The Palau de la Música Catalana is a concert hall in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Designed in the Catalan modernista style by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, it was built between 1905 and 1908 for the Orfeó Català, a choral society founded in 1891 that was a leading force in the Catalan cultural movement that came to be known as the Renaixença (Catalan Rebirth). It was inaugurated February 9, 1908.
The project was financed primarily by the society, but important financial contributions also were made by Barcelona's wealthy industrialists and bourgeoisie. The Palau won the architect an award from the Barcelona City Council in 1909, given to the best building built during the previous year. Between 1982 and 1989, the building underwent extensive restoration, remodeling, and extension under the direction of architects Oscar Tusquets and Carles Díaz. In 1997, the Palau de la Música Catalana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Hospital de Sant Pau. Today, more than half a million people a year attend musical performances in the Palau that range from symphonic and chamber music to jazz and Cançó (Catalan song).
The Palau is located in the corner of a cramped street, Carrer Palau de la Música, and Carrer de Sant Pere Mes Alt, in the section of old Barcelona known as Casc Antic. Most of the other prominent modernista buildings, those designed by Antoni Gaudí, for example, are located in the chic 19th-century extension of the city known as the Eixample.
The Lluís Millet hall is a salon located on the second floor of the Palau that is named after one of the founders of the Orfeó Català. The hall is a popular gathering place for concert-goers and also serves as a teaching area for visitors touring the building. From floor to ceiling the hall is two stories high and affords views of the intricate mosaics on the two rows of columns outside its windows that are much better than those available from the street.
It is ornated by several bronze busts of musicians related to the Palau: Lluís Millet and Amadeu Vives (Orfeó Català founders), Pablo Casals, Eduard Toldrà (founder and first conductor of the Orquestra Municipal de Barcelona, Just Cabot (Orfeó Català president) and pianist Rosa Sabater.

Palau de la Música Catalana - Visit Barcelona Palau de la Musica Orfeo Catala (Barcelona, Spain) This concert hall is a high point of Barcelona’s Modernista architecture, a symphony in tile, brick, sculpted stone and stained glass. Built by Domènech i Montaner between 1905 and 1908 for the Orfeo Català musical society, it was conceived as a temple for the Catalan Renaixença (Renaissance). The palau (palace) was built with the help of some of the best Catalan artisans of the time, and since 1990 it has undergone several major changes. The palau, like a peacock, shows off much of its splendour on the outside. Take in the principal facade with its mosaics, floral capitals and the sculpture cluster representing Catalan popular music.Wander inside the foyer and restaurant areas to admire the spangled, tiled pillars. Best of all, however, is the richly colourful auditorium upstairs, with its ceiling of blue-and-gold stained glass and shimmering skylight that looks like a giant, crystalline, downward-thrusting nipple. Above a bust of Beethoven on the stage towers a wind-blown sculpture of Wagner’s Valkyries (Wagner was top of the Barcelona charts at the time it was created). This can only be savoured on a guided tour or by attending a performance – either is highly recommended. The original Modernista creation, now a World Heritage site, did not meet with universal approval in its day. The doyen of Catalan literature, Josep Pla, did not hesitate to condemn it as 'horrible’, but few share his sentiments today. Montaner himself was also in a huff. He failed to attend the opening ceremony in response to unsettled bills. In 2009 the palau was at the centre of a fraud scandal, as its president, who subsequently resigned, admitted to having syphoned off millions of euros of funds.Admission is by guided tour, and tickets can be bought up to a week in advance by phone or online. Space is limited to a maximum of 55 people.

Palau de la Música Catalana, Spain (2017)
The stunning Palau de la Música Catalana, in Barcelona, Spain.
How can a building convey feelings or stir up emotions? Some say the stones of The Palau are alive. They are the result of a unique moment of the tenacity of a group of people united by their love of music and their country. For almost 110 years the stones have seen the best artists of the 20th century; some of the most prestigious orchestras, directors, and soloists continue to perform on this same stage.
Barcelona was once a melting pot where the most vanguard artists were living. Orfeó Català, a popular cultural and projects promoter involving music became a mass phenonium in 1891in Barcelona. This lead to modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner designing the Palau de la Música Catalana for the Orfeó Català. The stunning building, located near Plaça de Catalunya, was built in three short years from 1905 to 1908.
It was (and still is) treasured by music lovers of different social origins and trained on the scene to go beyond popular songs. The Palau organized music festivals, research music and created a music magazine. But furthermore, it quickly went beyond the music scene and became a cultural and political reference to Catalan Nationalism.

Live from Palau Musica Barcelona
