Kathmandu Nepal Pashupatinath Hindu Temple Complex
Kathmandu Nepal Pashupatinath Hindu Temple Complex
I started my walk around Pashupatinath at the western entrance gate with Shiva as Yogeshvara, lord of yogis above the entrance and Ganesh to the left. Although only Hindus can enter the temple complex, you can glimpse Nandi, Shiva's bull, in the courtyard. The bull is about 300 years old.
A golden door sits just to the right of the western Pashupati
To the right of the entrance gate are golden doors with some repairs underway nearby from the 2015 earthquake.
From there, I walked to the Bagmati River and looked up towards the burning ghats, used for cremating the dead. I looked across the river to Pandra Shivalaya which contain a Shiva Lingam,

One of such iconic temples is the Pashupatinath temple. Pashupati literally means Lord of the animals and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Shri Pashupatinath temple is one of the Holiest Temples in the World.
History of pasupathinath
It is believed that once Lord Shiva became tired of his old palace Kailashnath atop of The Himalayas moved to Mrigasthali, the forest on the opposite bank of the Bagmati River. Lord Shiva was amazed by the beauty of the site.To remain hidden amongst the Gods he tried to allude them as a deer. Despite pleas from the Gods Shiva used to return and hence the Gods decided to use force to get him back to Kailashnath. It is said that Lord Vishnu grabbed Lord Shiva(Deer) by his horns and shattered the horns into pieces.
Lord Vishnu then established a lingam on the banks of Bagmati river with the shattered pieces horn. As time passed temple was buried and forgotten.Later a cow is said to have noticed the Lingam and sprinkled her milk in the buried lingam. When the cow herders dug the spot where the cow sprinkled milk, they found the lost lingam and built the temple which is known as Pashupatinath temple.
The earliest evidence of the temple’s existence dates back to 400 A.D. The current main temple of Pashupatinath complex was built at the end of the 17th century to replace the previous one, destroyed by termites. Pashupati was a tutelary deity of the ancient rulers of the Kathmandu Valley; in 605 AD, King Amshuvarma considered himself favored by his touching of the god’s feet.
The temple is located on the banks of the Bagmati River, Kathmandu. The temple is barred to non-Hindus, but a good view of the temple can be had from the opposite bank of the river.
Architecture
It is a square, two-tiered pagoda temple built on a single-tier plinth, and it stands 23.6 meters above the ground with richly ornamented gilt and silver-plated doors. Located on the Western bank of Bagmati, it is considered a masterpiece of Hindu architecture.
The two-storied roof is made from copper and is covered with gold. This richly decorated temple with wooden sculptures is believed to make wishes come true. One of the most astonishing decorations of the temple is the huge golden statue of Nandi – Shiva’s bull.
The struts under the roofs, dating from the late 17th century, are decorated with wood carvings of Parvati, Ganesh, Kumar or the Yoginis, as well as Hanuman, Rama, Sita, Lakshman and other gods and goddesses from the Ramayana
The complex comprises of many temples. South of the temple, is Chadeshvar, an inscribed Licchhavi linga from the 7th century, and north of the temple is a 9th-century temple of Brahma. On the south side of Pashupatinath temple is the Dharmashila, a stone where sacred oaths are taken, and pillars with statues of various Shah kings.
In the northeast corner of the temple courtyard is the small pagoda temple of Vasuki, the King of the Nagas. According to the locals, Vasuki took up residence here in order to protect Pashupati. One can often see devotees circumambulating and worshipping Vasuki before entering the main sanctum.
The Bagmati River, which runs next to Pashaputinath Temple, has highly sacred properties. Thus the banks are lined with many ghats (bathing spots) for use by the pilgrim.
Arya Ghat, dating from the early 1900s, is of special importance. Built along the right bank of Bagmati numerous platforms for funeral pyres are built. The cremations on these platforms are a common activity
The western bank of Bagmati also hosts the so-called Panch Deval (Five temples) complex, which once was a holy shrine but now serves a shelter for destitute old people.
Across the Bagmati River are 15 votive shrines, the Pandra Shivalaya, which were built to enshrine lingams in memory of deceased persons between 1859 and 1869.
Pashupatinath temple is the most important temple dedicated to god Shiva. Every year this temple attracts thousands of elderly followers of Hinduism. The crowd can be seen all through the year but especially during Shivaratri, Nepali festival Teej and holds special importance in the Hindu month of Shrawan.

KATHMANDU 4 Places in Kathmandu Valley you most Visit
I always visit those four places in Kathmandu valley during my Nepal trip. If you are also planning to visit Nepal, don’t forget to visit those places. In this article, I am sharing some information about those places. Last year, the massive earthquake destroyed some heritages, temples and ancient places in Nepal. More than 700 monuments in Kathmandu and its environs were damaged in the quake. But that earthquake couldn’t damage natural and ancient beauty of Nepal.
1. Pashupatinath
The Pashupatinath Temple, with its astonishing architectural beauty, stands as a symbol of faith, religion, culture and tradition. Regarded as the most sacred temple of ‘Hindu Lord Shiva’ in the world, Pashupatinath Temple’s existence dates back to 400 A.D. This is located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu. Thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come to pay homage to this temple, which is also known as ‘The Temple of Living Beings’. This temple complex is on UNESCO World Heritage Site’s list since 1979. Gold-painted images of guardian deities, Chaturmukha (four-faced statue), Chadeshvar (an inscribed Licchavi linga from the 7th century), Brahma Temple, Dharmashila (a stone where sacred oaths are taken), Arya Ghat, Gauri Ghat (holy bath), Pandra Shivalaya (15 shrines), Gorakhnath and Vishwarup Temples, Guhyeshwari (Guhjeshwari) Temple, Kirateshwar Mahadeva Mandir and Surya Ghat are main attractions in Pashupatinath area. There is no major damage in Pashupatinath because of the earthquake.
Sadhus are especially common at Pashupatinath. In Hinduism, Sadhu is a religious ascetic.
2. Swayambhunath
The Buddhist temple of Swayambhunath, situated on the top of a hill, west of Kathmandu, is one of the most popular, holy and instantly recognizable symbols of Nepal. The temple is colloquially known as the ‘monkey temple’ because of the large tribe of roving monkeys who guard the temple. One of the major Attractions is the Stupa. Swayambhunath Stupa is a golden spire crowning a conical wooded hill. It is the most ancient and enigmatic of all the holy shrines in Kathmandu Valley. ‘Area Surrounding The Stupa’ is also another major attraction.
Swayambhunath is also known as the Monkey Temple as there are holy monkeys living in the north-west parts of the temple.
The surroundings of Swyambhunarayan Stupa consists of chaityas, temples, painted images of deities and numerous other religious objects. Another attraction Harati Temple is dedicated to the goddess of smallpox and other epidemics. The presence of the Harati Devi temple signifies the intermingling of the pantheons of Hinduism and Buddhism in Nepal. Atop Syambunath hill is another fascinating, though less visited temple, Shantipur, popularly known as the ‘Palace of Peace’. It is said that inside the secret underground chamber of the temple lives the 8th-century Tantric master, Shankar Acharya. The master, it is believed, has lived through centuries and has full control on the weather and the King of Kathmandu must go to him in times of drought. There is no major damage in Swayambhunath because of the earthquake.
3. Bhaktapur Durbar Square
Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the plaza in front of the royal palace of the old Bhaktapur Kingdom. It is one of three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is an assortment of the pagoda and shikhara-style temples grouped around a fifty-five-window palace of brick and wood. The square is part of a charming valley as it highlights the idols of ancient kings perched on top of stone monoliths, the guardian deities looking out from their sanctuaries, the wood carvings in very place - struts, lintels, tympanums, gateways and windows - all seem to form a well-orchestrated symphony. The Palace of Fifty-five Windows, the world famous Golden gate of Bhaktapur, the magnificent and beautiful lion gate, Mini Pashupatinath Temple, Batsala Temple, Statue of Bhupatindra Malla, Bhairava Nath Temple and Nyatapola Temple are major attractions in Bhaktapur Durbar Square. On April 25th, 2015 a 7.8 magnitude earthquake destroyed so many attractions in Kathmandu Durbar Square including Vatsala Durga Temple and Fasidega temple.
JuJu Dhau (King Curd) is my favorite in Bhaktapur.
4. Kathmandu Durbar SquareKathmandu Durbar Square is one of the important historic and tourist destinations in Nepal. This massive complex is home to palaces, temples and courtyards. The original center of Kathmandu is often named as Basantapur, Hanuman Dhoka or Durbar Square all denoting the same location. Kathmandu Durbar square has various historical royal and governmental institutions mixed with temples of different styles and ages. It may seem a little bit crowded with lots of buildings and temples built

Pashupatinath at Monsoon
It is not known for certain when Pashupatinath was founded. Tradition says it was constructed by Pashupreksha of the Somadeva Dynasty in the 3rd century BC, but the first historical records date from the 13th century. The ascetic Pashupata sect was likely related to its foundation.
Pashupati was a tutelary deity of the ancient rulers of the Kathmandu Valley; in 605 AD, Amshuvarman considered himself favored by his touching of the god's feet.
By the later Middle Ages, many imitations of the temple had been built, such as in Bhaktapur (1480), Lalitpur (1566) and Benares (early 19th century). The original temple was destroyed several times until it was given its present form under King Bhupalendra Malla in 1697.
According to a legend recorded in local texts, especially the Nepalamahatmya and the Himavatkhanda, the Hindu god Shiva once fled from the other gods in Varanasi to Mrigasthali, the forest on the opposite bank of the Bagmati River from the temple. There, in the form of a gazelle, he slept with his consort Parvati. When the gods discovered him there and tried to bring him back to Varanasi, he leapt across the river to the opposite bank, where one of his horns broke into four pieces. After this, Shiva became manifest as Pashupati (Lord of Animals) in a four-face (chaturmukha) linga.
What to See at Pashupatinath Temple
Pashupati Temple stands in the center of the town of Deopatan, in the middle of an open courtyard. It is a square, two-tiered pagoda temple built on a single-tier plinth, and it stands 23.6 meters above the ground. Richly ornamented gilt and silver-plated doors are on all sides.
On both sides of each door are niches of various sizes containing gold-painted images of guardian deities. Inside the temple itself is a narrow ambulatory around the sanctum. The sanctum contains a one-meter high linga with four faces (chaturmukha) representing Pashupati, as well as images of Vishnu, Surya, Devi and Ganesh.
The priests of Pashaputinath are called Bhattas and the chief priest is called Mool Bhatt or Raval. The chief priest is answerable only to the King of Nepal and reports to him on temple matters on a periodic basis.
The struts under the roofs, dating from the late 17th century, are decorated with wood carvings of members of Shiva's family such as Parvati, Ganesh, Kumar or the Yoginis, as well as Hanuman, Rama, Sita, Lakshman and other gods and goddesses from the Ramayana.
Pashaputi Temple's extensive grounds include many other old and important temples, shrines and statues. South of the temple, for instance, is Chadeshvar, an inscribed Licchavi linga from the 7th century, and north of the temple is a 9th-century temple of Brahma. On the south side of Pashupati temple is the Dharmashila, a stone where sacred oaths are taken, and pillars with statues of various Shah kings.
In the northeast corner of the temple courtyard is the small pagoda temple of Vasuki, the King of the Nagas. Vasuki has the form of a Naga (mythical snake) from the waist upwards, while the lower parts are an intricate tangle of snakes' bodies. According to local belief, Vasuki took up residence here in order to protect Pashupati. One can often see devotees circumambulating and worshipping Vasuki before entering the main sanctum.
The Bagmati River, which runs next to Pashaputinath Temple, has highly sacred properties. Thus the banks are lined with many ghats (bathing spots) for use by pilgrims. Renovating or furnishing these sites has always been regarded as meritorious.
Arya Ghat, dating from the early 1900s, is of special importance because it is the only place where lustral water for Pashupatinath Temple can be obtained and it is where members of the royal family are cremated. The main cremation site is Bhasmeshvar Ghat, which is the most-used cremation site in the Kathmandu Valley. The preferred bathing spot for women is the Gauri Ghat, to the north.
Across the Bagmati River are 15 votive shrines, the Pandra Shivalaya, which were built to enshrine lingas in memory of deceased persons between 1859 and 1869
