Orchid Isle to Suva
From the Global Village Travel Guide and DVD, Islands of the South Pacific. Stock footage available from
Transcript:
Beyond Kula Bird Park at Orchid Island Cultural Center,
the old world of Fiji comes alive with re-creations of village homes,
and various artifacts from daily life.
This graceful tall-roofed temple is a spirit house --
off-limits to all but the chief of the village
In the park's zoo some animals unique to the Pacific
region can be viewed -- and even handled.
One of the main attractions here is the
rare Crested Iguana,
a species that was only discovered in 1970
Just beyond Orchid Island, the Queen's Road leads to Suva,
the largest city in the tropical South Pacific.
Suva, the capital and administrative center of Fiji,
has been important to commerce since the early 1800s.
These handsome buildings and broad avenues are vestiges of Fiji's
role as a British Crown Colony. They provide
a stately Victorian backdrop to
the hustle and bustle of Suva's central trade district.
