Osaka Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to Osaka
Things YOU need to know before you travel to Osaka Japan. Osaka is the third most populated city in Japan with 2.7M in the city and 19 Million in the region. Osaka is often overlooked for Tokyo and Kyoto, but Osaka has its own charm that makes it a wonderful destination for visitors. Osaka is a welcoming, exciting, and place that should really be on your travel radar!
Osaka is located on the main island of Honshu, roughly in the center of Japan. Osaka is a great place to base yourself when visiting Japan. In the centre of the Kansai region, landing at it’s international airport will place you within an hours local train journey to Kyoto, Nara and Kobe. Osaka is worth worth 3-5 days.
2- Food
Osaka is famous in Japan for their food. Its nickname is “the nation’s kitchen”.
Most well known: okonomiyaki, which is a dish made with meat, seafood, and noodles.
Takoyaki, delicious fried octopus balls that are sure to curve your hunger cravings at night.
Kushikatsu. Kushi refers to the bamboo skewers that the food is on and you can find meat, vegetable and even cheese varieties here. Don’t forget to dip your fried goods into the tonkatsu sauce (but strictly NO double dipping)
And of course Ramen!
Osaka is home to 200+ Michelin starred restaurants and Dontoburi is the epicentre of that.
Aside from the delicious food, Osaka is also well known for its high quality Sake, or Japanese rice wine. The sake is made from fresh water that comes from the Osaka mountains
3-Kita (Umeda) North District
One of 2 major districts in Osaka
Newly rebuilt JR Osaka station is the heart
Business and lots of Hotels
Grand Front Osaka is amazing
YenTenjimbashi-suji Shopping Street
This 2.6km covered shopping arcade is the longest in Osaka
Umeda Sky Building is one of the tallest and most impressive buildings in Osaka. It’s more like two buildings connected by a bridge at the top. There’s a great observation deck at the top called the Kuchu Teien (“Garden in the Sky”) Observatory.
HEP 5 Ferris Wheel - 500
4- Minami (Namba) South District
Osaka’s 2nd downtown
Neon lights, crazy signs
Japan's version of Times Square
Shinsaibashi and Namba
Dotombori Arcade runs parallel to the canal on the south side and it’s lined with some of Osaka’s most famous and largest restaurants, which compete for business with huge signs and giant mechanical crabs etc.
Midosuji (shopping street)
Osaka’s “main street,” Midosuji is a broad street All the major international luxury brands have outlets here
Hozenji Yokocho (traditional alley)
Two small blocks east of Midosuji and two small blocks south of the Dotombori Arcade, you’ll find one of the most beautiful streets in all of Osaka and it looks like it was magically transported from somewhere in Kyoto. Entering this street is like slipping 200 years back in time.
Doguyasuji Arcade (kitchen and cooking supply shopping arcade)
About five minutes’ walk southeast of Namba subway station (easily reached on foot from Dotombori
Amerika Mura (trendy district)
Amerika Mura (or “Amemura” to the locals)
5- Otaku Paradise
Den Den Town. Osaka’s answer to Akihabara and not far from Namba station, here you’ll find all the weird and wonderful Japanese toys and manga you’ve heard about on the internet. Watch your step or you could unintentionally fall into adult-only territory. (Or intentionally, if that’s what you’re after.)
Den-Den is the city’s electronics, camera, computer and pop culture shopping neighborhood. It’s about 10 minutes’ walk southwest of Namba Station, in Nippombashi, running roughly between Nippombashi and Ebisucho stations on the Sakaisuji subway line. Many of the shops here have someone on hand who can speak English, so don’t be afraid to ask for help when looking for something.

TIPS/ADVICES
›››We would recommend staying at an accommodation around Namba or DenDen Town. Both are central to where all the fun touristy things are! We stayed in DenDen Town and mostly everything was walking distance away.
›››Purchase an Osaka amazing pass! This pass is a definite bang for your buck and really allows you to see what the city of Osaka has to offer. This pass allows you free access to many attractions, discounts for certain things and unlimited access to the subway!!! It was amazing!
›››Arrive to attractions EARLY in the morning. A lot of attractions can get over-crowded during prime time. Jim and I woke up early everyday and really enjoyed the quiet, peacefulness of the attractions we visited. For example, Osaka Castle and Shitennoji can get really crowded.
FAQ's ›››
›››Q: Could you also please give me a list of where to eat in Osaka?
›››A: we highly recommend exploring the dotonbori area and let your nose do the guiding. Ichiran ramen is a must visit for sure but be sure to visit around 11-3pm as we found that there was not a very long wait at that time. We also found the Pablo Cafe right by the Glico Running Man sign was very delicious! We highly recommend the original flavor cheese tarts. Lesli is a huge fan of their soft serve ice cream for their unique light cheese flavored ice cream. Last recommendation is in the restaurant area in the basement of umeda station called Shabu Sai. It is an all you can eat for a very affordable price (2900yen). The beef was very soft and tender and they have an excellent selection of vegetables.

Osaka Travel Guide: Beautiful Osaka Night View
Osaka (Ōsaka-shi, Osaka City) is a city in the Kansai region, Japan. Osaka is the third most populous city in Japan after Tokyo and Yokohama. It is located on the island of Honshu, at the mouth of the Yodo River on the Osaka Bay. Osaka is a water metropolis known for its rivers and the largest number of bridges in Japan. There are two city centers in Osaka, namely Umeda in the north, and Namba in the south. These two city centers are connected by the main road called Midosuji.
Osaka is famous for its Kuidaore culture (eating as much as you like) that is eating and eating continuously until it doesn't eat anymore and falls on its back. Osaka typical food is okonomiyaki (fried egg filled with sliced cabbage with pork or seafood topping), takoyaki, and kushikatsu (stab vegetables or meat wrapped in bread flour and then fried). Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki, and Udon (flour from noodles) are examples of the culture of konamono (food from wheat flour) favored by Osaka people. Awa-okoshi (sweet rice straw) and konbu (dried seaweed) are typical souvenirs of Osaka. For Osaka people and also for people living in western Japan, the word meat (niku) without explaining its type means beef. In Osaka, if not stated before, generally sukiyaki means beef sukiyaki.
Osaka also has a variety of tourist destinations, including:
1. Osaka Castle: Parks and rivers that surround Osaka Castle are places to enjoy cherry blossoms (hanami) in the spring.
2. Namba and Shinsaibashi; The Namba and Shinsaibashi regions are the most crowded with shops and restaurants visited by tourists on weekends and holidays.
3. Kaiyukan Aquarium in Tempozan: In the giant aquarium, whale sharks are kept. The aquarium has a collection of around 580 species of marine animals in the Asia Pacific region.
4. Universal Studios Japan (USJ): A large playground in Osaka that is always full of visitors on weekends and holiday time for school children.
5. Umeda: In Umeda, there is a network of the largest underground shops in Japan that connect the large shopping centers of Hankyu, Hanshin, and Daimaru.
6. Tenjinbashi Shopping Center
7. This tower is a symbol of Osaka as well as the pride of the people of Osaka in ancient times. Around the tower can be seen a view of the old city corner that has almost never changed since decades ago.

The Kita, meaning North district, also known as Umeda, is one of Osaka's two major city centers. It is a area surrounding the large station complex that consists of Osaka and Umeda Stations. On the other hand, Minami meaning South, Kita's counterpart, is located around Namba Station. Besides being Osaka's busiest transportation hub and a bustling business district, what makes Kita area much more attractive is its abundance of shopping, restaurants, lodging and entertainment, including several department stores and an expansive network of underground shopping malls.
The Umeda district has been going through a major facelift over the past years, and more improvements are planned to happen. JR Osaka Station was recently transformed from one of Japan's darkest and most cramped station into one of the country's most pleasant. Furthermore, the expansive freight rail yard in the north of the station is under redevelopment into a new, modern city district. As a first part of the huge redevelopment project, the Grand Front Osaka complex was recently opened.
Umeda Sky Building - Osaka - Letters from Japan
The Umeda Sky Building is located in North Osaka and is one of Osaka’s most well-known landmarks.
Getting there can be confusing. The easiest and most direct route is to first arrive at Osaka Station (JR Train) or Umeda Station (local Subway). Exit out of any north exit that leads to the Grand Front Shopping complex.
There is an underground walkway that leads straight to the Sky Building. Look for this walkway between the first two Grand Front buildings. (Watch the video for the walkway's specific location.)

Osaka, City of Neon Nightscapes | Travel With My Dear |
This is my first time traveling Japan without my dear :'(... Which made solo filming and exploring at the same time quite challenging/akward at times ;D... But in the end, it was an amazing experience travelling.
As my journey began in Dotonbori I immediately felt like I was transported into the future. 3D Signboards and neon lights everywhere, reflecting beautifully into the rainy streets. I headed out into Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade. This area is unique for its trendy boutiques and specialty shops as well as chain retail stores. Visiting the Kuromon market was especially good for my stomache. The next day I took a train to Koyasan, which is high up in the mountains, to a secluded temple town hidden between jade green nature. So, so quaint and beautiful and I absolutely loved it. The temples are a gorgeous selection of brightly painted and modestly plain. From Koyasan I traveled to Ikeda, which is one of the popular suburbs in Osaka. Ikeda has many things to offer from its beautiful Satsukiyama (Mt Satsuki), many significant temples and shrines in Japanese history to the birthplace of instant ramen noodle!

UMEDA SKY BUILDING | LONGEST ESCALATOR IN OSAKA | TRAVEL VLOG
Hello angels, I'm Myles, welcome to my channel.
Umeda Sky Building is the nineteenth-tallest building in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, and one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. It consists of two 40-story towers that connect at their two uppermost stories, with bridges and an escalator crossing the wide atrium-like space in the center.
Takimi-Koji is a replica of a small street from 1920s Osaka, reconstructed at the basement floor of the Umeda Sky Building. It features restaurants, small shops and even a small Inari shrine, creating a romantic atmosphere suggesting the early Shōwa period.
