Vietnam Vlog: Hanoi & Ha Long Bay - Asia Trip
Continuing with the Asia vlogs, after Hong Kong we visited Vietnam for the first time.
Visiting Ha Long Bay in particular was pretty interesting and surreal, but I also got rained on more than I ever had before.
Still, it was an interesting location and we were both really shocked by the sheer amount of motorcycles in the country.
I hope you enjoy this video, and the final few coming soon.

Crossing the Chinese Border into Vietnam
Sometimes crossing a border isn't as easy as you think.
My new friend James and I faced a lot of confusion at the border crossing into Vietnam from China. We saw our bus group skip the immigration line, so we followed them through without getting our passports stamped.
To this day, I don't know how they got through but we didn't.

My name is Chris Burns and I have a passion for two things. Telling stories and travelling to new places. I grew up immersing myself in stories by reading books and watching movies. Anytime I could, I would transcend reality by immersing myself into a new story. Then, at the age of 16, I traveled to Timbuktu in Mali, Africa. Suddenly, reality didn’t need transcending. I was there. Experiencing a new world in reality…not just my imagination.

Hoan Kiem Lake - 2020 | Hanoi Vietnam 2020 | Things to do in Hanoi Vietnam
Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi attracts tourists and locals looking to get away from the noise and frenetic pace of the city. Peaceful and quiet, the lake surrounds Ngoc Son Temple, a pagoda sitting in the centre on a small island.
The temple attracts many visitors and was built in commemoration of the 13th century military leader Tran Hung Dao who was renowned for his bravery in the battle against the Yuan Dynasty.
Homage is also paid to scholar Van Xuong and Confucian master Nguyen Van Sieu. The island on which the temple is built is known as Jade Island and is accessible by the iconic Huc Bridge or Rising Sun Bridge which is a charming scarlet-painted wooden bridge of classical Vietnamese design. The pagoda is also guarded by two towering posts decorated with Chinese writing. The lake and temple are probably the most famous places in Hanoi city in which to rest and enjoy the view and are a great place to sit back and watch the locals.

NANNING-HANOI by rail! Easiest rail border crossing ever, or were online reports correct?
This overnight rail journey was the crossing I was most worried about, having read some scary reports online. After one last look around Nanning, I boarded the Chinese train across the China-Vietnam border to Hanoi. I end up at a very quiet station 5km from the city centre.

Overnight Cruise in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Today we sleepover at one of Vietnam's hottest destinations: Ha Long Bay. We take the overnight cruise and sail through its limestone islands. During the day our activities include kayaking, visiting the Thien Cung Cave, rowing by floating houses, and Vietnamese cooking lessons. In the evening we wine and dine, then go squid-fishing. No catch, but it's a way to mingle with other passengers! Watch the video to see the action unfold :)

Capital of Vietnam
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is known for its centuries-old architecture and a rich culture with Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. At its heart is the chaotic Old Quarter, where the narrow streets are roughly arranged by trade.
There are many little temples, including Bach Ma, honoring a legendary horse, plus Đồng Xuân Market, selling household goods and street food.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF HANOI, Vietnam. Just off the train from China, I witness the traffic and noise
Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. So close to the Chinese border, but so different. My first impression was that the city was one of chaos, but it works, and the people are lovely. The video starts with me just off the train from China.

Touristic Center of Hanoi by Day and Night - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
The tourist center of Hanoi includes the old town and the area around the Hoan Kiem Lake. The old neighborhoods, that have largely withstood the colonisation of France and the bombing of the Americans during the Vietnam war, house a huge number of small businesses, hotels, restaurants and bars. The lively traffic makes the narrow streets almost impassable.
Nevertheless, you will find everything you need in this area. Some of the roads are organized by product group. For example, in the Pho Hang Dau you can buy almost exclusively shoes.
The Hoan Kiem Lake is the most famous lake in the heart of Hanoi. It lies between the Old Town and the former French colonial quarter. In the past it was connected to the red river and served as retention basin. Today, many channels and the connection to the Red River are filled.
Along the lakeside you find recreation areas.
The Hoan Kiem Lake was the habitat of the favorite animal of the Vietnamese people, the giant tortoise Cu Rùa. It passed away on January 21, 2016 at the age of 120 years.
Landmark of Hanoi is the Turtle Tower (Thap Rua) on a small island in the lake.
The lake and the Turtle Tower are connected to a legend. Once, a turtle appeared to the poor fisherman Le Loi and gave him a magical sword with which he could free Vietnam from the Chinese and crown himself king. As the turtle wanted to have the sword back, it was transformed into a dragon and plunged into the lake. To commemorate these events, Le Loi let build the tower.
During our evening walk through the Le Thai To, we discover the temple with the same name, which is also connected to the legend of the sword.
On another island is the Ngoc Son Temple, the Temple of the Jade Mountain. It is the most visited temple of Hanoi and dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao, who expelled the Mongols in the 13th century. The island is connected with the mainland via the picturesque Huc Bridge, Cầu Thê Húc.
The large square with the illuminated fountain, on the northern shore of the lake, serves as a meeting place of the youth.
A number of excellent restaurants can be found along the promenade.

Dennoch findet man in diesem Viertel alles was man benötigt.

China 2014, Vietnam trip 1st day
While in China to celebrate Chinese New Year and visit family, we embark on a trip that will eventually take us to Ha Long Bay, then later Hanoi Vietnam. This video has some clips and stills from the 1st of a 4 day trip.
We first have to pass through a city named Dongxing on the Chinese side, clear customs and immigration, getting visas in the process. The we proceed through across the bridge (over a river) to Mong Cai Vietnam. We later travel further along the coast for a bit of sightseeing.
