Cluj-Napoca, City in Romania
Cluj-Napoca, a city in northwestern Romania, is the unofficial capital of the Transylvania region. It's home to universities, vibrant nightlife and landmarks dating to Saxon and Hungarian rule. Surrounding its central square, Piața Unirii, is the Gothic-style St. Michael's Church and a dramatic statue of the 15th-century king Matthias Corvinus. The baroque-era Bánffy Palace is now a museum showcasing Romanian art.

Minister's departure fails to stop Romania demos
(9 Feb 2017) Freezing temperatures did not stop thousands of Romanians in embarking on their tenth consecutive day of protest in front of the government building in Bucharest.
Demonstrators gathered on Thursday night, demanding the resignation of Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu and his government.
Romania's justice minister resigned Thursday following mass protests over a law that eases criminal penalties for government officials engaged in corruption.
His departure did not appear to have much effect on thousands of protesters who protested in Victory Square, lighting up high-rise buildings in the square with the protest slogans #exist and #resist, waving Romanian flags and yelling Resignation!
A smaller crowd of government supporters also gathered outside the presidential palace to rail at President Klaus Iohannis, who is a supporter of the anti-corruption fight.

Romania: Thousands demand resignation of PM despite repeal of corruption decree
Thousands of protesters held fast in their protest for the tenth night in a row outside the Cabinet Office in Bucharest, Thursday, demanding the resignation of Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu, following last week's withdrawal of a controversial decree that would have decriminalised some cases of official corruption.
The protesters rallied in Bucharest despite the government's decision to officially repeal the controversial emergency ordinance. Many of the protesters expressed that the measures taken by the government last week were not sufficient and that the people had no more trust in the government who came to power last December. Earlier in the day, Romania's Justice Minister Florin Iordache resigned following mass anti-government protests over the corruption decree.
The decree had sparked huge, sustained and sometime violent protests with hundreds of thousands of protesters descending on Bucharest's Victory Square for ten consecutive days. The order would haven seen the decriminalising of abuse-of-power offences that involve sums of money less than 200,000 lei (€44,475 / $48,000). Romania has had 1,170 cases of abuse in office over the last three years, amounting to close to a billion euros worth of damage, according to anti-corruption chief prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi.
SOT, Protester (Romanian): This is better supplied than under [Nicolae] Ceausescu. Just imagine how people would have queued up if back then they had bananas, apples and juice in storage. This is a proof of solidarity. This is the spirit of the communion. Not communism but communion.

We naturally have a great interest in both citizens being freed. The Foreign Ministry is undertaking everything that is within our possibilities but unfortunately the situation is unchanged. Regarding Germany's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, and the decision will be today, we want to use this seat to increase our influence, first of all on the UN reforms which have now have been worked on for a long time already, and also to work constructively and creatively with the chairman of the General Assembly who naturally first of all is responsible for them. And, second, we believe that as the German Federal Republic we are in a position to better influence many peacemaking and conflict resolution processes if we can work for the two years in the Security Council as a non-permanent member. We have shown in many areas that we are ready for that, Germany is a major donor in the framework of the United Nations and would like to also bring its political weight to bear there as well for more peace and security in the world.

STORYLINE
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that the expulsion of hundreds of Romanian Roma from France would not influence the decision about whether Romania could join Europe's visa-free travel zone.
Merkel arrived in Romania late on Monday after a visit to neighbouring Bulgaria. Both countries joined the EU in 2007, but their justice systems have been marred by accusations of corruption. They are both still monitored by the bloc.
In Bucharest, Merkel met with Prime Minister Emil Boc and President Traian Basescu.
The recent expulsions of the Gypsies by the French government raised questions over whether European Union member states could block Romania's entry to the Schengen agreement on the grounds that the nation was unable to integrate its own Roma.
The agreement is named after a small town in Luxembourg where it was first signed in 1985.
Merkel said that Romania would be assessed in November on whether it had fulfilled conditions that guaranteed the security of EU borders.
Such countries are allowed to grant EU visas for non-EU citizens.
Merkel says Romania must show visa processing is free from corruption.
The German Chancellor also said that her government was doing everything possible to secure the release two journalists arrested in Iran.
Iran confirmed on Tuesday that it arrested the two German nationals as they approached the home of a woman whose sentence of death-by-stoning on an adultery conviction.
The story has drawn international condemnation of Tehran.
He did not identify them.
