Tour of Scavi Archeologici di Ostia Antica, Ostia Antica, Rome, Italy
Ostia Antica is a large archeological site, close to the modern town of Ostia, that was the location of the harbour city of ancient Rome, which is approximately 30 km to the northeast. Ostia in Latin means mouth.
At the mouth of the River Tiber, Ostia was Rome's seaport, but, due to silting and a drop in sea level, the site now lies 3 km from the sea. The site is noted for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings, magnificent frescoes and impressive mosaics.

1:04 - Terme di Nettuno. To the east of the theatre are very large baths (c. 67 x 67 metres), today known as the Baths of Neptune. The building was excavated by Lanciani in 1888 and Vaglieri in 1909 and 1910. Unfortunately it has not been the subject of a monograph. It is famous because of its Antonine black-and-white floor mosaics. The complex replaced baths from the late first century AD, and was financed by Hadrian with two million sesterces, and by Antoninus Pius with additional money and marble.

3:05 - Panorama from the top of the Roman Theatre of Ostia Antica. It was built by Augusto at the end of the first millennium and was rebuilt in brick in 196 CE. Although the theater has undergone reconstruction since then, the original walls can still be seen. The theater may seem like just a historic site, but it is still active, hosting performances that range from concerts to plays. The theater can hold up to 3000 people. A prominent events venue within the theatre is the Anfiteatro di Ostia Antica, stretching across three levels with a rich decor.

Ostia Antica, harbor of the Imperial Rome - A computer reconstruction
This is a short video containing still images of my reconstructions of the Roman town of Ostia. The Ostia Antica Park is one of the largest and most important italian archaeological sites of the ancient Rome. With his fifty hectares, its buildings and its streets, it testifies the development of a large urban and commercial center during the imperial age. Ostia was the most important port of the antiquity, the gate of Rome on the Mediterranean sea.
This ancient roman town is located at the mouth of the Tiber, hence its name: in fact 'ostium' in latin means 'mouth of the river'. It was a quite large town and for its importance and extension it was called 'the second Rome'.
I have visited the town many times during my life and each time I was amazed by its monuments, its mosaics, its architecture. I have projected myself in a imaginary world, trying to picture the buildings around me. This reconstruction is the product of my researches and long study of the roman architecture that ended up with the modeling of a huge 3d model (around 15 million of polygons) representing the whole town - and part of the neighborhood.
According to my knowledge (and please let me know if I am wrong), this is the first time this town has been entirely reconstructed in 3D.
I have produced many still images and packaged them into apps for iOS and Android, a sort of archeological guide based only on 3d images. You can find more info about the iOS apps on my web site at:
or searching 'ostia antica' on the Apple Store or on the Goofle Play.

Ostia Antica was located at the mouth of the river Tiber, but now it is about 3 kilometers from the sea, just 26 kilometers from Rome. Ancient Ostia is an alternative to Pompeii and many tourists prefer it. In Ostia Antica you can even see three-story houses with shops on the ground floor!

Ostia Antica Chapter 1: An Introduction and Overview
This multi-segment series on Ostia Antica begins with an introduction to the site, ancient Rome's port city-- the key components that identify it as a Roman city, with distinct characteristics that make it a unique city, enjoying a privileged relationship with Rome, from its inception to its demise.
Each video is a co-production between the AIRC and Northeastern University (Prof. Vincent Rocchio). Filming was done in May 2010. The NEU film students who made the individual videos are cited at the end of each segment; the Institute thanks them for all of their hard work in an engaging, outdoor environment. All rights to these videos belong to the American Institute for Roman Culture through the Superintendency of Ostia Antica. For further inquiries, contact info@romanculture.org.
