Troodos Ekklisies (Cyprus) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Troodos Ekklisies in Cypress.
Cypress, the third largest island in the Mediterranean that, due to its proximity to the Holy Land, was one of the first countries to which Christianity was introduced. With their well preserved churches, the Troodos Mountains are located in the heart of the country. In Pedoulas, a small village in the Marathasa region, is the Archangel Michael Church that dates back to the fifteenth century. From the outside the church looks like a barn but inside are a number of colourful Byzantine wall paintings. Referred to as ‘barn-roof churches’ the buildings often served as a refuge for persecuted Christians and as a hiding place for those art treasures threatened by iconoclasm. Some distance from the village of Platanistasa, the Stavros Tou Agiasmati Church stands alone amid a forested mountain landscape. In around 1500 A.D., Philippos Goul painted the internal walls which once belonged to a monastery, long since decayed. On the Troodos Mountains the guardians of faith, history and tradition most certainly found fulfillment in their quest for peace, sanctity and silence.

Byzantine Church: The Church of The Holy Cross of Ayiasmati, Plantanistasa, Troodos, Cyprus
In the central part of Cyprus, in the mountains of the Troodos range, some of the most important monuments of the history of Byzantine painting have survived. These are the painted churches which have to this day preserved brilliant examples of various trends of Byzantine and post-Byzantine monumental art, from the 11th to the 19th century. Ten of these churches have been so far granted World Cultural Heritage status by UNESCO.
The church of Timios Stavros tou Agiasmati is situated in the eastern part of the Troodos mountain range, in the area of Pitsilia, about five kilometers northeast of the village of Platanistasa. In 1985 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List which includes nine other painted Byzantine churches of the Troodos range.
This church used to be the katholicon (monastery church) of a monastery bearing the same name, built towards the end of the 15th century. When Vassili Barsky, a Russian monk, visited the island in 1735, the monastery was almost abandoned and inhabited by only one monk (who was also the abbot) and a servant. According to researchers, the name 'Agiasmati' derives from the word 'Agiasma' (-atos) (sanctified water, spring or well near a church). Another interpretation is that the name is related to Agiasmati in western Asia Minor, a place related to the capture of Constantinople in 1453. It might be the case that refugees from the above area took shelter in Cyprus and later founded a monastery with the same name in the mountains of Cyprus, in commemoration of their homeland. As far as the rest of the monastic buildings are concerned, only traces of the cells survive to the south of the church.
The church is a single-aisled building with a steep-pitched timber roof covered with flat tiles. The roof extends beyond the main structure to form a portico on all four sides, a feature that is unique in Cyprus. According to an inscription, which survives on the exterior north wall above the entrance, the building was erected with the donation of a priest named Petros Peratis and his wife Pepani. Both of them are depicted on a wall-painting on the south exterior wall, offering a model of the church to Jesus with the mediation of the Virgin. The year of the church's erection is not known, but it is generally accepted that its decoration was completed in 1494. This indirectly indicates a date for the construction of the church.
The interior of the church, including the tie beams that support the wooden roof, is completely painted. These wall paintings are of particular interest since they represent a mixture of Palaiologan and local naive art, blended with Italian Renaissance influences. The painter was Philippos Goul, a hellenised Syrian Orthodox with good education. Even though his mastery of each style is different, the general impression is pleasant and sometimes quite impressive. Goul also painted the church of Agios Mamas in the village of Louvaras.
The paintings unfold in two tiers. In the upper tier multi-person scenes from the New Testament are depicted, whilst the lower tier is decorated with individual figures. The narrative cycle of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, to which the church is dedicated, is located in miniature paintings on the north blind arch. On the bema's apse, the Virgin in the type of Vlachernitissa is depicted.
Wall-paintings also survive on the external face of the west and south walls. The extensive and multi-person Last Judgment scene, which unfolds up to the far end of the gable where Jesus Christ is depicted, is worth mentioning.
Omodos village and Troodos Mountains, Cyprus - Unravel Travel TV
Omodos is a charming little village in the mountains and while it attracts a lot of holidaymakers, it still retains a character and traditions. Its also a great place to eat, drink and shop. Omodos is best known to be the wine centre of the inland region. A festival is usually celebrated during the month of August and they have a large religious event on the month of September.
In the centre of this village lies the Monastery of the Holy Cross, which contains an alleged fragment of the Holy Rood the cross on which Christ was crucified and brought to Cyprus by St Helen in 327 AD.
The skull of St Philip, the fifth Apostle, is also there and its preserved in a silver casket. Religious, cultural and thrivin. Here you'll find plenty of local crafts like leather bags, belts and clothes, pottery, copperware and lace.
Tourists are generally very familiar with the beaches and the coastal resorts but many are unaware that there is a stunning inland with mountains, pine forests and waterfalls this area is a paradise for nature and outdoor lovers. For the sun worshipper leaving the beaches and the bars isn't easy but you'll be rewarded for your willpower if you drive up into the Troodos Mountains. Despite being a huge fan of beaches, I was most impressed with the inland. This is where you get a taste of the real Cyprus.
Some people of course rather mountains to sea and there are places here like New Helvetia Hotel where you can have a romantic wedding reception and intimate setting.

Kykkos Monastery & Kakopetria
Travel through the beautiful Troodos Mountains, explore some of the most picturesque and traditional villages and visit the richest and most miraculous monastery of Cyprus!
Our first stop is Kakopetria, where you will get the chance to walk around the quaint little village known for its running waters and mini waterfall and mingle with the friendly locals. Driving through mountains, we then stop at Throni, which is located on the top of the mountain amongst a beautiful pine forest. This location offers breathtaking and scenic views of Troodos Mountains. There you will also have the chance to visit the tomb of Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus.
We then drive to Kykkos Monastery, founded by the Byzantines in 1092. Kykkos is dedicated to Virgin Mary and it is the richest monastery on the island. It also possesses one of the three surviving icons painted by Saint Luke.
The miraculous icon, which is covered in silver gilt and enclosed in a shrine of tortoise shell and mother-of-pearl, holds an eminent position in the church. Free time will be given to visit the monastery and to have lunch (optional extra).
NOTE: Visitors must dress appropriately when visiting religious places. No tank tops or shorts allowed for men and women!

Panagia Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery, Cyprus 2014
By the way, the name of the monastery means in the translation, the monastery is dedicated to Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate.
As usual with photographers, you try to reach the destination before sunrise to use the best light of the day. So I arrived at the large entrance gate at about 6:00 a.m. In the monastery courtyard I heard the chant of the pre-prayers from the church, the Holy Mass had already begun. So I looked around in the monastery courtyard and took some photos of the buildings.
Then I noticed a monk coming up to me from the church. After a short presentation on my part as a photographer, the monk invited me for a coffee after the Mass and went back to the church. What I did not know, the monk was Father Dionysus, the abbot of the monastery and at the same time the only monk who has lived in this monastery for 45 years.
Father Dionysus later told me at a Cyprus Coffee that the good condition of the whole monastery is due to the support with the AG Leventis Foundation and he is very grateful for this cooperation.
The Village Panagia next to the Monastery is the place where former Archbishop Makarios was born and lived with the family.
The Historical Monastery is a very small and quiet place. The daily tourist flow starts around 9:00 a.m. and lasts until late afternoon. The central point of contact for many Orthodox Christians is the historic church. Many interesting details that the monastery has to offer are unfortunately hidden from tourists due to the narrow time windows of their guides.
My recommendation, therefore, take the time to visit and enjoy all the nooks and crannies of the monastery. The abbot father Dionysus is very open to interested visitors and is happy to answer your questions personally.
Don't miss the visit of the monastery's own wine production with wine cellar, the large library with countless icons, a conference center with picture exhibition, the private room for prayer of the late Archbishop Makarios, who is from the village of Panagia Comes.
Twice a week there are also workshops for icon painting, with one of the best icon painters in Cyprus. And if you just want to have something contemplative and enjoy the silence, you are also in good hands there. In front of the monastery there is a restaurant with a viewing platform, but only in summer.

Cyprus Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Cyprus.
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, with a long history and rich cultural heritage. Lefkosia, or, Nicosia, is the capital with an almost circular old town that is completely surrounded by walls from the Venetian period. Fammagusta Gate is one of the town’s original three gates which leads to the Tacht El-Kala district with its many narrow alleys, small buildings and handicraft studios. Nicosia’s largest church is the Phaneromeni Church and its elegant Venetian bell tower. Next to it, one of the town’s smallest mosques and the prosaic construction of the modern Moronite Church beyond Paphos Gate that leads out of the historic centre. The port of Larnaca is considered to be the gateway to the island. A well-renovated Turkish fortress was originally built to defend the city and it was subsequently used as a prison. Close to Larnaca is a huge salt lake which, in winter, is populated by hundreds of pink flamingos. The mountain village of Lefkara is situated within the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Narrow cobbled alleys separate the stately buildings of solid stone blocks with ornate door frames and wrought iron balconies. The Church of the Archangel Michael, located in the centre, contains various wall paintings that date back to the twelfth century. The ‘islands of the gods’ resembles a magnificent picture book, a melting pot of various influences at the intersection of both Orient and Occident. Cyprus is synonymous with myth, legend, treasures, culture and very large doses of sunshine!

Nicosia
Nicosia (/ˌnɪkəˈsiːə/ NIK-ə-SEE-ə; Greek: Λευκωσία; IPA:[lefkoˈsi.a], Turkish: Lefkoşa) is the capital and largest city on the island of Cyprus, as well as its main business centre. It is located near the centre of the Mesaoria plain, on the banks of the River Pedieos.
Nicosia is the capital and seat of government of the Republic of Cyprus. It is the southeasternmost capital of the EU member states. The northern part of the city functions as the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a disputed region recognized only by Turkey, and which the international community recognises as Cypriot territory under Turkish occupation, and has done so since the Turkish invasion in 1974.
