The Palau Güell (Catalan pronunciation: [pəˈɫaw ˈɣweʎ], English: Güell Palace) is a mansion designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí for the industrial tycoon Eusebi Güell, and built between 1886 and 1888. It is situated in the Carrer Nou de la Rambla, in the El Raval neighbourhood of the city of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Works of Antoni Gaudí.
The home is centered on a main room for entertaining high society guests. Guests entered the home in horse-drawn carriages through the front iron gates, which featured a parabolic arch and intricate patterns of forged iron-work resembling seaweed and in some parts a horsewhip. Animals could be taken down a ramp and kept in the livery stable in the basement where the servants resided, while the guests went up the stairs to the receiving room. The ornate walls and ceilings of the receiving room disguised small viewing windows high on the walls where the owners of the home could view their guests from the upper floor and get a 'sneak peek' before greeting them, in case they needed to adjust their attire accordingly.
The main party room has a high ceiling with small holes near the top where lanterns were hung at night from the outside to give the appearance of a starlit sky.
In 2004, visits by the public were completely suspended due to renovations; some of the stone used in the original construction was weak and has cracked over the years causing structural problems within the building. It is currently completely open with all restoration work completed in April 2011.
It was used in Antonioni's film The Passenger as a backdrop for the first meeting between Jack Nicholson and Maria Schneider.

Welcome to Barcelona!
I just arrived to Barcelona and it has already become my favorite city in the world! This Gaudi-filled city has everything I like - beautiful architecture, amazing beaches, a lively culture, and great food! It's also very compact and walkable which I love. I hate driving ever since traveling around Europe last year and have been craving getting lost in one of these European cities again. I was super jet lagged yesterday so sorry if I sound a little depressing towards the end haha but I'm loving my time in Barcelona! I'll be here for a week so be sure to subscribe to my channel so you don't miss the rest of my Barcelona travel vlogs!
Also follow me on Instagram as I’ll be sharing more pics of my trip on there as well! :)
xx, Karen

// ABOUT ME //
Hi!
My name is Karen Alexandra. I am a Peruvian (born in Lima) raised in the US and currently traveling around the world. I am a dog mom of 2 furry babies- Milo and Mia. My favorite things are the beach, globetrotting, my dogs, photography, green tea, and vegan food (recently turned vegan). My blog's name Little Black Shell is for my love of the beach and seashells. When I was little I would spend hours walking along the coast collecting seashells. I still do this whenever I spend a full day at the beach. It's definitely my happy place!
Apart from being a beach bum I also LOVE to travel and share my experiences with you all on here, Instagram, and the blog! Last year (2016) I embarked on an around-the-world trip that changed my life. Everything I owned fit in a backpack. I only had a few clothes, plane tickets, and a whole lot of wanderlust. I did a full loop around the globe spending a few months in Europe, then South East Asia, and finally going down unda to Australia. Now, 2017, I am embarking on a similar journey again - solo! My love for travel has only grown over the years and so I have made it my mission to spend the rest of my life traveling near and far, exploring every inch of this beautiful planet and sharing the wanderlust with you all!
I hope you enjoy and remember --
* NEVER LET ANYONE STOP YOU FROM DREAMING
* NEVER STOP EXPLORING!
xx Karen
