The steamship CHENA of the Alaska Steamship Company fleet in shipboard ceremonies May 6, 1965, received the highest honor given to U. S. flag vessels for performance demonstrating safety training and discipline -- the ship safety achievement award. This annual award is sponsored jointly by the Marine Section of the National Safety Council and the American Merchant Marine Institute.
Rear Admiral R. [Richard] D. Schmidtman, USCG, Commander of the 13th Coast Guard District, made the presentation, which included a Green Cross of Safety pennant, to be flown by the ship for one year, and individual certificates for each member of the crew serving aboard at the time.
D. E. Skinner, president of the Alaska Steamship, accepted the certificate on behalf of Captain Merrill D. Stewart, who was master of the CHENA when the action which led to the award took place. He is now commander of the Alaska Line motorship TANANA.
Captain Erling P. Brastad, present master of the CHENA, received the award for his ship. The basis of the presentation was the outstanding feat of ship-saving and life-saving performed by the master and the crew of the CHENA when she was caught at Valdez on March 27, 1964, near the epicenter of the most devastating earthquake-seismic wave action in the history of the United States.
The Chena was lifted 30 to 50 feet in the air, then dropped, rolled on the bottom, where a moment before the dock had been, was lifted and dropped again and again as the water rose and fell. She was spun around and carried broadside into the beach -- totally helpless -- and that's where she would be today, a monument to nature's destructive force, had it not been for the immediate, effective and outstanding response of her personnel, who not only saved the ship and her crew from destruction but aided the Town of Valdez in providing the only communication service available until Army forces arrived and other channels were opened.
In attendance at the ceremony were high-ranking officers of the 13th Coast Guard District and representatives of the Maritime Administration.

Southern Pacific 4449 Glides thru the Ft. Peck Indian Reservation headed to events back east in July 2009. It is the only surviving example of Southern Pacific Railroad's (SP) GS-4 class of steam locomotives. The GS-4 is a streamlined 4-8-4 (Northern) type GS stands for Golden State (a nickname for California or General Service. The locomotive was built by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio, for SP in May 1941; it received the Red and Orange Daylight paint scheme for the passenger trains of the same name which it hauled for most of its service career. 4449 was retired from revenue service in 1957 and put on static display in Oaks Park, Portland, Oregon, the following year, where it remained until 1974. It was restored to operation for use in the second American Freedom Train, which toured the 48 contiguous United States for the American Bicentennial celebrations. Since then, 4449 has been operated in excursion service throughout the continental US; based at the Brooklyn roundhouse in Portland where it is maintained by a group of dedicated volunteers called Friends of SP 4449. Placed into service on May 30, 1941, assigned to the Coast Daylight, SP's premier passenger train between San Francisco and Los Angeles, 4449 was semi-retired from service on September 24, 1956, then donated to the city of Portland, Oregon, on April 24, 1958 where it was placed on outdoor public display in Oaks Park.. BELLINGHAM -- Matt Krogh will present Coal at Cherry Point: Local Battle, Global Fallout as part of Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17 in Academic West room 204.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
Bellingham and the region are embroiled in a conversation about exporting publicly-owned coal to Asia. This local battle over the proposed site for the largest coal export terminal in North America is the fulcrum for decisions that will affect people across the state, the region, and even the globe. Krogh deals with these issues every day and will talk about the challenges and rewards of his battle against coal at Cherry Point.
Krogh is the North Sound Baykeeper at RE Sources for Sustainable Communities, and the northwest Washington director of the Power Past Coal coalition. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Western's Huxley College of the Environment in Environmental Science and Geography, respectively. The winter quarter Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series will feature distinguished alumni of Huxley.
Anyone interested in these topics is encouraged to come and participate; the presentation will include a question-and-answer period. The speaker series is held by Western's Huxley College of the Environment to bring together the environmentally minded community and other interested members of the Western and Bellingham communities. Speakers address topics of contemporary environmental concern in the region and the world.

My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
