Ancient Panathenaia
Panathenaia was an ancient Greek feast of Athens dedicated to the goddess Athena, which took place in the city every four years.
For the citizens of Athens, Panathenaea was the most important event of the year, but it was not considered as important as that of the Olympic Games.
It was divided into the Minor and the Great Panathenaea.

An Ancient Miracle ! Acropolis-Greece/ Ένα Αρχαίο Θαύμα ! Ακρόπολη
The Acropolis of Athens was planned, and construction begun, under the guidance of the great general and statesman Pericles of Athens. Over two years of detailed planning went into the specifications and contracting the labour for the Parthenon alone, and the first stone was laid on 28 July 447 BCE, during the Panathenaic festival. Wishing to create a lasting monument which would both honour the goddess Athena (who presided over Athens) and proclaim the glory of the city to the world, Pericles spared no expense in the construction of the Acropolis and, especially, the Parthenon, hiring the skilled architects Callicrates, Mnesikles, and Iktinos and the sculptor Phidias (recognized as the finest sculptor in the ancient world who created the statue of Zeus at Olympia, one of The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) to work on the project. According to the historian Pedley, “the work…was carried out under the supervision of Phidias. In fact, Plutarch says that Phidias was in charge of the whole of Pericles’ scheme” (251). Hundreds of artisans, metal workers, craftspeople, painters, woodcarvers, and literally thousands of unskilled labourers worked on the Acropolis. Phidias created a gold and ivory statue of Athena which stood either in the Parthenon, known as the Temple of Athena Parthenos ('Athena the Virgin’ in Greek), or in the centre of the Acropolis near the smaller temple of Athena. During the Panathenaic festival, celebrants would carry a new robe to the ancient wooden cult statue of Athena, housed in the Erechtheion.
The Acropolis rises 490 feet (150 metres) into the sky above the city of Athens and has a surface area of approximately 7 acres (3 hectares). The site was a natural choice for a fortification and was inhabited at least as early as the Mycenaean Period in Greece (1900-1100 BCE) if not earlier. There was already a complex built on the hill, and a temple to Athena in progress, which was destroyed by the Persians under Xerxes in 480 BCE when they sacked Athens. The later structures, famous today, were built as a testament to the resilience of the Athenians following the defeat of Xerxes’ forces at the Battle of Salamis (480 BCE) and to exemplify the glory of the city. The four main buildings in the original plan for the Acropolis were the Propylaia, the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Propylaia was the ornate entranceway into the temple complex, while the Parthenon was the central attraction.

Eating Local Greek Food in Athens Greece ???????? - Panathenaic Stadium
We traded in the Greek Island for mainland Athens, Greece! We decided to have a little fun and race at the world's first ever modern Olympic Stadium called Panathenaic Stadium right in the center of Athens city. Then, we met up with a local friend who took us on an authentic Greek Food Tour and we were blown away by the quality of food. Even Ryan liked it ;)
Panathenaic Stadium is the worlds first modern Olympic Stadium and it's the only stadium in the world made completely out of white marble. The stadium itself is really impressive and only cost 5 Euro per person to enter and tour, however you can walk up and see the stadium from the roadside if you don't want to go in and explore. We decided instead of just walking around and admiring the place, we would have a little fun and film a ridiculous, over the top race scene haha.... we had tons of fun! After Ryan won the race (boooooo) we headed back home to get ready to meet up with one of you guys! A subscriber living in Athens, Greece.
Our new friend took us to the best coffee in Athens before we headed out to a traditional Greek taverna for some real authentic cuisine. The Taverna we went to didn't have English menus, or menus in fact, so we were really lucky to have Nic with us to show us the ropes and order up all the good Greek food. We ended up with a full table of some of the best food in Athens that you could possibly find. Stacia even said it was one of her favorite meals EVER! Our Athens food tour was pretty much covered all in one spot, we had a mixed grill of Goat & Lamb, charred intestines, heart and liver, greek salad, warm honey raki, and a cheese flatbread with honey on top for dessert. It was truly amazing being able to experience greek cuisine from the perspective of a local.
If you guys want to see more videos in Athens Greece, you're in luck! We have one final video in our greece vlog series coming your way and it just might be the most epic. Any guesses where we'll explore next? ;) If you have any questions on visiting Athens, the best things to do in Athens Greece or if Athens is worth seeing, let us know in the comments below.

The exhibition hall's delegated wonderfulness is the best floor Parthenon Gallery, a glass chamber lodging the sanctuary's 160m-long frieze. It's mounted as it once might have been, following the format of the building, and you can walk around, as if on the sections, and inspect the parts at eye level. The frieze portrays the Panathenaic Procession, beginning at the southwest corner of the sanctuary, with two gatherings separating from and meeting on the east side for the conveyance of the peplos to Athena. (It encourages a bit to see the motion picture that is screened on this floor.) Interspersed between the brilliant toned firsts are stark-white mortar copies of the missing pieces – the disputable Parthenon Marbles hacked off by Lord Elgin in 1801 and later sold to the British Museum (the greater part the frieze is in London).

ANCIENT ATHENIAN AGORA 2500 y.o.marketplace & Museum @ Athens by Adeyto & Huawei P20 PRO
Literally meaning “marketplace,” the Agora was the economic center, where the wealth, reach and influence of classical Athens was visible by the wide range of goods shipped in from the nearby port of Piraeus, which ranged from wheat produced on the shores of the Black Sea to precious dyes from the Levant.
But what marked the Agora with everlasting glory was the other commodity traded and peddled daily: ideas. The Agora was the meeting grounds and hang out spot for ancient Athenians, where members of the elected democracy assembled to discuss affairs of state, noblemen came to conduct business, ordinary citizens got together to meet up with friends and watch performers, and where the famed philosophers doused their listeners with wisdom (or rubbish).
The Agora also played serious a role in religious festivals. The architectural layout of the Agora was centered around the Panathenaic Way, a road the ran through the heart of Athens to the main gate of the city, the Dipylon.
The museum is housed in the Stoa of Attalos, and its exhibits are connected with the Athenian democracy. The collection of the museum includes clay, bronze and glass objects, sculptures, coins and inscriptions from the 7th to the 5th century BC, as well as pottery of the Byzantine period and the Turkish occupation. The exhibition within the museum contains work of art which describes the private and public life in ancient Athens. In 2012, new sculpture exhibition was added to the museum which includes portraits from Athenian Agora excavation. The new exhibition revolves around portraits of idealized gods, officially honored people of the city, wealthy Roman citizens of the 1st and 2nd century; AD, 3rd-century citizens and finally on work of art from private art schools of late antiquity.
Other sites to see in or around the Athenian Agora include the Church of the Holy Apostles (a Byzantine Church built around 1000 CE), the Roman Agora, the Areopagus (a hill where city affairs were managed prior to the democracy), the Pnyx (a hill where city affairs were managed once it became a democracy), the ancient cemetery at Keameikos, and of course the Acropolis.
