Driving DOWN The Pines-To-Palms Highway, Palm Desert, CA
A segment of Route 74 named Seven Level Hill, just south of Palm Desert, California, appears in the 1963 American comedy film It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World during the opening minutes of the film, when the major characters of the film meet for the first time following a car accident.
Route 74 between San Juan Capistrano and Lake Elsinore, due to its narrow width and high traffic volume, holds an ominous claim to fame as one of the most dangerous highways in the state.
California's legislature has relinquished state control of segments of SR 74 in Perris and Palm Desert, and turned it over to local control. This includes deleting from the highway code an unconstructed segment that would have extended SR 74 from SR 111 to Interstate 10.
On August 11, 1930, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors officially named the highway from San Jacinto Mountains to the Desert as the Palms to Pines Highway

Palm Springs Mid-Century Modern Visitors Center - Desert Views Road Trip Part 1
Palm Springs Visitor Center at the former Tramway Gas Station - A great example of mid-century modern architecture. See it at:
It seems like we just can't stay away from the road! Neek, Sar and I once again piled into the car and took off. Once again, one of my sisters (the youngest) was getting married and we were invited. But it wasn't in Oregon; this was a destination wedding in Palm Springs, California. We decided to make the most of this occasion and planned a desert road trip!
The first place we wanted to visit, even before checking into our hotel, was the Palm Springs Visitor Center. It was originally an Enco service station called the Tramway Gas Station, named so because of its location at the foot of Tramway Road, which leads to the base of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. Built in 1965 and designed by Albert Frey and Robson C. Chambers, its distinctive, cantilevered, wedge-shaped canopy is considered to be a prime example of modernist architecture. It was intended to be the first building drivers saw when approaching Palm Springs from the north via California State Route 111.

436-San Jacinto Mtn, The Complete Palms to Pines Byway Scenic 37 Mile Drive
Today we are going to Mountain Center up in the San Jacinto mountains traveling on highway 74 that is also known as the Palms to Pines Byway. Our journey begins here at Palm Desert at the junction of Highways 111 and 74.
Now whether you call it the Pines to Palms Highway or Palms to Pines Byway it is a matter of perspective. You see if you are traveling from Mountain Center, the highway is called Pines to Palms Highway which begins at the intersection of Highway 74 and Highway 243.
Government action has added to the confusion over the years.
In 1930, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors named the road from the San Jacinto Mountains to the Desert the Pines to Palms Highway.
Then, in 1971, the state designated the same stretch of road the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway.
In 1993, the Palms to Pines Scenic Highway was declared a National Forest Scenic Byway.
And to add a little more confusion, there is another “Pines to Palms Highway”. It is that continuous roadway created between Winnipeg Manitoba and New Orleans Louisiana.
The first cavalcade left Winnipeg on January 23, 1926 traveling the entire route, stopping in all major cities and towns along the way to publicize the existence of the Highway. This monument plaque marks the North end of the Pines to Palms Highway.....................

Desert X Biennial 2019: John Gerrard
For the duration of the 2019 edition of the Desert X Biennial in Coachella Valley, California, Palm Springs visitors that are driving into town are not only greeted by the iconic modernist visitors center (formerly a gas station, designed by Albert Frey and Robson Chambers), but also a giant video screen that shows artist John Gerrard's artwork “Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017 (2017-2019). It depicts the site of the Lucas Gusher, the world’s first major oil find (in 1901), located in Spindletop, Texas, now barren and exhausted. The site is recreated as a digital simulation, the center of which is marked by a flagpole spewing an endless stream of black smoke.
This is what the press text says about the artwork:
The computer-generated spindle top runs parallel to the Texas site throughout the year, the sun rising at the appropriate times and the days getting longer and shorter with the seasons. The simulation has no beginning or end and runs by software that calculates each frame of the animation in real time as it is needed. Situated at the gateway to Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017 acts a stark reminder of not only the willful exploitation and depletion of resources that millions of years ago covered this former sea floor, but also of the energy taken to return the deserted land to its current state of artificial habitation. The invisible gas responsible for climate change is made visible. Flying the flag of our self-destruction, we are asked to consider our role in the warming of the planet and simultaneous desertification of once fertile lands.
John Gerrard (North Tipperary, Ireland, born 1974) is known for creating real-time simulated images set against austere landscapes. He uses this approach to convey messages of how power functions in society, exposing the intricate structures and overwhelming networks that dominate mass culture. The striking realism and monumental presentation of his simulations leave the viewer questioning reality, considering the events that would need to occur to make images.
