Discover the Museum of Cycladic Art
A dynamic cultural institute in the centre of Athens, the Museum of Cycladic Art focuses on promoting the ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with particular emphasis on Cycladic art of the third millennium BC.
Since it was founded in 1986 to house the private collection of Dolly and Nikolaos Goulandris, the Museum has expanded significantly and now houses one of the most complete private collections of Cycladic art worldwide, with representative examples of the world renown Cycladic marble figurines.
The Museum’s permanent collections include 3000 Cycladic, ancient Greek, and ancient Cypriot artefacts, witnesses to the cultures that flourished in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean from the fourth millennium BC to approximately the sixth century AD.
FIRST FLOOR: CYCLADIC ART
The Museum of Cycladic Art houses one of the most complete private collections of Cycladic art worldwide, with representative examples of figurines and vases, tools, weapons, and pottery from all phases of the distinctive Cycladic island culture that flourished in the central Aegean during the Early Bronze Age (third millennium BC). Marble carving is the most characteristic product of Cycladic culture, and the abstract forms of its figurines have influenced several twentieth and twenty-first century artists, such as Constantin Brancusi, Amedeo Modigliani, Alberto Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, and Ai Weiwei. Although Cycladic marble figurines and vases appeal to the modern viewer for their almost translucent whiteness, their creators loved colour and used it liberally on these objects for both practical and symbolic reasons.
SECOND FLOOR: ANCIENT GREEK ART – A HISTORY IN IMAGES
Ancient Greek Art is renowned for its rich iconography. Gods and heroes, myths, religious ceremonies, aspects of daily life, and even the moment of death are depicted in numerous high quality images on a variety of media. These images provide valuable information about ancient Greek societies, their organization and structure, and the beliefs of people.
The exhibition unravels the history of Ancient Greek Art from the 2nd millennium BC to the 4th century AD. By exploring the 350 exhibits of the gallery (vases, sculptures, figurines, metal vessels, coins etc.), visitors can discover how the various artistic forms came into being, how they evolved in time, and how the symbolism of images changed in relation to the social and political conditions of each period.
A special section is dedicated to the fascinating topic of ancient technology. With the help of videos and interactive applications, visitors can become familiar with the techniques used in antiquity to manufacture objects like those exhibited in this and other archaeological museums.
THIRD FLOOR: CYPRUS – ANCIENT ART AND CULTURE
The Thanos N. Zintilis Collection of Cypriot Antiquities, one of world’s most important, was loaned permanently to the Museum of Cycladic Art in 2002. This display, which showcases more than 500 artefacts from the Chalcolithic to the Modern periods, focuses on the great variety of styles and intricate forms of prehistoric and historic pottery, weaving, metalwork, worship, burial practices, foreign relations, and the development of both large-scale, and miniature sculpture. Maps, texts, and multimedia applications richly illustrate and document the archaeology of Cyprus, making the display accessible to children, students, the general public, and scholars alike.
FOURTH FLOOR: ANCIENT GREEK ART – SCENES FROM DAILY LIFE IN ANTIQUITY
This display transports visitors to the world of antiquity. It is a virtual tour in time and space that begins in the realm of gods and heroes, continues through the world of Eros, follows the activities of everyday men and women in private and public life, explores their religious practices, and ends with the Underworld. 142 ancient artefacts, mostly Classical and Hellenistic (fifth-first centuries BC), are grouped in nine thematic units. Two short videos made for this exhibit with the latest technical innovations complement the display.
TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS
The Museum of Cycladic Art’s temporary exhibitions focus on archaeology and modern and contemporary art with the aim to familiarize the public with important twentieth and twenty-first century artists and to explore the relations between ancient cultures and modern art. Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Thomas Struth, Louise Bourgeois, Sarah Lucas, Ugo Rondinone, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Ai Weiwei, and Cy Twombly are among the artists hosted. Temporary exhibitions are housed in both the museum’s Main Building and the Stathatos Mansion, one of the most important extant nineteenth-century Neoclassical buildings in Athens. A glass-roofed corridor connects the two.

Greek Art - 6 Classical Period: Acropolis of Athens
Sixth video about the Greek Art serie. Any doubt? Send me a message.
Historia del Arte:
Land of the Art:
The birth of Greek culture and art were born between the IX and VIII centuries BCE on the peninsula of Attica, the Peloponnese peninsula, the peninsula on the west coast of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands. The importance of their art and culture is enormous.
The Classical Period goes from 480 to 323 BCE. It is a period with new life forms, new philosophy (Socrates and Plato), and a new conception of art. The proportional canon is used. Due to the confidence they had because they won the Persian Wars, all the sculpture was like a remembrance of the victories in the form of Titanomachies, Amazonomachies, Giantomachies... Among other types.
Acropolis of Athens: the acropolis is in an elevated terrain, with defensive and powerful character. Athens is named so because Athena won against Poseidon to put the name to the city.
Propylaea: this is the entry to the acropolis. It has doric capitals in the exterior and jonic capitals in the interior.
Atenea Nike: a little temple close to the entry. It conmemores the Battle of Salamis, in the Persian Wars. In its interior was an Athena Nike, a winged victory.
Parthenon: the great and very well known temple. It is a temple dedicated to Athena Parthenos or Virginal Athena. It replaced the Hekatompedon. Columns with entasis, a visual effect to give more perfection, that is what they looked for with this. This temple had the Athena Parthenos statue by Phidias, a great chryselephantine statue, in whose base we can see the Pandora's tale. Phidias also worked in the sculptures of this temple. The eastern fronton tells the birth of Athena from the Zeus' head. The western fronton tells the dispute of Athens between Athena and Poseidon. The metopes, also made by Phidias, tell mythological battles. The best conserved is the Centauromachy's metopes, but others were the Gigantomachy, the Amazonomachy and the looting of Troy. The Panathenaea frieze tells how this festival is done, it is in the interior of the temple, and it's by Phidias too. The Athene Promachos is known by representations of coins, she is the salvator and guardian of the city. She is represented as a warrior, and she was very big.
Erecteion: this temple has a very rare form, knowning the perfection rules they had to follow. It has various rooms, and the main one is dedicated to Athena. Jonic order is very present here. You can see the Caryatids, women columns, that tells the legend that were traitors to Greece in the Persian Wars.
Arrephorium: house of the Arrephorai, child girls around 7-10 years old that sewed the peplos of Athena.
Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia: a sanctuary to this goddess with a sculpture of the Horse of Troy.
Bronze Gallery: a place to save bronze offerings to Athena.
Sanctuary of Zeus Polieus: where were done sacrificios of oxen.
Sanctuary of Pandion: dedicated to Pandion, son of Erictonio. Actually, the museum of the Acropolis is here.

Why is Stephen Fry so passionate about the ancient Greeks?
Is Stephen Fry the most eloquent man in the world? Very possibly. Because if you ask him, after his book Mythos and his latest, Heroes, why he is so passionate about the Greeks, he can riff for a few minutes in a way that will convince you that these legendary stories are safe in his hands.

CRETE: Exploring the HISTORIC VENETIAN FORT of HERAKLION (GREECE), what to see ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit The Koules (or Castello a Mare - Fort on the Sea in Italian) which is a fortress located at the entrance of the old port of Heraklion, Crete, Greece. It was built by the Republic of Venice in the early 16th century, and is still in good condition today. The fortress is made up of two parts: a high rectangular section, and a slightly lower semi-elliptical section. Its walls are up to 8.7m thick at some places, and it has three entrances. The fort has two stories, with a total of 26 rooms, which were originally used as barracks, a prison, storage rooms, a water reservoir, a church, a mill and a bakery.
Crete, Greece's largest island, is known for its varied terrain, which ranges from fine-sand beaches at Elafonisi to the White Mountains. Mt. Ida, the tallest of the range, is home to the Ideon Cave, which was the birthplace of Zeus, according to Greek mythology. The capital, Heraklion, is home to the renowned Heraklion Archaeological Museum, housing Minoan artifacts, and Knossos, a Bronze Age settlement.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Olympians - Zeus's Day Out
MORE VIDEOS!
Olympians - Zeus's Day Out. Zeus and Poseidon get tired of Mount Olympus and decided to go for a walk among the mortals only to come up on Hephaestus.
Zeus is the King of the Gods in Greek mythology. Zeus was viewed as a king who oversaw the universe. In Hesiod's Theogony, he assigns the various gods their roles. In the Homeric Hymns he is referred to as the chieftain of the gods. He is also called the Father of Gods and men, according to Hesiod's Theogony. He ruled the Olympians of Mount Olympus in ways representative as both a father as head of the family and a king. He was the god of sky and thunder in Greek mythology.
Poseidon (Greek: Ποσειδῶν; Latin: Neptūnus) was the god of the sea, storms, and, as Earth-Shaker, of earthquakes in Greek mythology. He was also one of Zeus's brothers. The name of the sea-god Nethuns in Etruscan was adopted in Latin for Neptune in Roman mythology: both were sea gods analogous to Poseidon. Linear B tablets show that Poseidon was venerated at Pylos and Thebes in pre-Olympian Bronze Age Greece, but he was integrated into the Olympian gods as the brother of Zeus and Hades. Poseidon has many children. There is a Homeric hymn to Poseidon, who was the protector of many Hellenic cities, although he lost the contest for Athens to Athena.
Hephaestus (8 spellings; pronounced /həˈfɛstəs/ or /hɨˈfɛstəs/; Ancient Greek Ἥφαιστος Hēphaistos) was a Greek god whose Roman equivalent was Vulcan. He is the son of Zeus and Hera (the King and Queen of the Gods). He was the god of technology, blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes. Like other mythic smiths but unlike most other gods, Hephaestus was lame, which gave him a grotesque appearance in Greek eyes. He served as the blacksmith of the gods, and he was worshiped in the manufacturing and industrial centers of Greece, particularly in Athens. The center of his cult was in Lemnos.[1] Hephaestus's symbols are a smith's hammer, an anvil and a pair of tongs, although sometimes he is portrayed holding an axe.

Greek art
Greek art (or, more correctly, art in Greece) began in the Cycladic and Minoan civilization, and gave birth to Western classical art in the subsequent Geometric, Archaic and Classical periods (with further developments during the Hellenistic Period). It absorbed influences of Eastern civilizations, of Roman art and its patrons, and the new religion of Orthodox Christianity in the Byzantine era and absorbed Italian and European ideas during the period of Romanticism (with the invigoration of the Greek Revolution), right up until the Modernist and Postmodernist. Greek art is mainly five forms: architecture, sculpture, painting, pottery and jewelry making.

Birth of Athena
All of the Olympian gods have strange birth stories, but this might be the most extraordinary one. According to the myth, Zeus' wife before Hera was Metis, goddess of wisdom. When Metis became pregnant, Zeus feared that the child would be too powerful. With this in mind, Zeus swallowed Metis as he was pretending to kiss her. Metis gave birth inside of Zeus and the child migrated up to his head, creating the worst headache ever known in the history of the cosmos. Hephaistos, smith of the gods, came to the rescue - he split Zeus' head open with his trusty axe. Out leapt Athena, his magnificent daughter, in full battle dress and shouting her war cry, which echoed throughout the universe. Zeus was so proud of his favorite child that he gave her his aegis to wear. He loves her more than any of his other children to this very day.
