Winter sea kayaking in Croatia 2018
Polar kayaking conditions in the Adriatic? I know, probably goes in the same story as talking rabbits and Alice from Wonderland, right? Nope. Cold northern fronts have literally paralyzed Croatia (both land and islands). We took the opportunity to go for our coldest paddle ever. Expect snow, ice flowstones and paddling on minus 5 Celzius.
Adventure Dubrovnik - Sea Kayaking Dubrovnik Tour
Thanks to Adventure Dubrovnik for the Sea Kayak tour while we were in Dubrovnik. It was a nice change to get out of the crowded city and onto the water. It took a bit of getting in sync but we finally did ok and were able to paddle somewhat together and not fall too far behind. It's tough to paddle and shoot at the same time!
We opted for the shorter route and more time at the beach cave, which was a good move since it's not easy paddling in the ocean, it's not like a lake with no current. Once we arrived on the beach we had some time to relax, snorkel a bit, watch people jump off the rocks, and had a sandwich.
Soon though it was time to paddle back with the great view of the old town walls, pretty cool. It was a nice tour and very fun, thanks again to Adventure Dubrovnik!

Sea Kayaking Split / Brela - Croatia
Sea Kayaking Split / Brela -
Only one hour driving distance from center of Split there is a small place called Jakiruša - Brela. The beautiful Jakiruša bay is surrounded with the spectacular mountain of Biokovo. There is a sandy beach in Jakiruša, popular with the locals and tourists for swimming and on the west side there is a rocky coast and one of the last untouched bays in this part of the Riviera – bay Vrulja. We launch our sea kayaks on the beach and paddle lightly towards the deserted sandy beaches of the Vrulja bay. We stop to observe the submarine groundwater source that brings 50 m3 of drinking water per second to this place even in the summer. Our paddle adventure takes us to the Vrulja beach where we pause to swim and snorkel in the crystal blue waters.

Dubrovnik is beautiful from land, but there is something to be said for its coastline and beauty when seen from the sea. The workout was the cherry on top.

DINARA Trail Running Croatia - Via Adriatica - Outdoors Croatia
Running through the beautiful plateau and a steep climb to the Croatia highest peak. You can reach Suho polje, the starting point of this route via rough unpaved road by a terrain vehicle, a higher car or any car you don’t care about too much. An alternative to this road is a hiking trail from Kninsko polje, you can find on this link, but it will be challenging to make the peak and the return in one day.
From Suho polje follow gpx trace. You can see a few tank racks in the distance but have no fear, this side of Dinara is free of landmines.
After passing seven kilometres you’ll reach the Brezovac Hut which is opened only when announced. Outside the hut, there is a fresh water well with an old school pump. If dry, the pump cannot work, therefore you have to pour water into the steel tube and then leave some water in the bucket for other visitors to do likewise.
Above Brezovac the trail leads through the forest to the edge of Duler valley. This micro-location is our most favourite one. Two kilometres further on take a marked hiking path on your right. Finally, three hundred meters climb through the rough rocky terrain will lead you to the summit.
This is quite a remote area so take caution. Estimate your strength properly, remember where you had a mobile signal along the route and team up.
Via Adriatica is a long distance trail project that will connect all of Croatian coastal mountains from Istria to Dubrovnik. This is where the trail departs from the sea to reach beautiful Dinara mountain and Sinjal peak, the top of Croatia. This video represents how I feel when mountain running. It is a kind of meditation for most of the time, then it gets spinny near the summits and I mostly don't remember much of the descents.
For this run I chose La Sportiva Akasha shoes from that are designed for long and technical trails. Even completely wet from deap melting snow below the peak they remained comfortable and dried wery quickly.

From media:
Kayaking in Dubrovnik, Croatia
This footage is from a quick kayak trip around the walls of the old city in Dubrovnik, Croatia. There are lots of tours and most are longer but we just took a quick tour around the outskirts of the city to get a different perspective of the place.
A different perspective indeed - wow!
