Overland Expo East Trip Ep 04 Cathey's Creek
We went towards Brevard, NC. Robert found free camping in Pisgah National Forest, not far from Hendersonville, NC. It will be close to the South Carolina border. Cathey's Creek in the Pisgah National Forest.
We found a camp spot in the forest. We can only stay in the spots marked for camping. The ones we saw had a parking area, then a tent area a short walk away. We found one with a level and fairly big parking area so that we could set up the roof-top tent. There were two fire rings a short distance away. A big log with a cut out that looked like a seat was near one of the fire rings. We were able to park without leveling blocks. We are off the road. Several cars did go by, but we are off a dirt road. No cell service.
Robert is convinced that the water from Cathey’s Creek is the best filtered water he has ever had. Cold morning but it warmed up nicely. Got up and had eggs, bacon pieces/ends, and avocado for breakfast. We went to the creek and filled up water bottles and the dromedary bag. We packed up and left by about 11 a.m. and left the campsite to head toward Cruso.
We headed toward the Pisgah National Forest. We got onto Cathey Creek Trail. We enjoyed beautiful and windy roads. The colors were absolutely wonderful. We made our way to Harmon Den Horse Camp to check out the dispersed camping. There was a fee for camping at the horse camp, so we continued on. We saw a parking area and another dirt road. We found a pull off with a fire ring off of forest service road 148A.
We left the campsite to explore what was up the road. We thought there may be other opportunities to camp. We drove a few miles and ended up crossing into Tennessee. We saw a group of hikers at the border. The border was the Appalachian Trail.
After exploring and discovering no other camping options, we turned around and set up camp at the one we first saw on 148A. It was a nice evening. Nice camp. Spotty internet, ranging from 1X to 1 bar of LTE.
We had bacon wrapped chicken and salad for dinner. Robert talked to the guys on the radio. There was contesting, and Robert didn’t stay on the radio for long. I worked for a couple of hours until my laptop battery ran out.
There was wind up in the trees, but not blowing our tent. Rain started around 8:45 pm. We were already nestled in our tent way before the rain started.
We ate breakfast of eggs, bacon and avocado. Things were very wet. We wanted to head down the road and find another campsite. I couldn’t get my email to send so I needed to find enough signal to get a client email done.
We packed up our wet gear and were on a wonderful adventure of dirt roads. No internet on the trail. We eventually made it to Hot Springs, NC. On the trail we even entered TN then back into NC. We crossed the Appalachian Trail at the border.
Wildlife Watering Hole Ouachita National Forest Dispersed Camping
Found this dispersed/boondocking camping spot in the Ouachita National Forest and outside my back door there was a wildlife watering hole. I did some hiking and I found an old logging road I scouted out on my mountain bike. The temperature that day gradually reached 80 degrees which made it a perfect day to disperse/boondocking camping in the national forest. Thanks for Watching!

Arkansas Hiking Trip - Eagle Rock Loop
Spring break 2011 hiking the Eagle Rock Loop in the Ouachita National Forest near Caddo Gap, Arkansas
History of Arkansas State Parks Through 2008
In 1907, officials of the Fort Smith Lumber Company toured Petit Jean Mountain in the Arkansas River Valley. Although concerned about difficult logging operations due to rugged terrain, they were so impressed with the mountain's beauty that they suggested it join the National Park System.
By 1921, company physician Dr. T.W. Hardison was leading this effort: after securing legislative approval, he approached National Parks Director Stephen Mather with an offer. Upon review, Mather asserted the property was indeed striking, but not of national significance. He challenged Dr. Hardison to establish a State Park system – an idea Hardison enthusiastically embraced.
With land donations and legislative support, Act 276 of 1923 was passed and the Arkansas State Parks were born. Growth came in the 1930s with vital contributions of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Parks were added, and the CCC built facilities and infrastructure, much of which stands today.
Then and now, State Parks were favorably received. We now have 52 state parks on 54,400 acres, with 1,800 campsites, 208 cabins, and five lodges serving 8 million visitors annually.
In 1996, Arkansas voters passed a constitutionally dedicated conservation sales tax, Amendment 75, benefiting Arkansas State Parks and three sister conservation agencies. Today, Arkansas's State Parks are among the most respected in the U.S.
Trans America Trail - Arkansas | Part 1 | 07
Today we embark on yet another overland adventure into the great state of Arkansas. We cross the Mississippi River into Arkansas, we eat at a local restraunt off the White River in Clarendon then head North West up the Trans America Trail.
We find our selves stuck in some slippery situations along the way into some farm land after some crazy storms pass. The Jeep Wrangler is almost uncontrollable as we navigate our way through some ice like silty mud. The TAT has also brought us to a TAT Sign in location where we meet a few nice older gentleman who give us the low down on some TAT history.
Overlanding in our Jeep Wrangler has been epic so far since we left the Atlantic ocean in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We are stoked to make it to the Ozarks of Arkansas and see what nature has to offer.
The cross country trip is one for the book and we take you guys along for the ride as we cross North America on the Trans America trail out to the gold coast of California. We are also pumped for Overland Expo West 2019 this year! --- We hope to see some big names and familiar faces out there in Flagstaff, Arizona May 17th!
Thanks for tuning in guys!

Museum of Native American History, White River Monster, Possum Kingdom Trail, Gilbert
The Museum of Native American Histoy in Bentonville is a collection, according to many visitors rivals that of the Smithsonian with artifacts from 14,000 years ago. The White River Monster hasn't been sighted since the early 1970's, but its legend continues in the Newport area. The Possum Kingdom Trail north of Lake Ouachita in the Ouachita National Forest offers mountain biking opportunities on gravel, paved and unsurfaced road types. The self proclaimed Coolest Town in Arkansas (coldest place on average) happens to be Gilbert near the banks of the Buffalo National River The town and the General Store haven't changed much since 1901.
How to Collect Crystals in Arkansas at WEGNER PHANTOM QUARTZ MINE | CRYSTAL DIGGING GUIDE Episode 3
In this third episode of the Ultimate Crystal Digging Guide, I go on a trip to the Wegner Phantom Quartz Crystal Mine.
Join me as I find plenty of clear crystal points and clusters as well as a few rare black Phantom Quartz Crystals.
The Wegner Mine is located in Montgomery County near Mount Ida, Arkansas. This area is known to be one of the best quartz crystal deposits in the world. It is the largest singular deposit of quartz on this planet, stretching all the way from Oklahoma to East of Little Rock. Some of the best quality clear crystals can be self-collected around Hot Springs National Park and Mount Ida.
This rock hounding adventure starts with a bumpy open-truck ride that takes approximately 40 minutes and travels thru the Ouachita National Forest. After arriving at the mine site, your guide will point out the tailings digging area where you are allowed to collect as many stones and crystals as you would like. The allotted digging time at the actual mine is four hours. Make sure to make reservations for this mine. (Filmed in August 2018)
This peculiar crystal mine is known for many Specialty Master Crystal Formations such as Phantom Quartz, Tabular Quartz, Double Terminated crystals and more.

The Restroom With Bullet Holes & Long Drive to Kansas
The Restroom With Bullet Holes & Long Drive to Kansas - on our way to Kansas from Hot Springs, Arkansas, we passed by a rest area where the restrooms had bullet holes on the door. It made us feel unsafe. Who did that?!
Also, as one of our goals on this trip to complete all 50 states of the United States, we are stopping by Kansas before our next national park. Kansas is one of those states we both have not been to. It'll be our state #19 of 50.
2 goals in one road trip! This is going to be a hectic one!
WHO ARE WE?
We, Irwin and Victorina, have decided to quit our jobs, sell everything we have and go on an epic road trip of visiting all U.S. National Parks! Follow our journey - from letting go of our material possessions, preparing for the extended camping trip, and even the mistakes, joys, doubts and adventures we make along the way! We hope to inspire others to appreciate the beauty of Planet Earth.
Adventure begins in Feb 2017. We estimate this road trip will take us approximately 12 to 16 months. We know we will some amazing places and meet a lot of interesting people.
If you have an idea or suggestions for us for places to visit along the way, feel free to contact us!
NEW VIDEOS every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. If we miss a day, it is probably because we had no phone signal inside the park or we couldn't find any wifi access. If this is the case, we will upload our video as soon as we get any phone signal.

The road that you have to travel to get here...
We had left Rush Ghost Town and were exploring to find a campsite along the buffalo river that was FREE CAMPING. We checked out some WMA areas but didn't find what we were after. We did travel a lot of dirt roads and the Nissan Titan handled them like the beast it is. This area is huge with lots to explore. We had decided to drive on into Jasper AR (as it was getting into the evening) but saw a sign on the roadside and decided to follow it. We are so glad we did. We drove a rough dirt road, found a awesome campsite right on the Buffalo Rivers edge. It didn't take us no time to get the smittybilt rooftoptent setup and swim gear put on. We aired up our float tubes headed up river on foot and floated back down.I didn't get the float on video (sorry) we were just having to much fun. This is a awesome place to camp. If you watch the video the name of this area is shown twice. Since this was a holiday weekend most places were overflowing with no campsites left. There is a area to camp down the road from Rush Ghost Town at 8 dollars a night . It is a nice little area but not what we were after. I share the videos and pictures that were taken in this video with you.We met a awesome couple that were also camping here and hope to run into them again. We chatted with them about camping and overlanding as we packed up to leave. The next stop....The Lost Valley in the Ozark National Forest .
Enjoying Arkansas outdoors and dispersed camping at The Buffalo River.

Wife's First Backpacking Trip
Lindsey 4WD Road near Hector, Arkansas
If you are into floating, whether it be in a canoe, a kayak, or a tube, the Ozark Mountains are the place for you to be. This trail ends near the Illinois Bayou in the Ozark National Forest, and there are several places along Highway 27, on the west end of the trail, to begin your day on the water, or end your day after a drive in the beautiful Ozark National Forest. In addition to the Illinois Bayou, it's just a short drive from this trail to Big Piney Creek or the Buffalo National River.
An easy drive along a relatively smooth forest service road, the highlight of Lindsey Road is the ford at East Fork Illinois Bayou near the west end of the trail. There are several intersecting trails along Lindsey Road so feel free to explore the area. Be sure to consult the Big Piney Ranger District Motor Vehicle Use Map before heading out. Just south of the trails west end is the USFS Bayou Bluff Recreation Area on IIlinois Bayou. This USFS campground/recreation area was constructed by the WPA in the 1930's and features some native stone masonry shelters located on the west bank of Illinois Bayou. The campground also has a pavilion that can be rented for group gatherings and potable water and vault/pit toilets are available. The recreation area is closed from the 3rd weekend in December to the 3rd weekend in March each year.
This area is popular with canoeists, kayakers, tubers and other outdoor enthusiasts. You can put into the stream with your boat or tube at Bayou Bluff, and take out a short distance downstream near a highway bridge over the Middle Fork Illinois Bayou.
