequently visited Cafe Majestic on Rua de Santa Catarina, which isn't surprising as it was a popular place for intellectuals and literary giants. It is said that she would jot down notes on the napkins when she got an inspiration for her first book Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. I was so struck by the stunning Art Nouveau design of the place, that I decided to treat myself to a yummy French Toast and soak in the ambience.
Number 5: Fonte dos Leões
Theres no doubt that Gryffindor has a special place in our hearts, especially since the main characters are from this house. It is speculated that the Fountain of Lions in Porto inspired JK Rowling to think of this beautiful emblem that symbolises courage and bravery. The interesting thing is that the lions aren't just normal ones - they have majestic wings - resembling the mythical griffin, hence: Gryffindor.
Number 6: Torre dos Clerigos
No doubt that one of the most emotional moments in Harry Potter was the death of Albus Dumbledore, the beloved headmaster. The scene shows him falling from the Astronomy Tower, the highest point in Hogwarts. It is said that this was inspired by the 76 meter high Clerigos Tower which for a long time was the highest building in all of Portugal. After climbing its 240 stone spiral staircases, I finally made it to the top to check out the breath taking panoramic scenery. Seriously, it really did remind me of the Astronomy Tower in Hogwarts!
Number 7: António de Oliveira Salazar
Now some of you may not know this but Antonio de Oliveira Salazar was the prime minister of Portugal from 1932 to 1968 and was known to be a dictator with a strong sense of censorship. It is very much possible that it inspired the antagonistic Slytherin house and its founding father: Salazar Slytherin, who was a Parselmouth and one who believed in blood purity. What do you guys think?
Alright Potterheads that takes us to the end of the video. I really hope you enjoyed this magical journey through Porto and that you'll be making your way here very soon. Do hit the like and subscribe buttons and of course the bell icon to stay notified for more of my travel videos coming up. See you guys next time!

Casa da Música (Porto-Portugal)
Rem Koolhaas
Casa da Música is a major concert hall space in Porto, Portugal. It was designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, and was built as part of Porto's project for European Culture Capital in 2001 but was only finished in the first half of 2005 and immediately became an icon in the city. The Building engineers were Ove Arup - London together with Afassociados, Oporto.
Although the opening day concert took place on the April 14 with Clã and Lou Reed, the building was inaugurated on April 15, 2005 by the Portuguese president. The Prime-minister and many other notable politicians and Porto society were present for the concert by the Orquestra Nacional do Porto.
Casa da Música was built just across from one of the main traffic and business centers of the city, Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque , known as Rotunda da Boavista. The place where the building now sits used to be a holding place for the electric cars that ran in Porto. Although construction ran over four years over schedule and cost roughly €100M, the building process brought new engineering challenges in order to create its unusual configuration.
The building's design has been highly acclaimed worldwide. Nicolai Ouroussoff, architecture critic from the New York Times, classified it as the most attractive project the architect Rem Koolhaas has ever built and saying it's a building whose intellectual ardor is matched by its sensual beauty. He also compares it to the exuberant design in Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Only looking into the original aspect of the building, this is one of the most important concert halls built in the last 100 years. He compares it to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, in Los Angeles, and the Berliner Philharmonie.
Casa da Música has two main auditoriums, though many other areas of the building can very easily be adapted for concerts and other musical activity (workshops, educational activities, etc.).
The large auditorium has an initial capacity of 1,238 people, but can vary according to the occasion.
The small auditorium is tremendously flexible, and has no definite number in relation to the capacity. On average the room has capacity for 300 people sitting down, and 650 people standing, though these can drastically change depending on the size of the stage, its location, the arrangement of the chairs, the presence and size of sound and recording equipment, etc.
The restaurant at the top of the building was opened far later than was originally planned. Functioning since August 2006, the restaurant's original planned capacity for 250 people was decreased to space for some 150.

Top 9 Travel Destinations — Portugal
Top 9 Destinations — Portugal
Portugal has emerged from the long shadow cast by neighbouring Spain, seizing the spotlight as a dynamic centre for art, culture and cuisine. A spate of artfully
designed museums have opened in the past two years, there’s now a celebrated microbrewery scene, and rock-star Portuguese chefs are creating culinary buzz from Lisbon
to the glittering beaches of the Algarve (seven new restaurants received Michelin stars in 2017). Heightening Portugal’s appeal are its incredible affordability and
its natural wonders: in 2016, more than 300 beaches earned the coveted Blue Flag rating and two new biosphere reserves were named. It’s no surprise everyone is talking
about this small, seafaring nation.
1. Lisbon
The museums of Lisbon celebrate the rich history and culture of this Portuguese capital city. The Maritime Museum is perfect for kids (and grown-ups!) who adore all
things nautical, while the Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves is a hidden gem of colorful artwork. .
2. Madeira Islands
Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful
collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre.
3. Albufeira-portugal
There are lots of beach types, and with 20 very different beaches to choose from, Albufeira delights them all.
4. Porto-portugal
The town that gave the country (and port wine) its very name, Porto is Portugal’s second-largest metropolis after Lisbon.
5.Portimao-portugal
Portimao is a sailor’s delight, thanks to its calm waters and beautiful conditions. Plenty of elite international competitions happen here, but you don’t have to be a
professional to set sail.
6. Lagos
There is rich and beautiful history within Lagos’ 14th century walls, from its fortress to picturesque churches like Medieval São João Hermitage and the 17th-century
São Sebastião. But that’s all appetizer.
7. cascais-portugal
A coastal town just 20 miles west of Lisbon, Cascais was once a small fishing village, but its idyllic scenery attracted the attention of artists, writers and expelled
European nobility in the 20th century.
8. Sintra-Portugal
Long the home of Portugal’s monarchs, Sintra is a magnificent town of marvelous historic mansions, all set against the backdrop of lush hills. Sintra’s many castles
include the Palácio Nacional de Sintra (a main abode of Portuguese royalty until the early 20th century), the hilltop and storybook Palácio da Pena, Quinta de
Regaleira (incorporating several architectural styles and with gorgeous surrounding gardens), the Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle), and the Palácio de Monserrate.
9. Evora
Time seems to stand still in Evora, a well-preserved medieval town that features protective walls, a 13th-century cathedral, several palaces, and a 1st-century Roman
temple. No surprise that the town center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
