Free Camping in Washington Along The Columbia River (Boondocking)
I went out exploring the dams and sights along the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington and found some of the best free camping in Washington.
The scenery was spectacular along Washington Highway 14 (also known as the Lewis and Clark Highway). I hiked up the trail at Beacon Rock State Park to get a panoramic view of the entire valley and spotted the Bonneville Dam in the distance.
The best part of my visit to the Bonneville Dam was checking out the fish ladders and watching salmon swim through. I also visited Hood River, The Dalles Dam, John Day Dam, and Washington's version of Stonehenge, before scouting out some future boondocking spots near the John Day Dam. Melissa and I will definitely be returning there to do more exploring and camping along the river.

Hike to Tom McCall Point Columbia River Gorge Oregon
This area is named after late governor Tom McCall who was committed to preserving natural place such as this. The hike begins at the Rowena Overlook on the Old Columbia River Highway between Hood River and The Dalles. Hiking from from March thru October this hike provides you with a wonderful variety of landscapes to enjoy. The trail is fairly level at first, but then climbs steeper and steeper as you work your way up Tom McCall Point. Wildflowers begin showing themselves as early as late February, and by March are in full swing. They just keep getting better and better with each month, until they peak out by the end of June. The views as you climb Tom McCall Point are nearly as great as the wildflowers. The area is managed by The Nature Conservancy so there are a few restrictions that are posted at the trailhead.
Crown Point and Vista House - near Portland, Oregon
Crown Point is the name of a promontory on the Columbia River Gorge just east of Portland, Oregon. Crown Point is one of the scenic lookouts along the Historic Columbia River Highway, providing a panoramic view of part of the Columbia River. The Crown Point Vista House was built in 1916 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building was being refurbished when this video was shot in 2004. It was restored to its 1916 appearance and reopened in 2005. With its marble interior and brass fixtures, the $100,000 renovation makes it the most expensive rest area in the world!

Maryhill State park such a beautiful park well worth anytime there. Portland Oregon is experiencing some unusual precipitation or rain from May - June. June is a record month yay :( . Currents in the ocean have brought us warmer ocean water and has directed the jet stream right at Portland with massive rain. As it warms up this will go away, another week and this is history!

TALLEST WATERFALL IN NORTH AMERICA!! (Part 2) XXXVI
Thanks for watching!!
Yosemite National Park
The Yosemite Falls Trail leads to the top of North America’s tallest waterfall, which rises 2,425 feet (739 m) above the Valley floor. This trail starts near Camp 4, along the Valley Loop Trail, and immediately begins its climb, switchback after switchback, through oak woodland. You will begin to climb above some trees and into exposed plateaus that offer you a glimpse of what's to come: great views of Yosemite Valley and its many iconic landforms. Do not stray off of the maintained path, as you will find steep drops adjacent to the trail. A steep climb is well rewarded with close-up views of Upper Yosemite Fall and distant views of Half Dome and other Sierra mountain peaks. Along the hike, enjoy a bird's eye view of Yosemite Valley's meadows and the meandering Merced River.
If you make the one-mile, 1,000 foot climb (via dozens of switchbacks) to Columbia Rock, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and Sentinel Rock. The upper half of the trail is steep and rocky, but the arduous climb is well worth the amazing views you will be rewarded with at the top. Here you may be surprised by the small size of Yosemite Creek, which feeds this massive waterfall. Use extreme caution when near the creek and remember you are directly above a waterfall.
At the top of the Yosemite Falls Trail, you can extend your hike east to Yosemite Point (follow signs for North Dome; adds 1.6 miles roundtrip (2.6 km) to this hike) or west to Eagle Peak (follow signs to El Capitan, adds 5.8 miles roundtrip (9.3 km) to this hike). Yosemite Point offers direct views of Half Dome that rival those found on the North Dome trail, gives you an opportunity to see Lost Arrow Spire up close, and provides panoramic views of many other peaks. Eagle Peak, part of the Three Brothers rock formation, is the highest point on the north rim of Yosemite Valley, which gives you a different perspective of the surrounding granite landscape.

(Maryhill) Stonehenge Replica along the Columbia River in Washington
Erected as the nation’s first WWI memorial and dedicated in 1918 to the servicemen of Klickitat County, Washington, who died in the service of their country during the Great War, Hill’s Stonehenge Memorial is a monument to heroism and peace.
Hill erroneously believed that the original Stonehenge was constructed as a place of human sacrifice. Concluding there was a parallel between the loss of life in WWI and the sacrifices at ancient Stonehenge, he set out to build a replica on the cliffs of the Columbia as a reminder of those sacrifices and the “incredible folly” of the war.
Guided by leading authorities on archaeology, astronomy, and engineering, Hill combined their knowledge to duplicate, as nearly as possible, the original size and design of the ancient Neolithic ruin in England.
The original idea was to use local stone, however, when the rock proved unsatisfactory, Hill decided to use reinforced concrete. (The rough, hand-hewn looking texture was created by lining the wooden forms with crumpled tin.)
On June 8, 1918 a total eclipse of the sun was predicted, with the best viewing point in the vicinity of Goldendale, Washington. Consequently, some of the best astronomers of the day were in Klickitat County. Professor Campbell, of Lick Observatory at the University of California, agreed to fix the position of the altar stone. Unlike the ancient Stonehenge, it is aligned to the astronomical horizon rather than the actual midsummer sunrise. This results in a three degree difference from the original structure. Combined with a five degree difference in latitude and the manner in which the surrounding hills obscure the actual horizon, Stonehenge Memorial is difficult to use as an astronomical calendar.
On July 4, 1918 the altar stone was dedicated with a plaque that reads:To the memory of the soldiers and sailors of Klickitat County who gave their lives in defense of their country. This monument is erected in hope that others inspired by the example of their valor and their heroism may share in that love of liberty and burn with that fire of patriotism which death alone can quench.
Stonehenge Memorial was completed in 1929 and re-dedicated on Memorial Day of that year, when 14 local service men were honored by having their names placed on the pillars of the Memorial.
When Samuel Hill died in 1931, his body was cremated and the ashes placed in a crypt just below the Stonehenge Memorial. The original crypt deteriorated in the next 25 years and was replaced in 1955 by a granite monument bearing his epitaph: “Samuel Hill: Amid nature’s great unrest, he sought rest.”
Otter Point State Park, S. Oregon Coast Sept. 2015
Nice little State Park on the S. OR Coast near Gold Beach. I was checking out some boondocking spots nearby and found this poorly signed narrow side road. Awesome view point after a short walk out to the point. Scary dangerous with 150 ft. cliffs, so pay close attention if you have kids.
McCall Nature Preserve Rowena Crest - Eastern Gorge, Oregon
This was a wonderful sunny day hike to view the wildflowers. They were in full bloom . Beautiful views, quiet, lots of flowers, the fragrance of those flowers may have you drunk while you walk along :) . A really good workout and gorgeous panorama view of the Columbia River Gorge, Mt Hood, and Mt Adams. We have no problem with ticks, rattlesnake or poison oak as reported

Pistol River View Point, Oregon - July 03, 2013
Pistol River State Park is set in the dunes of the southern Oregon coast. The river supposedly got its name when a militia soldier lost his pistol in the river during the infamous Rogue River Indian War. In March of 1856, a decisive battle was fought here
Vista Ridge Hike
Vista Ridge to Elk Cove, Cairn Basin and Dollar Lake. 2000'+ elevation gain and more than 12 miles of hiking. The 2-hour drive from Portland to the Vista Ridge trailhead was totally worth it. This hike went through a forest fire area from 2012 (that still sometimes smells of burning wood), blooming meadows, snow fields, streams and river crossings. With the hot temperatures all through July and intense snow melt, crossing Ladd's Creek was really tricky. Unfortunately, my GoPro batteries died while trying to film everyone jumping across, so I only have one poorly shot slow motion video of the crossing. Filmed on 7/19/14. Alpine views included Mount Adams, Rainier and St. Helens. If I knew what Lost Lake looked like, I would probably say we saw that too. Music by Oregon musicians The Dimes.

Murietta Falls is a seasonal waterfalls which only appears during winter season after the rain.
Due to recent winter storm in May - which was Very unusual for California weather - I had to cancel my Backpacking trip and headed to Ohlone Regional Park.
Did not expect much of it but two days of rain created beautiful creeks and waterfalls.
Beacon Rock Hiking Trail
My mom and I decided to enjoy the free Day at Beacon Rock State Park in WA. It was a gorgeous drive. We stopped along HWY 14 to take pictures at the Cape Horn view point and Franz Lake National Wildlife viewpoint.
***The photos of the Beacon Rock trail start at :55. The hike itself was easy and quick. We did find a trail across the street that I hope to hike soon. It is the Rodney Falls and Hamilton Mountain trail.

OAK BOTTOM
We're at the Oak Bottom campground near Redding, waiting for the call that our motorhome is ready to be picked up. Staying just far enough South that it's warm enough to camp in this non-winter-friendly RV. We have some chicken soup, the kids play Monopoly in the parking lot, and Parker's ready for some pedals on his bike.
