The town of Interlaken makes a perfect home base for exploring the beautiful mountains all around the central region of Switzerland.
In this segment we will take a quick look at what Interlaken has to offer. The advantages of staying in Interlaken are the many hotels, restaurants and shops, and wonderful train and bus connections to get up to the mountain sites. Some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery is waiting for you just outside of Interlaken in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
Europe's longest glacier -- four famous mountain peaks: the Monk, Eiger, Jungfrau and Shilthorn -- astonishingly beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley, my favorite -- Europe's highest railroad station, delightful mountain villages of Grindelwald, Wengen and Murren -- two large lakes with tour boat service -- and some fascinating nearby cities.
We have many other movies about the surrounding mountains and valleys you can find on our YouTube channel and on our website.
All of these attractions are close to the town of Interlaken which makes a perfect base from which to explore the region. There are nearly 100 hotels and guest houses in all price ranges in the city. While Interlaken is attractive with excellent supply of these hotels shops and restaurants, and there's a pretty park in the middle, frankly it is not one of Switzerland's really quaint and traditional villages. You don't come to this area just to see Interlaken. Instead it's a practical tourist center with fine support services, excellent rail and boat connections, and a compactness that makes for easy walking anywhere in town. There's also a large casino filled with slot machines for some evening amusement. The nearby surrounding peaks and valleys are your main reason for being in Interlaken so your time in town is mostly for eating and sleeping, doing a little shopping, in order to gear up for the excursions into the mountains.
For the more adventurous you can go paragliding. That's right even if you don't know anything about it you can go with a pilot and enjoy tandem paraglide ride. They'll drive you up to the hills and then you do a little walking, hike up further up on the slope, and you jump off, and the payoff is you get to glide down and enjoy a fantastic view.
Or for something less adventurous you can just rent a bicycle and go peddle around. There's a lot to see in the Interlaken area. The town itself is relatively flat and you can peddle through the shopping areas and up into the residential zones.
As you can see the main activity in town is shopping -- all sorts of souvenirs for sale, clothing, you can buy some hiking gear. It's a great place for backpacks, for boots, hats, clothing of all kinds, walking sticks and a T-shirt that says Interlaken.
There's not much of a pedestrian zone that's free of automobiles here but they do have one little lane that's for pedestrians. But the rest of town is very friendly for walking around, the sidewalks are wide and there's always things to look at and things to do.
While you have many lovely hotels to pick from there's no question that one of them stands out above all the others. It's the Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel and Spa Five-Star, ultra-deluxe. Even if you cannot afford to spend the night here you might enjoy a meal in one of their various restaurants and you can even have a nice meal on their front terrace with a view looking up towards the Jungfrau.
This great meadow is right next to the one major street of town, the Hohweg, which is beautifully landscaped and kept in a semi-natural state with flowers and trees and the meadow along one side and grand hotels on the other.
If you're a gambler of course there is a casino like there is in most Swiss towns and it's an elegant place. It's part of the Kursal complex which for 100 years has been a cultural center of the city, set in a beautiful park with fountains and flowers.
Tourists have been coming to Interlaken and the area since about 1800 when it was first popularized by some romantic painters and then tourism really increased in the 1890s and early 1900s with the opening of railway service.
There is a quiet residential area behind the main commercial town. Population of Interlaken is quite small, just about 5000 people, many of them living in traditional chalet-style houses that really make something for you to have a look at. So that's another nice activity -- take a stroll in the residential neighborhood.

Interlaken, Switzerland
Located between the two lakes of Brienz and Thun which are joined by the river Aare, Interlaken at 566m above sea level is perhaps a town that can claim to be the international capital of outdoor activities.
To visit I stayed at Camping Alpenblick. There is a bus stop outside the campsite, however if you feel fit you can walk the 5km or so into town, picking up some local cheese, milk and eggs from the farm shops on the way back. The campsite will give you a pass which allows you to travel by bus free of charge and gives some discounts on other attractions.
Interlaken boasts incredible scenery, the two lakes of Brienz and Thun and the attractions around them such as the St. Beatus caves. To the south we have the mountains of the Bernese Oberland and especially the Swiss Skyline peaks of the Jungfrau region, including the Jungfrau, (4,158 m), the Mönch (4,107 m) and the Eiger (3,970 m). Whilst the peaks of these mountains are accessible only to mountaineers, a sequence of connecting mountain railways gives access to the Jungfraujoch, a saddle (3,454 m) between the Jungfrau and the Mönch. Alternatively one can take the cable cars to the top of the Schilthorn to admire fantastic views from a revolving restaurant that does a complete turn once every 55 minutes. This is the location of Piz Gloria, the hideaway of Ernst Stavro Blofeld in the film On Her Majesties Secret Service and there is an excellent Bond World exhibition there as well. Another outstanding feature is the Thrill Walk at Birg on the way up to the Piz Gloria. Here one can look down at sheer rock faces through the glass or slatted metal floors.
Closer to Interlaken, the Harderkulm (1,321 m), just to the north of the town, and the Schynige Platte (1,967 m), just to the south, are also accessible by railway, and provide extensive views of the higher mountains. Boat trips operate on both lakes Thun and Brienz, serving various lakeside settlements. One of these, Brienz, is the starting point for one of Switzerland's last remaining steam operated mountain railways, the Brienz-Rothorn railway.
Other activities include backpacking (which can be easily done from the campsite) skydiving, canyoning, hang gliding, paragliding, and of course skiing.

The alpine landscapes, the dense forests and the more elevated idyllic villages are transformed into an exhilarating winter landscape. Nature is ready for you and your favourite activities: winter hikes, snowshoe tours, cross-country skiing, winter kayaking or days spent sledging or skiing. Let us show you the myriad possibilities the region has to offer.

A Swiss Adventure, Interlaken | Senior Trip - Europe 2017
Our most favorite stop on our adventure was Switzerland, and for good reason. It is a beautiful country, with beautiful scenery. We stayed in Interlaken, Switzerland, at Balmers Hostel. We loved it, there were so many cool people, all under one roof. We arrived the first half day, and hiked Harder Klum and were met with an amazing view of Interlaken. The next day we took a canyoning tour, which I made a separate video for
- (
Our final day was spent on a long, grueling, hike from Grindelwald to First. It was straight up, but to some of the best views I've ever seen. The size of the alps next to us were amazing. We kept going further after reaching the top, towards a glacial lake. Some of us swam, but the water was too cold to stay in long. What goes up must come down, we had to hike back down the paths towards Grindelwald, as the day came to an end. We didn't have enough time here, and we will for sure be back soon.

Some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery is waiting for you just outside of Interlaken in the heart of the Swiss Alps. In this movie we’re focusing on how to get the most out of your visit to the town. For the more adventurous you can go paragliding. Or for something less adventurous you can just rent a bicycle and go peddle around. There's a lot to see in the Interlaken area. The town itself is relatively flat and you can peddle through the shopping areas and up into the residential zones.

Another major attraction worth seeing near Interlaken is the city of Bern the political capital of Switzerland and it's just one hour away by train.
The Bern train station is right next to the old town so your walk through the historic zone begins the moment you arrive. The main street proceeds directly from the front of the train station right through the historic center. It's one street about ten blocks long, but it changes name several times. By the station and it's the Spitalgasse, then it becomes the Marktgasse, then the Kramgasse, then the Gerechtigkeitsgasse. Today, it's the main street of Bern, as it has been for centuries. This road is remarkable, not only for the ancient buildings and arcades that cover both sides, but for the spectacular Renaissance fountains down the middle. Today it's a popular shopping street with surprisingly modern shop interiors, and there's a slight curve with a long line of Baroque façades that combine to produce one of Bern's most impressive streetscapes. This Kramgasse and its buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the entire old city of Bern – a very impressive honor that UNESCO has designated all of the historic area as a World Heritage Site.
At the end of town across the river they have their famous bear pits. In recent years the government has greatly expanded this bear habitat to make it really a pleasant place for the bears to live.
Another important building is the Gothic cathedral with the nation's highest church tower at 328 feet, which you may climb for a bird’s eye view of the historic center. Construction of the cathedral began in 1421 in the Gothic style. It is a three-nave basilica without a transept or aisles, 85 m long and 34 m wide – it is quite huge. The walls outside are supported by flying buttresses and the majority of the building is constructed with local sandstone, and bricks were used for the ceiling for the vaults.
On the train ride back to Interlaken it is easy to get off at the picturesque city of Thun and spend a few hours walking around, enjoying the special ambience of this place, with a river running through the middle of the Old Town and a unique two-level sidewalk on the main pedestrian street. Then return to Interlaken and continue our exploration of this great city.
This video is part of a longer series that we're presenting all about Switzerland, including Lucerne, Zürich, Zermatt, Lugano, Locarno, and a lot of beautiful mountaintops scenery to share with you.
