New York City-Off The Beaten Path (with Facts/Figures)

I took a bite out of The Big Apple by visiting places in New York City that many tourists may not be aware of but should be. Of course, I did start out in Times Square (which once had 132 brothels in the area!) which is high on any tourist's list but after that, I saw many lesser known attractions which I thought were pretty cool, like the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower building, the David N. Dinkins Municipal building, historic Trinity Church (where George Washington prayed), the Flatiron building, the High Line, Columbus Circle, Lincoln Center, Plaza Hotel (where the Beatles stayed and Kevin McCallister stayed in Home Alone 2), FAO Schwartz toy store (which is no longer open), Fifth Avenue shops for the rich and famous, Trump Tower, Carnegie Hall, the One57 building, St. Bart's Church, the Waldorf Astoria hotel, the 8 Spruce St. building, and the United Nations. Included are 16 systems within North America that I have been to and filmed. Wikipedia was used to provide data such as daily ridership, length, number of stations, opening year, and interesting facts. Please note that ridership can vary depending on the year and the years used for ridership are not consistent for this video.

As pointed out Vancouver was left out: I originally did not think of it as a metro but on closer thought it should be in the list since it shares a lot of characteristics of one.

What constitutes a subway or metro is also challenging as some systems do not have the traditional characteristics of a subway. Based on what Wikipedia claims and whether the trains resemble an actual subway train: the following metro/subway systems where used for this video: Boston, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, San Juan, Los Angeles, Toronto, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Miami, Atlanta, Cleveland, PATH (New Jersey), Mexico City and Montreal.

-Since San Juan is part of the United States it is counted as a system in North America.

-data is up to date for 2018 - there are expansions happening across many systems in North America and thus stations, system length, and ridership is subject to change (but perhaps that is why you like the system? Because its expanding?).

Central Park is an urban park in Manhattan, New York City. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, and one of the most filmed locations in the world.

The park was established in 1857 on 778 acres of city-owned land. In 1858, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, a landscape architect and an architect, respectively, won a design competition to improve and expand the park with a plan they titled the Greensward Plan. Construction began the same year and the park's first area was opened to the public in the winter of 1858. Construction continued during the American Civil War farther north, and was expanded to its current size of 843 acres in 1873.

Central Park was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1962. The Park, managed for decades by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, is currently managed by the Central Park Conservancy under contract with the municipal government in a public-private partnership. The Conservancy is a non-profit organization that contributes 75 percent of Central Park's $65 million annual budget and is responsible for all basic care of the 843-acre park.

Walking tour of The High Line in Manhattan, New York City 【4K】

The High Line is located on the west side of Manhattan. It runs from 34th St in Chelsea through Gansevoort St in Meatpacking District. Walked the entire 1.45 miles of this former railroad converted into an elevated park.

May this sinister act never be repeated to our Country Again!

The September 11 attacks resulted in 2,996 immediate (attack time) deaths: 2,977 victims and the 19 hijackers. A total of 372 foreign nationals (excluding the 19 perpetrators) perished in the attacks, representing just over 12% of the total. The immediate deaths include 246 victims on the four planes (from which there were no survivors), 2,606 in New York City in the World Trade Center and on the ground, and 125 at the Pentagon. About 292 people were killed at street level by burning debris and falling bodies of those who had jumped or fallen from the World Trade Center's windows.

Greenwich Village is a small area below 14th Street and west of Broadway. It is famous to have been the home to rebels, nonconformists, beatniks, bohemians and starving artists for over 100 years now. New York Habitat ( ) offers features today a video tour of this great area.

Starting in the late 1800s, Greenwich Village became the epicenter of art and music in New York. Artists and musicians from all over flocked to the Village where they found camaraderie, inspiration and affordable housing. The paths of many famous musicians' writers and actors passed through the eclectic streets of Greenwich Village including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Allen Poe, and Mark Twain.

Washington Square Park:
A great place to start our tour of Greenwich Village is Washington Square Park. It is home of the famous Washington Square Arch, which was built in the late 1800s to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president of the United States.

The interesting thing about Greenwich Village is that the starving artists were the ones who brought charm and appeal to the area. Ultimately the very appeal they created started attracting wealthier New Yorkers, which drove the prices up and, eventually, caused most starving artists to relocate elsewhere in the city.

Luckily, the charm remains strong in the Village and it's a great place to rent a furnished apartment during your next trip to New York. New York Habitat has tons of apartments throughout the Village and all over New York City.

MacDougal Street is a one-way street about 6 blocks long in Greenwich Village. It has been the subject of many songs and poems. It's been frequented by numerous famous individuals including Bob Dylan, Matthew Broderick and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Cafe Wha? - at 115 Macdougal Street
Located at 115 Macdougal Street, Cafe Wha? is a club in Greenwich Village that has been home to various musicians and comedians.

West 4th Street Courts:
At the West 4th Street Courts, also known as The Cage, you will find some of the finest street ball players in the country.

The Speakeasy - 106 Perry Street
In the time of Prohibition back in the 1920's, secret bars known as speakeasies sprung up all over the city. Many were located right here in Greenwich Village. American author Henry Miller opened a short-lived speakeasy in the basement of his home at 106 Perry St.

The Friends Building - 90 Bedford Street
If the names Joey, Monica, Chandler, Ross, Rachel and Phoebe mean anything to you, make sure you visit the corner of Bedford St. & Grove St. in Greenwich Village to pay homage to the Friends' Building. This is the building where the Friends supposedly lived in the hit sitcom we all know and love. In fact, before the producers decided on the title Friends, the working title of the show was Once Upon a Time in the Village.

Narrowest House in NYC -- 75 ½ Bedford St
Coming in at nine and a half feet wide, you'll find the narrowest house in NYC at 75 ½ Bedford St. The Pulitzer Prize winning poet Edna St. Vincent Millay lived there for a short while.

Lincoln Tunnel - Entering Manhattan (NYC)

The Lincoln Tunnel is an approximately 1.5-mile-long (2.4 km) set of three tunnels under the Hudson River, connecting Weehawken, New Jersey and Midtown Manhattan in New York City. An integral conduit within the New York Metropolitan Area, it was designed by Norwegian-born civil engineer Ole Singstad and named after U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. It is one of two automobile tunnels built under the river, the other being the Holland Tunnel. The Lincoln Tunnel carries a daily average of approximately 120,000 motor vehicles.
The 8,216-foot (2,504-metre) center tube opened in 1937, followed by the 7,482-foot (2,281-metre) north tube in 1945. The 8,006-foot (2,440-metre) south tube was the last to open, in 1957.
The tunnel is part of NJ 495 on the western half of the river, and the unsigned NY 495 on the eastern half of the river.

Shortly after noon on September 8, 1953, two armed men, Peter Simon and John Metcalf, attempted to rob a home in South Orange, New Jersey. The men were driven off by the residents, one of whom reported the license plate on their car to the police, who put out an alert. A patrolman, Nicholas Falabella, noticed the car just as it passed the toll booth into New York City and ordered the driver to stop the vehicle. The driver sped off into the tunnel, firing at the police. A Port Authority policeman, Donald Lackmun, was hit in the leg. The police commandeered a delivery truck and gave chase, exchanging gunfire with the renegade car while weaving in and out of traffic. In all 28 shots were fired, ten by the gunmen and 18 by the police. The vehicle came to a stop about three-quarters of the way through the tunnel. Simon had taken a bullet to the head.
The tunnel is considered to be one of the most high-risk terrorist target sites in the United States. Other such sites in New Jersey include the Holland Tunnel and PATH station at Exchange Place, both of which are in Jersey City, and the Port of Newark in Elizabeth.
