Si trova sulla costa settentrionale della Sardegna, nelle vicinanze della famosa #Costa Smeralda, in #Gallura, e costituisce il porto di accesso per l'arcipelago di #LaMaddalena.
Sulla costa, da un'estremità all'altra del paese, si susseguono le spiagge alternate a tratti di costa granitica. In corrispondenza del paese, nell'entrata principale venendo da #Olbia si trovano rispettivamente le seguenti spiagge: la Sciumara, seguita subito dopo da una grande costa rocciosa di Acapulco e a seguire le spiaggette di Porto faro, attaccate alla pineta e alla spiaggia di Palau Vecchio. Dopo il porto, e quindi nell'altra metà del paese, troviamo la spiaggia dell'Isolotto spezzata per metà da un'altra grande pineta. Partendo dalla penisola di Coluccia, si trova la spiaggia enorme dell'Isuledda, un lembo di terra sabbiosa spezzato dalla foce del fiume Liscia, di circa 2 chilometri seguito dalla penisoletta omonima. A ridosso di tutte le spiagge è presente una folta e ricca macchia mediterranea composta dall'olivastro, il pino marittimo, il finocchio marino, il mirto, la ginestra, il rosmarino, il finocchietto, la lavanda, il corbezzolo, il lentischio, il cisto marino, l'elicriso, ecc.
Le coste sono frastagliate e rocciose, una grande pineta si trova nella spiaggia di #Palau Vecchio e un'altra di uguale misura situata nelle colline sovrastanti il paese.
Poco fuori dal paese è situata la fortezza di monte Altura, una fortezza militare sopraelevata che serviva come punto di vista panoramica dell'intera zona marina circostante, costruita in due anni tra il 1887-1889 e visitabile dai turisti. Sempre in zona Punta Sardegna si trova #PortoRafael, ampia zona fitta di macchia mediterranea dove si trova un importante porto per yacht e numerose ville blindate di personaggi importanti.
Nei pressi del paese si trova la roccia dell'Orso, una collina granitica di 122 metri modellata dagli agenti atmosferici, famosa per la sua forma di orso e visitata ogni anno da migliaia di persone; l'orso è raffigurato come stemma comunale del paese. Tolomeo, nelle sue cartografie denominava il sito della roccia Arcti Promontoria: questo nome è spesso tradotto come promontori dell'orso (supponendo che arcti sia genitivo di arctŏs, nome della costellazione dell'Orsa), ma potrebbe significare promontori stretti (arctus vuol dire stretto, angusto).

Roccia dell'Orso is a wind shaped rock on a top of a hill next to the village of Palau in Sardinia.
The shape of the stone resembles a bear and is only visible from a narrow angle, which we where not allowed to use when we went there.
Its considered a natural monument. It is formed due to corrosion caused in time by water and wind. There is an entry fee of 3 euros to be paid at the entrance and there are a few steps to climb to get to the top. You can also buy basic souvenirs at the entrance.
From the top you can have a panoramic view over the village of Palau, Isola La Maddalena and the surroundings.

Costa Paradiso, or Paradise Coast, is self-explanatory. It is on the central northern coast of the island, with eight kilometres of characteristic red rocks shaped by the elements and transformed into the most beautiful natural sculptures. The crystal clear turquoise transparency of the sea, fine white sandy beaches and the many greens of the surrounding countryside make it truly idyllic.
One of the most wonderful beaches in Sardinia can be found here, Li Cossi, framed in pink granite rock formations. Further south, under a mountain of the same name, is Tinnari beach, with a double arch sculptured in the rocks and figures that set the imagination roaming. The rock changes colour during the day, and is a true spectacle, as well as a perfect setting for photography enthusiasts. It is also a paradise for snorkelling, with transparent emerald green water and many coves and seabeds to explore. There is a small village called Costa Paradiso, close to Castelsardo and the small centres of Costa Tinnari and Isola Rossa. It is prevalently an area of villas or holiday homes with swimming pools and architecture designed to blend into the landscape. One of the lovely aspects of this special Italian island is that developments have mostly been designed with great respect to the environment, creating the best possible impact and complimenting, not ruining the landscape, a dreadful mistake that has been repeatedly made in other parts of the Mediterranean. There are some eyesores on the island, but many coastal areas have been developed with great taste, elegance and respect for nature. Many of the villas on Costa Paradiso are situated just a few metres from the sea. There are bars, restaurants, supermarkets and shops in the area, as well as a medical centre, piano bars and clubs for a thriving nightlife. Sports facilities include tennis courts and equestrian centres, and for watersports lovers, surfing, diving and sailing are all available. Costa Paradiso can be easily reached by ferry to Olbia, Golfo Aranci or Porto Torres. During the summer season, there are frequent express ferries from the mainland, that take just a few hours to make the enjoyable crossing to Sardinia. The airports of Olbia and Alghero are also close, and an easy solution for visitors to the area. Once discovered, the Costa Paradiso is a place people come back to, time after time.

Italy Holiday in Sardinia - Hotel Mercure Olbia
Sardinia - Sardegna in Italian - is a large island in the Mediterranean to the west of Italy. It has a mountainous interior and a famed coastline with turquoise waters which attracts throngs of holiday-makers every year. The island is a region of Italy, and its regional capital is Cagliari, on the southern coast. With three international airports and ferries from mainland Italy, it is a very accessible tourist destination.
The island has a long and intriguing history, and is dotted with interesting archaeological sites. In the Bronze Age the island was populated by an enigmatic people who built nuraghi - stone towers - across the island, along with palaces, sacred wells and other structures. Many remain, as ruins, and the importance of these sites is recognised with a UNESCO World Heritage listing. As Sardinia is on Mediterranean trading routes, various subsequent civilisations colonised or conquered the coastal areas, including the Phoenicians, Romans and Byzantines. Later the island was for some time under Spanish domination. A version of Catalan is still spoken in Alghero. The mountains inland, difficult to conquer and offering little to invaders, have a reputation as untouched pockets of ancient culture and tradition.
Sardinia has a dual reputation within Italy. It is one of the most popular summer holiday destinations for beach-loving Italian families - indeed, it's said that whole districts of Romans decamp with their neighbours to the same Sardinian beaches each August. At the same time , Sardinia's ancient 'otherness' casts a lingering and occasionally sinister shadow: the shepherds and hardy inland communities, the mountains once seen as the lair of kidnappers and the enduring individual character and dialects of Sardinia all make the place rather un-Italian. None of this, however, affects the tourists who flock to the white beaches and blue seas.
The smartest destination in Sardinia is the Costa Smeralda, the 'emerald coast'. This beautiful stretch of coastline at Sardinia's north-east corner was developed in the 1960s by wealthy investors including the Aga Khan. Every summer gossip magazines are full of photos of Italian and international 'celebrities' partying, swimming or hanging out on huge yachts in Porto Cervo and the other exclusive resorts of the Costa Smeralda.
Airports and travel
Sardinia has three international airports: Alghero, Olbia and Cagliari. All three are served by flights from the UK, although services are reduced considerably in the winter. British Airways and Easyjet both fly to Sardinia's capital Cagliari. Ryanair fly to Alghero and Easyjet to Olbia. These three airports make Sardinia, in the summer months at least, very accessible. The airports are all very close to the towns they serve, and connected by public bus services.
Ferries connect the island to mainland Italy, and if you prefer not to fly, you could travel by train via Paris to Genoa or Livorno and then catch a ferry.
Sardinia is best explored by car, as the island's prehistoric archaeological sites and glorious beaches are scattered and often remote. However, the island's towns are connected by trains and buses, and with a bit of research it is possible to enjoy a rewarding holiday using public transport. In the summer steam trains operate on some of Sardinia's scenic trenino verde ('little green train') routes.

Sardinia is ideal for several different types of holiday, or, if you have time, a combination. For a lively city break, visit Cagliari, with its museums, bars, affordable restaurants and nearby sandy beaches. For more of a holiday resort feel, fly to Alghero to explore the historic town centre and enjoy boat trips. North of Olbia, the exclusive - and expensive - resorts of the Costa Smeralda line one of the island's most beautiful stretches of coastline, and beyond the glitz you'll come to the island archipelago of La Maddalena. This cluster of islands - once home to Garibaldi and now a marine reserve - and the island of Sant'Antioco, down in the south west, make good locations for a tranquil island getaway.
Although, as mentioned above, Sardinia does have lots of uninspiring seaside hotels to cater for the full-board Italian market, you will also find luxurious places to stay, rural family-friendly resorts, decent B&Bs and thoroughly modern urban hotels. Prices are fairly high, varying from location to location, but outside the summer months you can find good deals. Check hotel location maps and read other guests' reviews to work out if a hotel will suit you. Some hotels cater for touring holidays and won't suit car-free travellers, while others, in tight-packed town centres, may not have parking or easy access for drivers. In most towns you will be able to find one or two first-class places to stay - but as the most charming tend to have only a few rooms, it's a good idea to book well in advance.

Italy is a unitary parliamentary republic in Europe. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy shares open land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino, and Vatican City. Italy covers an area of 301,338 km2 (116,347 sq mi) and has a largely temperate seasonal and Mediterranean climate. With around 61 million inhabitants it is the fourth most populous EU member state.
Since classical times, ancient Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Greeks established settlements in the south of Italy, with Etruscans and Celts inhabiting the centre and the north of Italy respectively. The Italic tribe known as the Latins formed the Roman Kingdom, which eventually became a republic that conquered and assimilated its neighbors. Ultimately the Roman Empire emerged as the dominant power in the Mediterranean basin and became the leading cultural, political and religious centre of Western civilisation. The legacy of the Roman Empire is widespread and can be observed in the global distribution of civilian law, republican governments, Christianity and the Latin script.
During the Early Middle Ages, Italy suffered sociopolitical collapse amid calamitous barbarian invasions, but by the 11th century, numerous rival city-states and maritime republics, mainly in the northern and central regions of Italy, rose to great prosperity through shipping, commerce and banking, laying the groundwork for modern capitalism.
The Renaissance began in Italy and spread to the rest of Europe, bringing a renewed interest in humanism, science, exploration and art. Italian culture flourished at this time, producing famous scholars, artists and polymaths, such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Galileo and Machiavelli. Since Middle Age, Italian explorers such as Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, John Cabot and Giovanni da Verrazzano discovered new routes to the Far East and the New World, helping to usher in the European Age of Discovery. Nevertheless, Italy's commercial and political power significantly waned with the opening of trade routes which bypassed the Mediterranean.
By the mid-19th century, a rising movement in support of Italian nationalism and independence from foreign control led to a period of revolutionary political upheaval. After centuries of foreign domination and political division, Italy was almost entirely unified in 1871, creating a great power. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, the new Kingdom of Italy rapidly industrialised, although mainly in the north, and acquired a colonial empire, while the south remained largely impoverished and excluded from industrialisation, fuelling a large and influential diaspora. Despite being one of the main victors in World War I, Italy entered a period of economic crisis and social turmoil, leading to the rise of a fascist dictatorship in 1922. Participation in World War II on the Axis side ended in military defeat, economic destruction, and an Italian civil war. Following the liberation of Italy and the rise of the resistance, the country abolished the monarchy, reinstated democracy, enjoyed a prolonged economic boom and, despite periods of sociopolitical turmoils, became a major advanced country.
Today, Italy has the third largest nominal GDP in the Eurozone and the eighth largest in the world. As an advanced economy, the country has the sixth-largest worldwide national wealth and it is ranked third for its central bank gold reserve. Italy has a very high level of human development and it stands among the top countries for life expectancy. The country plays a prominent role in regional and global economic, military, cultural, and diplomatic affairs, and it is both a regional power and a great power. Italy is a founding and leading member of the European Union and the member of numerous international institutions, including the UN, NATO, the OECD, the OSCE, the WTO, the G7, G20, the Union for the Mediterranean, the Council of Europe, Uniting for Consensus and many more. As a reflection of its cultural wealth, Italy is home to 53 World Heritage Sites, the most in the world, and is the fifth most visited country.
