Japan Before Dawn - Moments in Time Ep 7
This is our biggest episode yet as I explore and photograph some of my favorite locations in Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka during a beautiful sakura season beginning with the seemingly infinite rows of vermilion torii gates in the Fushimi Inari Shrine. A very early morning ensures I have the entire shrine all to myself as the lanterns light the beautiful paths.
Next, I connect with my friend and local tour guide Yumi and we take a train together to Nara to explore some of Japan’s most important cultural and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Todai-ji temple. But Nara isn’t just known for the ancient architecture, it’s also famous for the thousands of nearly domesticated local deer that have become a tourist attraction themselves.
After another very early morning photographing the famous Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, we quickly learn just how busy this location becomes when mainstream tourists arrive. Thankfully arriving super early ensures that I’m able to get the shot, and before heading to Osaka, I share about every piece of gear that’s in my camera bag.
In Osaka, I meet up with local landscape photographer Hideaki Sumi and we photograph a great spot at Osaka Castle where the Cherry Blossoms surround and frame the castle. We stay through a beautiful sunset and blue hour until we are able to get the perfect shot with the best light.
In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Join our Moments in Time Flickr community for some exclusive content being released next week or tune back in on Tuesday, August 13th for a new episode from the tulip fields of the Netherlands, as we begin the European portion of this adventure.

AMAZING Takoyaki Skills - Street food in Japan
From Wikipedia: Travel Yum Yum
Takoyaki (たこ焼き or 蛸焼?) is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special moulded pan. It is typically filled with minced or diced octopus (tako), tempura scraps (tenkasu), pickled ginger, and green onion.[1][2] Takoyaki are brushed with takoyaki sauce (similar to Worcestershire sauce) and mayonnaise, and then sprinkled with green laver (aonori) and shavings of dried bonito. There are many variations to the takoyaki recipe, for example, ponzu (soy sauce with dashi and citrus vinegar), goma-dare (sesame-and-vinegar sauce) or vinegared dashi.
Takoyaki was first popularized in Osaka,[3] where a street vendor named Tomekichi Endo is credited with its invention in 1935. Takoyaki was inspired by akashiyaki, a small round dumpling from the city of Akashi in Hyōgo Prefecture made of an egg-rich batter and octopus.[4] Takoyaki was initially popular in the Kansai region, and later spread to the Kantō region and other areas of Japan. Takoyaki is associated with yatai street food stalls, and there are many well-established takoyaki specialty restaurants, particularly in the Kansai region. Takoyaki is now sold at commercial outlets, such as supermarkets and 24-hour convenience stores.
Yaki is derived from yaku (焼く?) which is one of the cooking methods in Japanese cuisine, meaning to fry or grill, and can be found in the names of other Japanese cuisine items such as teppanyaki, yakitori, teriyaki, okonomiyaki and sukiyaki.[5]
Dōtonbori or Dōtombori (道頓堀?, pronounced [doːtomboɽi]) is one of the principal tourist destinations in Osaka, Japan, running along the Dōtonbori canal from Dōtonboribashi Bridge to Nipponbashi Bridge in the Namba district of the city's Chuo ward. Historically a theater district, it is now a popular nightlife and entertainment area characterized by its eccentric atmosphere and large illuminated signboards. One of the area's most prominent features, a billboard for confectionery company Glico displaying the image of a runner crossing a finishing line, is seen as an icon of Osaka within Japan.Dōtonbori traces its history back to 1612, when a local entrepreneur, Yasui Dōton, began expanding the tiny Umezu River, which ran east to west, hoping to increase commerce in the region by connecting the two branches of the Yokobori River, which ran north to south, with a canal. Dōton’s project was interrupted when he died defending Toyotomi Hideyori in the ill-fated Siege of Osaka, but his cousins finished the canal in 1615. The new lord of Osaka Castle, Tadaki Matsudaira, named the canal and avenue beside it Dōtonbori (bori from hori, meaning canal), even though Doton had been on the losing side during the siege.
The character of Dōtonbori became defined in 1621 when the Tokugawa Shogunate instituted urban planning, designating Dōtonbori as the entertainment district of Osaka. By 1662 the avenue boasted six Kabuki theatres and five Bunraku theatres, as well as the unique Takeda Karakuri mechanical puppet theatre. Many restaurants and cafes were built to cater to the flood of tourists and entertainment-seekers pouring nightly into Dōtonbori.
Over the years, declining interest in traditional forms of entertainment led to the closing of most of Dōtonbori's original attractions. Its five remaining theatres were bombed and destroyed during World War II.
Osaka is a major destination for tourists, both domestic and international. The Dotonbori district is a popular area for visitors to the city and boasts a number of well known restaurants offering a range of traditional and modern Japanese dishes.
Kuidaore (食い倒れ?) is a Japanese word meaning roughly “to ruin oneself by extravagance in food.” It is sometimes romanised as cuidaore, and is part of a larger proverb: Dress (in kimonos) till you drop in Kyoto, eat till you drop in Osaka (京の着倒れ、大阪の食い倒れ).
Glico Man: Originally installed in 1935, the sign depicting a giant athlete on a blue track is a symbol of Glico candy. The sign has been altered on several occasions to celebrate events such as the World Cup and to show support for the Osaka baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers. The current version is the sixth, which uses LEDs. The previous five incarnations of the sign used neon lights.[4]
Kuidaore Taro: In front of Cui-daore is a mechanical drum-playing clown, also known as the Kuidaore Ningyo, installed in 1950. Every March the visiting rikishi for the Osaka Grand Sumo tournament used to line up with Kuidaore Taro for photos. Now that the restaurant has closed, Kuidaore Taro has been moved to a new location slightly east of his old haunt.
Kani Dōraku crab: This six and a half meter crab is on the front of the crab restaurant Kani Dōraku. It is mechanised, being able to move its arms and eyestalks. Built in 1960, this mechanical billboard soon spawned imitations, including a squid that puffs steam and oni (demons) that light up at night.

Locals comment ahead of Trump's Asia trip
(4 Nov 2017) US President Donald Trump embarks on his first official visit to Asia this weekend, with his first stopover in Japan.
The 10-day trip will also take him to South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Though he is expected to receive a warm welcome from fellow leaders, Trump is likely to face a mixed reception from some of the people in those countries.
Many Chinese view the US President in a favourable light, especially those working in technology fields.
Ding Chenling, a technology investor and well-known tech blogger with 700-thousand followers on China's microblogging website Weibo, believes many Chinese like Trump because he casts aside political correctness and like the Beijing leadership, does not like to be lectured by the teacher.
Residents in Japan AP spoke to were more cautious.
Yoh Kawakami, an employee at an information management solution company said he was concerned about Trump's handling of the North Korean nuclear issue.
While Yuma Katsuyama who works for an non profit organisation thinks it may be a good thing that Trump became US President despite her initial reservations.
In the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, Bach Ngoc Lien, a development expert stated that Trump was a controversial character in her view, with his negative comments on migrants and views on climate change.
She believes Trump needs to make the US friendly again like it used to be.
In the Philippines, residents in Manila said they were keen for good relations to be maintained between the US administration under Trump and their President Rodrigo Duterte.
While in the South Korean capital Seoul supporters and critics of the US President are already out on the streets.
Trump appears to divide opinion there, with a fear of war with North Korea ever present.
Seoul agreed to install the US-owned Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) missile defence platform on its land in July, in a move that has concerned many South Koreans.
Company worker Ock Hyun-woong told AP he was happy South Korea had the capability to defend itself but hoped President Trump resolves the Korean Peninsula issues through peace talks.

I always like a bit of history with my entertainment. You see here Hideyoshi and some of his main retainers including his Seven Spears. Most interesting, we get a good look at Ishida Mitsunari (characterized here as a bad battle commander). He eventually led the losing Hideyori side at the battle Of Sekigahara. All but one of the Seven Spears betrayed him in that battle.
