Oscar Peterson Commemoration at Canada's National Arts Centre
Oscar Peterson (1925-2007) has been described as one of the greatest piano players of all time; his mark on the jazz world unmistakable.
In commemoration of this Canadian artist's profound impact, the Oscar Peterson National Committee has commissioned Canadian artist Ruth Abernethy to create a commemorative statue in the heart of the country, at Canada's National Arts Centre.
That statue was unveiled amid great celebration on June 30, 2010 by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. More than 10,000 people lined Elgin and Albert Streets to participate in the unveiling. Montreal musician and broadcaster, Gregory Charles hosted the event, Trevor Payne and the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir sang, and Jazz Pianist Oliver Jones played “Hymn to Freedom”.

Mr. David McGuinty (Ottawa South, Lib.):
Mr. Speaker, the National Arts Centre just kicked off a fundraiser to honour Oscar Peterson, arguably the greatest jazz man of all time.
Peterson grew up in Montreal in humble circumstances and rose to the top of his art.
Generations of Canadian musicians have been influenced by his talent, and so it is appropriate that the NAC should commemorate his distinguished career.
Oscar Peterson made generations of Canadians dance, cry and pause to reflect, especially at his many appearances at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.
His music is part of the cultural history of Quebec and Canada. His personal story will continue to inspire Canadians and to honour our society.
I encourage Canadians to contribute to the National Arts Centre campaign and to discover or rediscover the music of this great Quebecker and Canadian.
Celebrating Oscar Peterson
A member of jazz royalty, the legendary Oscar Peterson was nicknamed the Maharaja of the Keyboard by none other than Duke Ellington. We pay tribute to one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, a performer whose technical brilliance astonished audiences the world over, and a man who inspired generations of musicians.
