Ancient Pagodas around Hanoi: Nom Pagoda, But Thap Pagoda, Dau Pagoda, Co Loa Temple Complex
Nom Pagoda:
Located 30-km east of Hanoi, Nom pagoda belongs to the historic relic in Nom village, Dai Dong Commune, Van Lam District, and is a famous pagoda in Pho Hien old town for its old architectural features.
According to an ancient legend, Nom pagoda was built among the old pine forest, so the pagoda known as Linh thông cổ tự. It is unclear when it was built, but the stele at the pagoda says that it was erected in 1680 and restored many times.
But Thap Pagoda:
But Thap pagoda is considered one of the most common attractions near Hanoi. The pagoda is situated in But Thap village in Bac Ninh province; and very famous for having unique ancient architecture, which is the sophisticated combination between Vietnamese culture and Chinese culture.
The pagoda was built in 13th century, in Tran Dynasty, but was rebuilt in 17th century in Ly Dynasty. In 17th, the pagoda was reconstructed under management of a Chinese monk and Queen Trinh Thi Ngoc Truc, a daughter of Lord Trinh Trang. Therefore, the architecture of But Thap pagoda is a combination between Vietnamese and Chinese style.
The most outstanding part of the pagoda is Bao Nghiem tower or But Thap; hence the pagoda was named after the name of this tower.
Dau Pagoda:
Dau Pagoda, located in Thuan Thanh district, Bac Ninh province, is considered the oldest Buddhist pagoda in Vietnam according to researchers. The pagoda is about 1 hour away from Hanoi Old Quarter, making it easy for a morning trip off the city noise.
In the past, the region where Dau Pagoda was built today was the capital of Giao Chi district, the political, economic and cultural center of Vietnam. About 1,800 years ago, the Indian monk named Khau Da La came to this area to do the missionary work and founded the first Buddhism center in Vietnam called Luy Lau. There were many pagodas, citadels and market built in the area at that time and Dau Pagoda was among them.
Co Loa Temple Complex
The Co Loa Temple Complex forms part of the Citadel of the same name. The principal temple, Den An Duong Vuong, faces a refurbished lake, with a graceful stele-house to one side. Inside the rebuilt temple, a sixteenth-century black-bronze statue of the king resides on the main altar, resplendent in his double crown, while a subsidiary altar is dedicated to Kim Quy, the Golden Turtle. More interesting, however, is the second group of buildings, 100m north of the archer, where a large, walled courtyard contains a beautifully simple open-sided hall, furnished with huge, ironwood pillars, and containing some of the archeological finds. Next door is the princess’s small temple, Den My Chau. Sadly, it’s all new concrete, but inside she is still honoured in the surprising form of a dumpy, armchair-shaped stone clothed in embroidered finery and covered in jewels but lacking a head.

VIETNAM BUDDHISM: Bang pagoda ( Hanoi capital)
Buddhism in Vietnam (Vietnamese: 'đạo Phật or Phật giáo') as practiced by the ethnic Vietnamese is mainly of the Mahayana tradition. Buddhism may have first come to Vietnam as early as the 3rd or 2nd century BC from South Asia or from China in the 1st or 2nd century AD. Vietnamese Buddhism has had a symbiotic relationship with certain elements of Taoism, Chinese spirituality, and the Vietnamese folk religion.
But Thap Pagoda - Chùa Bút Tháp
But Thap Pagoda on the bank of Duong River, Bac Ninh Province was reconstructed in the 17th century by the monk Zhus Zhus (regarded as the founder of the pagoda) and Queen Trinh Thi Ngoc Truc, a daughter of Lord Trinh Trang. In the Nei Kung Wai Kwo architectural style, But Thap Pagoda has the shape of the Chinese script Kung inside and the script Kwo outside.
The pagoda features more than 100 compartments and 10 buildings spread over 100 meters from the three-entrance gate to the bell-tower and back house. Inside the temple are more than 50 statues in different sizes and the most remarkable is thousand-hands, thousand-eyes Goddess of Mercy (Guanyin in Chinese) made in 1656 and took several years for completion. Behind the backyard garden stand two stone stupas of the monk Zhus Zhus and Minh Hanh. Once visiting in 1876, the King Tu Duc saw the stone stupa's shape like a pen and named this pagoda But Thap.

But Thap pagoda: Situated on the dike south of the Duong River in Thuan Thanh District, Bac Ninh Province is But Thap (pen stupa), one of the finest pagodas in the country's north and known as Vietnam's first Buddhist center.
Dong Ho painting is printed by hand on the surface of wooden plate. Each printing color has its own engraved board. The black one is printed last. Thanks to this way, paintings are made in bulk and do not require sophisticated techniques.
