Three new low-floor tramcars were purchased from Bombardier, numbered 501-503. The purchase price was €4.6 million each. In addition, three old trams (VIII, X and XI) from the then-current fleet were chosen to be retained and modernized through rebuilding of their chassis, and the fitting of dual traction control systems. The emergency braking system was converted to magnetic track brakes instead of the caliper brakes previously used.

It was Ing. Josef Urbanski, who planned around 1891 for the first time a cog railway powered by steam locomotives on the Pöstlingberg. His suggestion generally met with goodwill, but the Consortium for the erection of electrical systems in Linz proposed an electrically operated adhesion railway, which was finally put into action. At that time, there was no adhesion railway on the European continent with such a steep grade of 105.

In 1897 the construction of the Pöstlingbergbahn started. The construction was very labor intensive and very stressful especially for the workers, since all earthworks had to be done by hand. Even heavy materials such as cable drums, catenary masts were brought in with ox-cart. Despite the difficult circumstances, the construction work progressed rapidly and after just under a year, more precisely, only ten months after the start of construction, started on May 29, 1898, the operation.

Lokalbahn Linz Pöstlingbergbahn im Schneetreiben Dezember 2005
Am 18. Dezember 2005, wir fuhren gerade einen Ausflug zur Pöstlingbergbahn in Linz, brach plötzlich ein ordentliches Schneetreiben herein. Das machte die ganze Atmosphäre um diese sehr liebevolle Lokalbahn noch um so uhriger.
Geplant war es, die Triebwagen in einem ersten Durchgang nebenherfahrend aufzunehmen und dann eine Tour mitzufahren. Leider kam es nicht mehr dazu und es bleib bei den Außenaufnahmen im dichten Schneetreiben.
Diese Bahn gilt als die steilste Adhäsionsbahn der Welt und wurde 1897 als Schmalspurbahn in 1000mm Spurweite ausgeführt. Seit 2009 ist die Trasse auf 900mm umgespurt und mit der Linzer Straßenbahn verknüpft.
Die Aufnahmen der Triebwagen in der Talstation am Anfang des Beitrages haben Seltenheitswert. Diese Station wird heute nicht mehr verwendet und beinhaltet ein Museum über diese wunderschön geführte Lokalbahn.

On December 18th, 2005, we are going on an excursion to the Pöstlingbergbahn in Linz, suddenly a snowstorm breaks in. This makes the whole atmosphere around this very affectionate local train even more cosy.
It was planned to pick up the railcars in a first run and then go on a tour. Unfortunately it didn't happen anymore and the outdoor shots stayed in the dense snow.
This railway is regarded as the steepest adhesion railway in the world and was built in 1897 as a narrow gauge railway with 1000mm gauge. Since 2009, the track has been re-tracked to 900mm and connected to the Linz tramway.
The pictures of the railcars in the valley station at the beginning of the article are rare. This station is no longer used today and contains a museum about this beautifully guided local railway.

Die ursprünglich mit 1000mm Spurweite gebaute Schmalspurbahn verkehrte bis 18907 bis 2008 vom Bergbahnhof Urfahr (Linz) auf den Pöstlingberg. Sie ist mit bis zu 116 %o eine der steilsten Adhäsionsbahnen der Welt.
In den Jahren 2008 bis 2009 wurde die Bahn modernisiert auf 900mm umgespurt, in das Strassenbahnnetz von Linz eingebunden und bis zum Hauptplatz geführt.
