The Beautiful Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai Thailand
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a popular temple in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.
It's often referred to as 'Doi Suthep' although this is actually the name of the mountain it's located on. I'm pretty sure I made that mistake too:)
Within the site are pagodas, statues, bells, a museum, and shrines - and it's a sacred site to many Thai locals.
I've been to my fair share of temples in Thailand, but this is one of the more memorable ones.
There are two ways to get to the temple. From the base, you can either take a tram or if you're up for it you can climb 309 steps.
In addition to the temple's beauty, there are some pretty impressive views of Chiang Mai at the very top.

Visit Doi Suthep the most famous temple in Chiang Mai, located 3,500 feet above sea level. With the 306 steps to the temple which guarded by two splendid Nagas (serpents). It was built in 1383, is the symbol of Chiang Mai. It is the sacred temple and contains the holy relic of the Lord Buddha which is enshrined in the magnificent golden pagoda. A panoramic view of the city and the surrounding countryside can be seen from the temple grounds.
Then to Bua Thong Waterfall, a small and beautiful, multi-tiered waterfall made of limestone and mineral deposits. Thailand's dreamy north has national parks galore and tons of amazing day trips to take from Chiang Mai. Our first stop on our hidden Thailand road trip is Doi Inthanon National Park, Thailand's tallest peak.
On the way, we stop by Pha Chor, an orange canyon located about an hour outside of the city. It's an easy, perfect little pit stop before we continue on our way to the Mae Ya Waterfall.
Though Doi Inthanon National Park has many waterfalls, Mae Ya is easily one of the most beautiful, the largest, and the most impressive. It's also the least crowded since it takes an extra 40 minutes to drive to from the park entrance, but it's worth it!
Finally, we finish at the King and Queen Pagodas near the top of Doi Inthanon after a gorgeous drive.
Check out the associated blog post for more information on the beautiful hidden parts of Thailand, accessible by day trip from Chiang Mai.
