Rappelling down Otter Cliff - view from my GoPro butt-cam, as the climbing guide called it. A little long and boring, as the climb back up was a tad challenging. Super views and worth every penny.
Otter Cliffs, on the southeast side of Mount Desert Island, is the most popular climbing cliff in the national park as well as Maine and is the most famous sea cliff climbing area in the United States. The 500-foot-long sea cliff rises 50 to 60 feet above a wide rock bench alongside the surf. The cliff face is broken into vertical angular faces by crack systems and arêtes.

Thunder Hole, Acadia National Park, Maine, United States, North America
Thunder Hole is the place in Acadia National Park to experience the thunder of the sea against the rocky shores of Maine! On calm days you may wonder what the fuss is all about. But wait until the waves kick up a few notches. Thunder Hole is a small inlet, naturally carved out of the rocks, where the waves roll into. At the end of this inlet, down low, is a small cavern where, when the rush of the wave arrives, air and water is forced out like a clap of distant thunder. Water may spout as high as 40 feet with a thunderous roar! Hence the name: Thunder Hole. This spot also offers gorgeous panoramic views of Otter Cliff, on the right or south side, Schoodic Peninsula in the far distance, and Sand Beach and Great Head to the left or to the north. Thunder Hole is a great place to stand and watch or sit and relax, taking in the spectacular sights, sounds and smells. One of the pleasant things that greets you upon arrival, depending upon the time of year, is the aroma of wild roses. Right next to the stairs that lead down to the ocean, are large groupings of wild roses or rose hips. Rose hips are a potent source of vitamin C, at least until they become dry or are processed. Note: The Island Explorer Shuttle Bus stops here about every half hour during normal seasonal daytime hours. The last bus leaves at 6:58 P.M. Check their schedule to verify.

Sand Beach, Newport Cove, Acadia National Park, Maine, United States, North America
Sand Beach, in Acadia National Park, is nestled in a small inlet between the granite mountains and rocky shores of Mount Desert Island. This gorgeous 290 yard long beach is one of the most popular points of interest on the island. The thousands of years of pounding surf created a beach that is largely comprised of unique sand of shell fragments. The ocean temperature rarely exceeds 55 degrees in the summer and there is approximately one half cup of salt per gallon of ocean water. Access to Sand Beach is provided via the Park Loop Road just after the park fee entrance station on the northeastern side of the island. A lifeguard is on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Changing rooms and restrooms are located next to the parking area. The Island Explorer Shuttle Bus has a pickup and drop-off point here and stops about every half hour during normal season hours. The mountain that you will notice from the parking area is likely The Beehive. Look closely and you might see people climbing toward the summit. There is a very nice oceanside trail, accessed from the upper parking lot, that follows the shore's edge past Thunder Hole and arrives at Otter Cliff to the south. This is well worth the trek.

Hiking Acadia National Park - Maine
After a 10-month absence from Youtube, and 20 years since I last visited, join me on a 3 day trip to Maine's Acadia National Park.
For this trip I concentrated on the Atlantic Coast area of the Eastern portion of the park, visiting areas such as Cadillac Mountain, Otter Cliffs, and Sand Beach.
My day 1 plan was to leave Blackwoods Campground after setting up and hiking the Ocean Path up to Sand Beach but the 8-hour drive was enough to call it a day once I arrived. The cliffs at the end of the campground path were definitely enough to keep my busy until well after Sunset.
Day 2 I visited Cadillac Mountain, going over Eagles Crag and Dike Peak on my out-and-back hike.
Day 3 started with a brisk road walk to the Ocean Path, which winds 2 miles up the coast to Sand Beach and passes both Otter Cliffs and Thunder Hole on the way. I ended the day with an excellent climb up and over Gorham Mountain to close the loop back to Otter Cove (with a great shortcut!)
Words can't explain the inescapable beauty of this place, I just hope I did it some justice here.
Thanks for watching and pass this along to anyone you feel would be interested.

Total hiking distance for all days: 23.6 miles
Elevation gained: 3,570'
The first few minutes might seem like they are shot on a potato phone but it will clear up. I didn't realize I was zoomed in on my camera until the next morning.
