National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Doylestown, PA
The first of many projects at the National Shrine was the main sanctuary. Several years later New Holland was asked to produce the furnishings for the chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa which was an exact replica of the chapel in Poland.
THE SHRINE OF OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa (or simply Czestochowa), known also as the American Czestochowa is a Polish-American Roman Catholic shrine near Doylestown, Pennsylvania, founded in 1953. It houses a reproduction of the Black Madonnaicon of Częstochowa, Poland. The heart of Poland's second prime minister, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, is also preserved there.
In 1953 a Polish Pauline monk, Father Michael M. Zembrzuski, purchased a tract of land near Doylestown with the intention of building a chapel dedicated to the Black Madonna of Częstochowa at Jasna Góra, Poland's most important religious icon, to reconnect Polish-Americans with their Polish Catholic roots. A barn was converted into the first chapel; it was moved to a new site and dedicated on June 26, 1955.
The chapel was reorganized as a shrine to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of the Polish nation in 1966. It was dedicated on October 16, 1966, by Archbishop (later Cardinal) John Krol and President Lyndon B. Johnson. The centerpiece of the new shrine was a church building designed by the Polish-American architect George Szeptycki housing the replica of the Black Madonna painting.
In subsequent years other facilities have been added to the site, including a Polish-American cemetery The cemetery also includes the graves of members of the Polish Veterans of World War II. The lower church interior was remodeled to resemble the interior of the Jasna Góra shrine in Poland housing the original painting. There is also an outdoor pathway with the Stations of the Cross.

Driving From Warrington To Doylestown, PA On PA Route 611 North
After catching some trains in Bristol, Pennsylvania I then headed to Doylestown to attend a university volleyball match so I decided to film driving on PA Route 611 North from Warrington to Doylestown in Bucks County. I've been on this major state highway before & got on it from the PA Turnpike a few minutes ago.
Thankfully I didn't encouter any traffic today since it was just after rush hour. This roadway runs from Interstate 95 in the southern part of Philadelphia north to Interstate 380 in Coolbaugh Township in the Pocono Mountains.

The painting of Mary holding the Christ Child, thought to have been made by Saint Juke after the Crucifixion of Jesus, is shrouded in mystery and miracle. A wooden table surface was used as canvas. Hundreds of years of dark concealment and exposure to candle smoke; darkened the surface and turned Mary’s skin black.
During the fourth century, the painting was found in the Holy Land and taken to Constantinople, where the Emperor Constantine erected a church for its enthronement. Then, in 1382, the painting was brought to his birthplace in Opale, Poland by Ladislaus of Opole to save it from invaders. On the way they stopped near the town of Czestochowa at Jasna Gora (bright hill) in a church named for the Assumption. The next morning, preparing to resume their trip, the horses refused to move. Believing this a heavenly sign; St. Ladislaus ordered the image to stay in Czestochowa. To ensure its protection, he asked the Monks of Saint Paul to guard the icon.
Many miracles connected to the painting have been recorded. In 1430, the Saracens laid siege to the Polish Shrine resulting in damage to the holy picture by an arrow. Another time, attackers became frightened and fled when they were confronted by townspeople processing with the sacred picture held high. Once again, when the icon was ordered to be burned by an evil emperor, it was miraculously saved from harm when his wife hid the image. In 1655, the portrait faced danger at the hands of 12,000 Swedish invaders who were confronted the 300 men guarding it. In the end, the smaller number of protectors vanquished the larger group. Papal recognition of the miraculous image was made by Pope Clement XI in 1717.
In times of strife and persecution, the Polish people have always turned to Mary with their prayers. During World War I, in answer to their prayers, Mary appeared in the sky over Warsaw sending invading Russians back across the River Vistula. Then, 25 years later, after Hitler ordered all religious pilgrimages stopped, half a million Poles went to the image’s sanctuary in defiance of Hitler's orders; none were harmed.
Today, the Polish people continue to honor their beloved portrait of the Madonna and. Each year, the Shrine of Czestochowa in Poland attracts millions of worshipers and tourists who come to honor the miraculous image of Our Lady of Czestochowa. In 1966, in celebration of the 1000th Anniversary of Poland's Christianity, a National Shrine to Our Lady of Czestochowa was dedicated in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and is under the direction of the Pauline Fathers and Brothers, who also administer the Shrine in Poland. License to use the image above is given by the Pauline Father to the Knights of Columbus for use in conjunction with the Arizona Rosary Celebration.
