Ep. 119: Big Bend National Park | Texas RV travel camping
In this episode of Grand Adventure we're deep in the Chihuahuan Desert, the second largest desert in North America. We're right on the Mexican border, on the banks of the Rio Grande River in the Big Bend area of beautiful West Texas. This is part 1 of our two-part series from the Big Bend.
We're visiting Big Bend National Park. This National Park is massive, encompassing 801,000 acres, the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States. It includes approximately 118 miles of America's national boundary with Mexico along the Rio Grande, designated a wild and scenic river. We'll see Boquillas Canyon, the Boquillas Port of Entry river crossing to Mexico, the Hot Springs Historic Area, Panther Junction, the Chisos Mountains and Chisos Basin, and the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. We'll show you the National Park's Rio Grande Village Campground, Chisos Basin Campground and Cottonwood Campground, as well as Maverick Ranch RV Park at Lajitas Golf Resort in the tiny riverside hamlet of Lajitas, where we're staying ourselves.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a YouTube channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, nearly always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and our dogs Zoe and Maggie are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on YouTube, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're weekend warriors just like you!
We'll provide tips and insight on equipping and maintaining your RV, trip planning and travel videos to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

SuperTurbo Toyota 4runner explores Big Bend National Park Backcountry trails.
Entering Big Bend, we immediately got on the first off-road trail, Old Ore Road. Traveling down that 26 mile road, we stopped half way to Willow Tank for some backcountry camping, we then headed off to the end of the trail early that next morning, taking us to the main road, a 20 mile drive, leading us to Panther Junction Visitor Center to get a backcountry pass to Talley 4. We then refueled at a little gas station passed Panther Junction and also filled 11 gallons extra of gas to prepare us for our journey to Black Gap. We back tracked about 10 miles towards Old Ore Road to enter the Glenn Spring Road trail to the right that was 4.5 miles long to Black Gap, our main destination. Black Gap Road was definitely the hardest part of all the trails, but any stock truck with 4x4 can make it with careful driving. Exiting Black Gap Road, a 8.5 mile trail, into River Road West, we then set off to camp at Talley 4, a 6 mile trail, to the view of the Rio Grande. The next day we head back to the River Road West, a 27.5 mile road to Castolon Visitor Center leaving us with a quarter tank of gas. And also with no other gas stations available on this side of Big Bend, if we stayed any more nights with more off-roading the 11 gallons of gas would have been definitely needed. Leaving Castolon Visitor Center we drove 8 miles to Old Maverick Road, a light dirt road (4x4 not required) but very bumpy and worn. Turning left on Maverick Junction to pavement, our trip ended up in a small ghost town of Terlingua, TX. A whole of 350 miles round trip in Big Bend, averaging around 13mpg and using around 3 gallons of water methanol injection. 13 mpg is good considering all the off-roading, idleing, towing and stops. Big Bend backcountry is not too bad but very bump. Highly recommend airing down for a smoother ride. As long as you have high clearance, a spare tire, and water, you'll be set! For deep exploring, I recommend extra gas.
Big Bend National Park Day 1
Arrived and got set up at Big Bend National Park. Decided that we would go to Terlingua ( as seen on the show Badlands of Texas )for the rest of the day and see the sites. No video of the La Kiva Bar but drinks were very good.

SUMMARY
=======
For the Texas State Park see Big Bend Ranch State Park.
Big Bend National Park is an American national park located in West Texas, bordering Mexico. The park has national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States. The park protects more than 1,200 species of plants, more than 450 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 75 species of mammals.Geological features in the park include sea fossils and dinosaur bones, as well as volcanic dikes. The area has a rich cultural history, from archeological sites dating back nearly 10,000 years to more recent pioneers, ranchers, and miners.The park encompasses an area of 801,163 acres (1,251.8 sq mi; 3,242.2 km2). For more than 1,000 miles (1,600 km), the Rio Grande/Río Bravo forms the boundary between Mexico and the United States, and Big Bend National Park administers approximately 118 miles (190 km) along that boundary. The park was named after a large bend in the river, and the Texas—Mexico border.Because the Rio Grande serves as an international boundary, the park faces unusual constraints while administering and enforcing park rules, regulations, and policies. In accordance with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the park's territory extends only to the center of the deepest river channel as the river flowed in 1848. The rest of the land south of that channel, and the river, lies within Mexican territory. The park is bordered by the protected areas of Parque Nacional Cañon de Santa Elena and Maderas del Carmen in Mexico.
Life on the Mississippi By Mark Twain [Part 3/5] VideoBook
Life on the Mississippi is a memoir by Mark Twain detailing his days as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River before the American Civil War. A good portion of the work also deals with his post-war visit to the old haunts.
