Laguna San Ignacio - Don Pachico, the Grandfather of Whales
Francisco Pachico Mayoral, of Laguna San Ignacio, Mexico, recently passed away. We miss him greatly. He will always be remembered as a hero of marine conservation, and the Grandfather of Whales. Our condolences to his amazing family who are a testament to his quiet strength and vision of a world in which encounters with wild animals were something that everyone should experience.

Gray Whales of San Ignacio Lagoon
In February, 2016, my grandson, Gus, and I traveled to San Ignacio Lagoon, a sacred and protected place in Baja where the great gray whales come each year to mate, calve and raise their babies until they can make the long journey to Alaska where they feed before returning again to the warm waters of the lagoon. Baja Ecotours took us to the remarkable Campo Cortez, totally powered by solar and wind, handmade tortilla and fresh caught fish, little cabins overlooking the lagoon, and even hot showers and flush toilets... Not to mention mangroves and hundreds of species of birds and fish... But, communing with the 'friendly whales' is an experience like none other. It transformed my grandson and me.
The Gray Whales of San Ignacio Lagoon Mexico Aerial Drone View
This short aerial film shows the very friendly and playful side of these gentle giants. Here is a mother gray whale and baby calf reaching out to us in the boat for attention. They absolutely love to be touched and rubbed. This experience is truly magical and if you ever have the opportunity, this will be a lifelong memory. This footage was captured while Sky High Videography was on location in San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja Mexico with London based, Windfall Films and Pachicos Eco Tours. This footage and other will be a part of a PBS nature series. This episode will feature whales and dolphins and should air next year. Once back in studio, Sky High Videography will be producing its own series of films from this and other footage captured during a month long trek through Baja California Sur Mexico this April.
The Whales of San Ignacio
San Ignacio Lagoon, in Mexico, is a haven for whale watching. Mamma whales bring their babies right up to the whale-watching boats to be petted by those of us lucky enough to be there. My wife, Liza, and I visited the lagoon in February 2017; this is a record of our visit.

Gray Whale Bumps Our Panga
3. March 2014. Mexico. San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California. We were enjoying the calm waters in the lagoon when a mama gray whale decided to toy with us. Jesus from Pachico's Eco Tours was in a neighboring boat, and recorded this for us.
