Visual Arts Students - PSU
Augusta Savage: A Woman of Her Word
Jeffreen M. Hayes, executive director, Threewalls
An outstanding sculptor associated with the intellectual and cultural awakening known as the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta Savage (1892-1962) overcame poverty, racism, and sexual discrimination in pursuit of her goals. Creating new visions of black identity in her work, she was also an activist, campaigning for equal rights for African Americans in the arts. The traveling exhibition Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman and its accompanying catalog is the first to reassess Savage’s contributions to art and cultural history in light of 21st-century attention to the concept of the artist-activist. The exhibition viewing dates are as follows: the Cummer Museum of Art, October 12, 2018-April 7, 2019; the New York Historical Society, May 3–July 28, 2019; the Palmer Museum of Art, Pennsylvania State University, August 24–December 8, 2019; and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, January 19–March 22, 2020. The groundbreaking catalog features illustrations of more than 40 works by Savage, her students, and her contemporaries, archival letters, rarely seen photographs, and an extensive bibliography and essays by Kirsten Pai Buick, Bridget R. Cooks, and Howard Dodson. In celebration of the Washington, DC, book launch on June 23, 2019, exhibition organizer Jeffreen M. Hayes discusses the life, work, and lasting legacy of Savage as an artist and a community builder. This program was proposed and made possible by Darryl Atwell.

William Powhida - Visual Artist & Former Art Critic
William Powhida makes fun of the art world to highlight the paradoxes and absurdities of economic and social value systems that keep the sphere of visual art afloat on a surging tide of inequality. His work relies on research and participation to diagram, list, perform and critique the forces that shape perceptions of value. He is responsible or partly responsible for exhibitions including After The Contemporary at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Month2Month with Jennifer Dalton, Overculture at Postmasters Gallery, and Hashtag Class [#class] with Jennifer Dalton at Winkleman Gallery. His recent exhibition After After the Contemporary was on view at Charlie James Gallery this spring and he will be exhibiting in November at Gallery Poulsen in Copenhagen.
Powhida is an infrequent contributor to Art F City and Hyperallergic on issues that alarm him and a member of the Artists Studio Affordability Project, an artist-led advocacy group working towards commercial rent regulation. He is also the co-host of Explain Me, a biweekly podcast with Paddy Johnson exploring the intersection of art, money and politics.
He is currently represented by Postmasters Gallery (NY), Charlie James Gallery (LA), Poulsen Gallery (DK), and Platform Gallery (WA). He holds a BFA in Painting from Syracuse University and an MFA in painting from Hunter College. His work has been written about in The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, The Los Angeles Times, Hyperallergic, Art F City, The Guardian, The New Yorker, New York magazine and October, among other publications.

Stolen Children: The Legacy of the Carlisle Indian School and Canadian Residential Schools
November 7, 2018
Program Introduced by KHC Fellow, Julio Meza
Speaker: Hayes P. Mauro, Associate Professor, Queensborough Community College, Art & Design Department
Short Films: Kent Monkman’s Brothers and Sisters, Released 2015, 3 mins and Stolen Children, Residential School Survivors Speak Out, Released 2015, 18 mins
Two short films based on original archival footage and the accounts of survivors of the Canadian residential schools will be screened. A talk will follow by Professor Mauro based on his book, The Art of Americanization at the Carlisle Indian School. He will speak about the social reformers, usually Christian evangelicals, who wished to Americanize Native Americans and African Americans, along with newer immigrants from southern and eastern Europe. This meant transforming them into culturally acceptable entities who looked, acted, dressed, and thought like an idealized middle class Anglo-American. Needless to say, this had ramifications for both race and gender definitions.

Survivance on Turtle Island: Engaging with Native American Cultural Survival, Resistance, and Allyship
Clarice Smith Distinguished Lecture: critic Christopher Knight
A thorough analysis of the specific images chosen by Pop art's leading artists demonstrates that Pop’s actual subject is art culture, not pop culture. Commercial imagery drawn from mass media provided a relevant visual language with which to explore a wide range of traditional subjects in painting and sculpture, both Modern and historical. There's a reason that Andy Warhol chose soup for his first suite of Pop paintings. That reason is not, as the artist slyly claimed, that he ate soup for lunch every day. Join Los Angeles Times art critic, Christopher Knight as he explores the Pop inventory that instead turns out to be an extensive catalog of other art.
This annual series is made possible by the generosity of Clarice Smith.

Driskell Center for the Study of the Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora at the University of Maryland, College Park

Driskell (b. 1931). This tour, a series of conversations between Driskell and Curlee R. Holton, highlights his contributions as an artist, scholar, and cultural historian and the contributions of African American artists to the country’s artistic heritage. Driskell has lived through and witnessed firsthand the dynamic historic changes that define America’s contemporary cultural landscape. In addition to Driskell’s singular accomplishments, he is a gifted and inspiring speaker whose personal narrative brings with it an intimate and powerful voice. The National Gallery of Art provided a Washington, DC, venue for the national tour on September 22, 2019.

SUMMARY
=======
The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York City, colloquially the Met, is the largest art museum in the United States. With 7.06 million visitors in 2016, it was the third most visited art museum in the world, and the fifth most visited museum of any kind. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among seventeen curatorial departments. The main building, on the eastern edge of Central Park along Museum Mile in Manhattan, is by area one of the world's largest art galleries. A much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from Medieval Europe. On March 18, 2016, the museum opened the Met Breuer museum at Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side; it extends the museum's modern and contemporary art program.
The permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings, and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes, and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from first-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded in 1870 for the purposes of opening a museum to bring art and art education to the American people. It opened on February 20, 1872, and was originally located at 681 Fifth Avenue.
