Mini Lahore in Oslo, Norway!
Oslo's community of Gronland is multicultural with a significant presence of Indians and Pakistanis. The majority of Pakistanis belong to the province of Punjab especially those who feel nostalgic for their cultural roots, like the street life of Lahore, and thus they have named their shops and places after the names of places in their ancestral lands!! I visited this locality along with my mother and elder sister in the May of 2001.
Oslo Travel Guide: Karl Johans gate
Karl Johans gate is the main walking street of Oslo. It stretches from Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) on one side, to the Royal Palace (Slottet) on the other. Btw. Karl Johans gate literally means Karl Johan's Street.
The Visit Oslo tourist information office is located at the east side of Oslo Central Station. On the place outside of the station (Jernbanetorget) there is a clock tower called Trafikanten, which houses the Public Transportation Information office.
The lower parts of Karl Johan, and especially the first intersecting street, Skippergata, is infamous for junkies and street prostitution.
The second intersection street is Dronningens gate (The Queen's street). Here there is a small shopping center Arkaden. Also in Dronningens gate is Kirkeristen, which houses a few cafes and shops, and two kebab joints, Carmel Grill and Dronningens Kebab. The latter one is particularly good.
On top of Kirkeristen, in the next street which intersects Karl Johan there is a church. It is here that Norwegian royal weddings take place. Outside of the church is the site where the sea of flowers was created, following the 2011 Norway terror attacks.
Your can find all the regular chain stores in Karl Johan, but there are also some Norwegian designer shops like the Moods of Norway - Super Duper Store. There is a also a regular department store Steen & Strøm.
There are a few pubs in Karl Johan, the largest and most well known in the middle of Karl Johan is Scotsman.
I consider Egertorget to be the center of Karl Johan. Around here there is the luxury shopping mall Eger Shopping, a few restaurants and cafes, and the fast food chain Max. For some cheap beer and metal music, head down to the bar Rock In which is located slightly off Egertorget in Øvre Slottsgate.
The next intersecting street, Akersgata, houses a few luxury stores, and the record store Råkk & Rålls. A few hundred meters up Akersgata is the former government building which was destroyed in the 2011 Oslo terror attacks. Now, there is a small museum in there: 22. juli-senteret (the July 22nd center), which is free of charge.
Passed Akersgata is the parliament building, the small square called Dasslokket (the toilet lid), and the Grand Hotel.
After the parliament building there is a park called Spikersuppa (The Nail Soup), a series of restaurants including T.G.I Fridays and Hard Rock Cafe. There is also a shopping center called Paleet. Around the corner of Hard Rock Cafe, in Universitetsgaten (The University Street), there is a legendary rock joint called Last Train. And at the end of Universitetsgaten, towards the harbor, is Oslo City Hall and the National Theater.
A bit further down Karl Johan, opposite of the National Theater is Universitetsplassen (The University Place), which houses the Faculty of Law of the University of Oslo.
At the very end of Karl Johans gate is the Royal Palace. It is possible to enter parts of the Royal Palace. You enter in the back, and it costs 135 NOK. There are plenty of free things to do in the park that surrounds the Royal Castle. Apart from the park itself, and the changing of guards, there are ever changing exhibitions in the park.

BEST Asian Grocery Store, Oslo *PROMOTION CODE*
ร้านขายของชำเอเชียที่ดีที่สุดและใหญ่ที่สุดในออสโล ประเทศนอร์เวย์
Hi guys! Welcome back to ScanWith Kido. I always get asked by my family and asian friends what I usually eat and if it's difficult to find food ingredients from Asia here. They probably thought that it would be difficult to cook some asian dishes that we used to eat back home in Thailand. Well, I actually don't agree.
Today I'm taking you A Food Market which is the biggest and probably the oldest asian grocery store here in Oslo. Later in the end of the video, I'll give you the *promotion code* so keep watching!!
The store is about 5 minutes walk from Oslo central station so it's pretty convenient. Here you will find a good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, dry stores, frozen food products and a lot more which you will see in the video. Most of the products are imported from Asia, for example Vietnam, Thailand, The philippines and many more.
I would say that A Food Market has the best selection for asian fruits and vegetables, even the ones that you wouldn't expect to find here in Oslo, you'll find them here. Fresh fruits and vegetables come every Monday and Wednesday so just remember that.
Besides free product, there are a lot of dry stores here as well such as sauses, rice, noodles, spices and so on. The frozen department is also huge. You can get pretty much everything here. Come to this place and you'll get everything you want for cooking. This is what I like about A Food Market.
For those who want to cook an asian dish but don't know how. A Food Market will provide you some recipes. There are also food samples every Friday and Saturday afternoon. Come here and taste some tasty asian food and you will love it!
For more information, check out the link in the description box and here comes the promotion code. I know some of you have been waiting. The code is Let's Scan. A Walk Around The City Centre, Oslo, Norway
The inner city centre is bounded by Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) to the east, the Royal Palace (Slottet) to the west and the seafront (from Akershus fortress to Aker brygge) to the south. It is fairly compact and easily walkable. Karl Johans gate, the mostly pedestrian main street connecting Oslo S and the Palace, is the main artery of downtown Oslo. However, several of the neighbourhoods close to the centre hold interesting sights and entertainment offerings, so to explore these you should make use of the city's comprehensive and modern public transport system.

Oslo, Norway
Oslo City, Oslo City Photos, Oslo Photos, Oslo Pictures, Oslo Images, Oslo, Norway Oslo City Guide
Oslo is the capital and the most populous city in Norway. It constitutes both a county and a municipality. Founded in the year 1040, and established as a kaupstad or trading place in 1048 by Harald Hardrada, the city was elevated to a bishopric in 1070 and a capital under Haakon V of Norway around 1300. Personal unions with Denmark from 1397 to 1523 and again from 1536 to 1814 and with Sweden from 1814 to 1905 reduced its influence. After being destroyed by a fire in 1624, the city was moved closer to Akershus Fortress during the reign of Christian IV of Denmark and renamed Christiania in his honour. It was established as a municipality (formannskapsdistrikt) on 1 January 1838. Following a spelling reform, it was known as Kristiania from 1877 to 1925, at which time its original Norwegian name was restored.
Oslo is the economic and governmental centre of Norway. The city is also a hub of Norwegian trade, banking, industry and shipping. It is an important centre for maritime industries and maritime trade in Europe. The city is home to many companies within the maritime sector, some of which are among the world's largest shipping companies, shipbrokers and maritime insurance brokers. Oslo is a pilot city of the Council of Europe and the European Commission intercultural cities programme.
Oslo is considered a global city and ranked Beta World City in studies carried out by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network in 2008. It was ranked number one in terms of quality of life among European large cities in the European Cities of the Future 2012 report by fDi magazine. A survey conducted by ECA International in 2011 placed Oslo as the second most expensive city in the world for living expenses after Tokyo. In 2013 Oslo tied with the Australian city of Melbourne as the fourth most expensive city in the world, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)'s Worldwide Cost of Living study.
As of January 1, 2016, the municipality of Oslo has a population of 658,390,[2] while the population of the city's urban area was 942,084. The metropolitan area had an estimated population of 1.71 million. The population is currently increasing at record rates, making it the fastest growing major city in Europe.[13] This growth stems for the most part from international immigration and related high birth rates, but also from intra-national migration. The immigrant population in the city is growing somewhat faster than the Norwegian population, and in the city proper this is now more than 25% of the total.
How to do Oslo Norway on a budget!
How to do Oslo, Norway on a budget I hear you ask? Well, ask no more!
I met with a friend and a fellow YouTuber Eivind ( his channel who was kind enough to host me in house through CouchSurfing (I had my own room), he hosted the likes of Simon Wilson and Click For Taz…..YES……I slept in the same bed as Click For Taz haha! Eivind showed me the best spots of the city and although it was winter and cold as anything, I had a really good time. Oslo surprised me because I didn’t expect it to be as beautiful as it was.
We walked to the beautiful harbour where you can see Munch Museum (opening in 2020), the Oslo Opera House (walking up to the top of the Opera House for sunset with a drink in hand is absolute bliss) & the Oslo Fjord. The Salt Village is overlooking the Oslo Fjord where you can grab a bite to eat & watch the locals jump into the Fjord after being in temperatures up to 90 degrees in the sauna! You can do this yourself too if you have the heart haha! We also went to the small Bazaar where I bought some chocolate which was made by this very entrepreneurial group of youths. I absolutely loved this area and the vibes here are soo good. Walking some more, we went to the Vippa food, culture and education centre where we grabbed some hot chocolate and enjoyed the vibes. There was a painting class at the time and the paintings were gorgeous. When we sat down to drink, their canvases were empty and halfway through, they created this magic of colours, a bit like how I see life! It is what we make it
We walked to the beautiful City Hall, Eivind made a lot of purchases (he is easily influenced haha) then went to check out the Christmas market which was bustling with people and Christmas vibes!
Eivind showed me the Royal Place as well as the Parliament Building where he used to work! I even had the privilege of checking out the Oslo Stock Exchange which celebrated its 200th Birthday in 2019 because Eivind works here!
After a busy day exploring, Eivind and I did went to the shops as we wanted to cook Somali food together + blind taste British as part of this cultural exchange and we chilled with a movie and a cuppa in hand!
The next day, more exploring and eating. We went to Vigeland Park which was completely free and a fab place to chill as well as The Food Hall where we could taste a lot of different foods and enjoy the atmosphere. In the evening, we cooked and ate together!
The only things that really costed money was food and most of that, we cooked at home so that was okay. It costed about £14 each way to get from the main airport to the city centre but I believe this can be done cheaper too!
Main take away here is: Create meaningful local connections wherever you are travelling to and find some nice people like Eivind who will make your stay much more enjoyable and enriching, who maybe will share their home and heart with you and you can share a bit of your time, energy, culture food etc with them too. This is what it is all about! Connecting with people and allowing them to show you the best of their city. This is what I value the most, not the paid attractions but real, genuine connections.
Thank you so much Eivind! If you want to go to Oslo, get in touch with Eivind, maybe you can stay, cook or explore Oslo with him if you are lucky!
If you like this video, please give it a like, comment and subscribe. It would mean a lot to me. Thank you.
