The Grand Ducal Palace (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogleche Palais, French: Palais grand-ducal, German: Großherzogliches Palais) is a palace in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. It is the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and where he performs most of his duties as head of state of the Grand Duchy.
Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Lëtzebuerg, French: Luxembourg, German: Luxemburg), also known as Luxembourg City (Luxembourgish: Stad Lëtzebuerg or d'Stad, French: Ville de Luxembourg, German: Stadt Luxemburg, Luxemburg-Stadt)[pron 2], is the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (also named Luxembourg), and the country's most populous commune. Standing at the confluence of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers in southern Luxembourg, the city lies at the heart of Western Europe, situated 213 km (132 mi) by road from Brussels, 372 km (231 mi) from Paris, and 209 km (130 mi) from Cologne. The city contains Luxembourg Castle, established by the Franks in the Early Middle Ages, around which a settlement developed.
As of January 2018, Luxembourg City had a population of 116,323, which is more than three times the population of the country's second most populous commune (Esch-sur-Alzette).
In 2011, Luxembourg was ranked as having the second highest per capita GDP in the world at $80,119 (PPP), with the city having developed into a banking and administrative centre. In the 2011 Mercer worldwide survey of 221 cities, Luxembourg was placed first for personal safety while it was ranked 19th for quality of living.
Luxembourg is one of the de facto capitals of the European Union (alongside Brussels and Strasbourg), as it is the seat of several institutions, agencies and bodies of the European Union, including the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Auditors, the Secretariat of the European Parliament, the European Investment Bank, the European Investment Fund, and the European Stability Mechanism.

The Grand Ducal Palace (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogleche Palais, French: Palais grand-ducal, German: Großherzogliches Palais) is a palace in Luxembourg City, in southern Luxembourg. As the official residence of the Grand Duke, the palace is used by him in the exercise of his official functions. He and the Grand Duchess, together with their staff, have their offices at the palace, and the state rooms on the first floor are used for a variety of meetings and audiences. On Christmas Eve, the Grand Duke's Christmas message is broadcast from the Yellow Room.
Foreign heads of state are accommodated at the palace, as guests of the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess, during official visits to Luxembourg, and the Ballroom is the setting for state banquets in their honour. Throughout the year, numerous other receptions take place at the palace, such as the New Year's reception given for members of the Government and the Chamber of Deputies.

For the first time since 2015, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa were surrounded by all five of their children and their daughters-in-law to celebrate Luxembourg’s National Day.The National Day is 23 June and marks the Grand Duke’s official birthday – as his actual birthday is on 16 April.As usual, the celebrations started on the day before the actual National Day.On Friday, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa visited Larochette.The Grand Ducal Couple had the opportunity to meet many inhabitants of the city while visiting a daycare centre as well as a youth centre and the old quarter of Larochette.They also attended a multicultural celebration at the end of the afternoon after Grand Duke Henri awarded honorary distinctions.At the same time, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie were making their traditional visit to Esch-Sur-Alzette.They attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial before taking part in the official procession to reach the Town Hall.There, they watched the parade of around forty associations based in Esch-Sur-Alzette.The Hereditary Grand Ducal Couple greeted citizens from the balcony of the Town Hall and attended the Escher Volleksfest, where they lit the traditional campfire of the Luxembourg scouts.Afterwards, both couples went back to Luxembourg City where they were joined by Prince Félix, Princess Claire, Prince Louis, Princess Alexandra and Prince Sébastien to attend the torch lights parade and the traditional fireworks.On Saturday, the entire Grand Ducal Family attended the official civil ceremony at the Philarmonie.During the ceremony, the Grand Duke, the President of the Chamber of Deputies Mars Di Bartolomeo, and Prime Minister Xavier Bettel made speeches and awarded honorary distinctions to prominent figures of the civilian world.In his speech, Grand Duke Henri said: “There are many reasons to celebrate together and especially to be proud of what our country represents today: We are a nation respected for its role in Europe and in the world.We are a multicultural nation, where people from all walks of life live together in an exemplary way.We are an open and modern society, giving a chance to everyone to flourish, whether in professional, social or political life.We are a tolerant nation and respectful of everyone’s dignity.We are a peaceful nation, with little exposure to extremist rhetoric.We are a naturally united nation.” Afterwards, Grand Duke Henri, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie attended the official military parade.Traditionally, only the Grand Duke, the Hereditary Grand Duke, and their spouses attend the military parade, but this year, Prince Sébastien attended, too.After his graduation at the Royal Academy of Sandhurst last year, Prince Sébastien joined the Luxembourg Army as Lieutenant – hence why he was also present at the parade.Prince Sébastien is the second of Grand Duke Hen

STORYLINE:
Guests were arriving on Friday evening for a royal gala dinner at the grand ducal palace in Luxembourg, in honour of newly weds Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg and Belgian Countess Stephanie de Lannoy.
The pair were married at a civil ceremony at Luxembourg City Hall earlier in the day, attended by Guillaume's parents, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchesse Maria Teresa, as well as his siblings and members of Stephanie de Lannoy's family.
The wedding is a two-day affair, including fireworks, concerts, and a further wedding ceremony between the betrothed, a religious ceremony on Saturday morning.
A glittering array of European royalty has been invited to the festivities.
The guest list for the religious ceremony includes kings, queens, princes and princesses from European countries including, among others, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Lichtenstein, Denmark, the Netherlands, Romania, and Britain, which is sending Prince Edward, Queen Elizabeth's youngest child, and his wife, Sophie.
